  Excessive Meat/Protein Cravings
« on: January 10, 2009, 07:32:21 PM » by SarahLaRae
I have a couple of questions.

Can you eat too much meat? My husband has recently started craving meat alllll of the time.  I know that means he's needing more protein in his diet, but is just eating meat for protein a good idea?  Is there some sort of supplement he should be taking?  Meat is awful costly.  Grin

I did a search and came up with nothing, so I'm sorry HB if this is already somewhere else!  Roll Eyes

I am not sure about eating too much meat, but perhaps it isn't a protein thing at all.  Is it just red meat he is craving?  Perhaps, he is getting a well needed B vitamin that he needs from meat?

Could he possibly be anemic?  How about his blood sugar levels?  Does he have hunger throughout the day?  Stress that could be depleting B vitamins?

Good questions already...

Does he have any signs of adrenal fatigue?
Any recent change in his activity levels?

IMO we can eat to much meat just like we can eat and drink to much of anything. Even drinking to much water can be unhealthy.

I also get to craving meat at times even tho it does not do well with my digestive system. I sometimes wonder if it is just a need for healthy fats and proteins  or something because there has been many times when I crave meat that eating healthy proteins like nuts/seeds/eggs helps and eating nice creamy smooth avocados really helps.

So it could be a protein and fat issue? I dunno.[/color]

lets see, to answer some questions.....
He craves all  meat, not just red.
He has been under stress here lately because of school. (he's a college student at the moment)

As for adrenal fatigue, the only 4 symptoms he has that matches is:
Lack of energy during the afternoon (but only sometimes)
He had a coffee addiction until about 3 weeks ago when he got a stomach virus.
Sometimes lightheaded
Craves food high in protein.

Thanks ladies!

I would be concerned about too much iron if he consumes a great deal of red meat.  Maybe switching protien sources around would alleviate that.  I also crave meat and protiens at times (especially when I'm pregnant...but that wouldn't apply to him  Wink .) I think my high protien times are right after I've splurged and eaten too much sugar...so I would also guess that it's a nutritional (vitamin/mineral) defficiency that the body is trying to compensate for.

Does he drink Kombucha?  That would be a great source of B vitamins, offer an afternoon pick-me up, and give him a good replacement for his coffee.

I'd guess that the stress is taxing his system, and make sure he's getting a supplement, and maybe even some Spirulina while he's under pressure with school.

I'd be thinking blood sugar is low, sarah.  Maybe try having a protein-laden snack every 3 hours or so to maintain more constant blood sugar levels and see if that helps.  Coffee can create an artificial balance of sorts so the lack of coffee might be throwing him out of whack.

My guy carries crackers with peanut butter or cheese, almonds or peanuts, sometimes beef jerky, yoghurt, or something like that with him for mid-morning or mid-afternoon snacks.

Maybe he needs more fats.  Most foods high in protein are also high in fat and if he's eating lean meats, his body will continue to crave because the need for the fats isn't being met.  Maybe?  Maybe you could give him some cod liver oil, or try slathering his meats in butter or gravy made with meat fat drippins.
