  E. Coli bacteria... any natural method to beat it??
« on: September 16, 2006, 12:21:54 AM » by MumCLS
Hello all:
I am sure you have all heard by now about the e.coli bacteria in the raw bagged spinach.  Well, we have eaten it all week (of course before this hit the news).  I am pregnant and due in just a week and a half.  the entire family has been eating the spinach this past week.  Since finding out about the e.coli outbreak, we have been eating raw garlic as well as a good probiotic.  Is there anything else we can do (we are praying too!!)?  I am hoping that our bagged raw spinach was ok... but until we get out of the incubation period which is 3-9 days... well, we want to do all we can to protect ourselves.  Any ideas (including herbal/probiotics/ect.?)  Thank you in advance for any information!
God Bless,
Cindy

Cindy,

I am wondering the same thing! I love spinach and have a bag in my refrigerator right now, but I'm a little scared to eat it. Our family loves to add spinach to our salads. There is surely something that we can use to wash it or soak it in, right?

Okay ladies (and gents)....

You're going to have to take my word at this one because I don't have a reference for it. I have this piece of paper (copy) in my recipe drawer that I have pulled out. Got it from my dad who researches these things thoroughly.
Anyway, it says that the FDA recommends that you cook sprouts (and other raw stuff) before you eat them--ridiculous! You'd be shooting yourself in the foot, so to speak!

It goes on to say that a fantastic way to kill e-coli on your raw veggies is to spray with a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and white vinegar. Then rinse. "This mixture virtually eliminates any possibility of contamination. Your (sprouts) will taste great and you'll have the peace of mind knowing they're safe."

It goes on to say that 'you can use this on all your fruits and vegetables, cutting boards, countertops and utensils. Studies show it's even more effective at killing germs than bleach!'

I have not personally used this method, but am thinking of mixing up a batch. My question is...how do you know for sure that it works? Anybody else ever come across something like this?

There is a book that talks about this subject.  It is called Miracle Sugars by Rita Elkins M.H.  I believe it is available on Amazon.com.  There is a product called Ambrotose that is said to help as well.  (I haven't yet tried it.)   Smiley

Ciinnamon! If you have already eaten something infested with e coli use lots of fresh ground cinnamon in your diet ,itwill help to clear it out of your digestive tract .Do not use it in tinture or essentiall oil form though if you are pregnant as using it like this can cause unwanted uterine contractions. But lots of cinnamon in your cooking and food will help.

Mama Sita's recommendation is excellent. Hydrogen Peroxide and vinegar is a great rinse. Also, vinegar and olive oil on salads is a great way to avoid a lot of stomach bugs, e-coli included.

Thank you, Mama Sita! I think I will try the Hydrogen peroxide and vinegar mix. Is there a specific ratio? Is it half vinegar and half peroxide or what?

Well, I have a couple suggestions in case you miss the e coli bug.  First thing is the garlic, good start, then take some Vit C and echinacea tea.  Third, I would do a cleanse such as an enema to rid the intestines of the little buggers quicker.  Thanks for the news update!  I don't have T.V. and we have been eating these bagged things, so I may be hovering my toilet soon. Would soaking it in a rock salt water bath work as well?  I've read that this is what you should do with all fruits and vegees.

I heard on the news that they believe that this bacteria may have actually been absorbed into the plants themselves by the roots, thus no amount of washing would remove it.  This isn't something to play around with - all bagged spinach should be thrown out just in case.  It's such a strong strain of e coli that most people who have gotten it have ended up in the hospital!  They even recommended that frozen spinach dated *after* August 1 be thrown out!  Kinda scary stuff!  Hope none of you have been affected by it!

It didn't really give a ratio or anything, but I would use half and half.

I have an old reference book that suggests this method of washing foods before preparation. The method was developed by Dr. Hazel Parcells. In the 1930s (in her 40s) she cured herself of 'terminal' tuberculosis and is still around today at a beautiful 106. Much of her recommendations are on natural chelating methods, cleansing your body and your food of parasites and/or toxins. (Although in these later years, she has become associated with some "out there" teachings on aura's & such.)

She recommends that you use organic foods as much as possible. However, if that is not possible (and in today's climate, I would say even if it is organic), she recommends a food bath made up of the following: 1 tsp Clorox to 1 gallon purified, ozonated, and/or electrolyte-enhanced water. Except for ground meats, the food should be placed in the bath for the designated time, removed, placed into clear water for ten minutes and rinse. After this the foods can be cooked or stored.

This bath has been around for decades and used by missionaries and military families overseas. You have to be sure to use Clorox (not some off brand) because its active ingredient is sodium hypochlorite which breaks down into salt and water. You can use it with produce, poultry, fish, meat and eggs. Pesticides, parasites, bacteria (such as salmonella) and other contaminants can be removed with this simple soak. Dr Parcells determined that the Clorox enables the food to take in oxygen and become fresh once again. You will notice that your produce actually lasts longer in the refrigerator.

Here is the chart:
Food Group                                           Bathing Time
Leafy vegetables                                   15 minutes
Root, thick-skinned, or fibrous veggies     30 minutes
Thin-skinned fruits, such as berries,
plums, peaches, and apricots             30 minutes

Thick-skinned fruits, such as citrus,
     bananas, and apples                         30 minutes
Poultry, fish, meat, and eggs                   20 minutes

There is a substitute bath of apple cider vinegar or 3/4 cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide in place of the Clorox, but Dr. Parcells' research shows that the detoxifying results will not be the same.

Of course, this only addresses surface contaminants, not the synthetic plant foods and/or hormones that may have been fed the plant or animal.

My husband, who is a Mr. Steady, and definately not paranoid about health (but like to be and do healthy thing) just called me from work.  He had been listening to the radio and asked me to throw away our bagged spinach!  I had been eating it everyday, bu I got out of the habit, and hadn't had any all last week.  Maybe God's way of protecting me.

I don't think anyone has mentioned this yet, but it helps to have your digestive tract lined with healthy bacteria. They filter out the dangerous pathogens like e coli. Places where you could get healthy bacteria would include:  probiotic supplements, kefir, yogurt, kombucha, miso, and lacto-fermented fruits and vegetables. Also, going easy on the refined and even natural sugars will help these probiotics to really work well.

I just came across the recommendation to use vinegar and peroxide to disinfect fruits and vegetables.  I think the method needs to be clarified:

http://www.newmediaexplorer.org/chris/2006/04/05/super_disinfectant_spray_using_peroxide_vinegar.htm

Spray one, wait a little bit, spray the other, wait a little bit, then rinse.  DO NOT mix the vinegar and peroxide into solution.  Use each separately.

I read about this in Second Opinion Newsletter and Dr. Rowen mentioned that he prefers the vinegar/peroxide sprays to the diluted Clorox soak.  More effective, no aftertaste.

If you buy the small spray bottles you can usually just screw the spray top onto the vinegar or peroxide bottle.
