Has anyone used Wild Yam for spacing children/not conceiving?  I knew about its muscle relaxing properties, and just read about the progesterone type effects, but just found that some folks drink it in a tea for child spacing.

I know two people (mother and daughter) that used progesterone cream (wild yam cream) from Natures Sunshine to prevent pregnancy.  They used it directly over their ovaries every day.  The wild yam supresses ovulation so they didn't get pregnant.  They both planned their families using this method.  Actually, daughter isn't done yet.   Wink

One advantage to this method is if one does ovulate and gets pregnant then you wouldn't lose the baby by an abortificant method.  Baby would implant with no trouble.  I have at least one friend who used the progest. cream all through her pregnancy (regulated by her natural doc because dosage changed throughout pregnancy).  But it was the ONLY pregnancy (#5) that she didn't deliver early and have to be on bed rest the whole time.  She was not happy to discover that the first 4 times she could have avoided all that if her OB-GYN had known anything.   Undecided

I think Rebekah hit on an important point with the PNG gals.  It's very possible the high progesterone content in their bodies prevented labor from coming on.  Logically, it makes sense.  Ummm, are woman logical?   Tongue  Not me!

I think that you have to be very careful using hormones (natural or synthetic) without using some method to test how high or low they are in your body.  Each women's body is so different that it would be difficult to know just how much a person should use.

Rebekah, if Beeyoutiful starts to do a pregesterone cream will you have a dosage controller of some sort?  Just thought I'd throw that thought out their since it's not made yet.  Might be something to consider....

Blessings,

Patti

Clementine, the recipe you posted for what you hope to do next time you make your P cream is an emulsion- it contains both oil and water. That is fine- it will be more like a lotion, but you have added no preservative, so this cream would HAVE to be kept in the refridgerator to retard spoilage. I would also recomend making very small batches. If you want a salve that does not need preservation/refridgeration, omit water/borax from the mixture, and use only oils and beeswax. I have not tried P cream yet, but have made emulsions and salves. HTH.

THANK YOU for asking that question!

I was wondering it myself. I'm one of those people that never could figure out what part of the baby was poking out when he was turning and moving. I know moms that can tell where the head and/or bottom is by just feeling. I just look like  Huh. I've saved every ultrasound photo, watched every scan carefully -- and they still look like just really bad black and white abstracts -- even when the technician circles parts for me to see. I just nod in mute confusion so as not to frustrate them.

The funny thing is that I can feel the muscle twinge when I ovulate, so I am very aware of my body. . . . In some ways though, I'm just clueless.

Okay, I did a search. The first picture is what I have (in addition to my crock pot).
The second picture is what I don't have.

My question is how do I convert recipes (such as the one for wild yam above) that use picture B (which I don't have) to the equipment I DO have (like picture A or the crock pot)? Huh Huh

I'm just asking in case some of you more experienced recipe tinkerers (I know you're out there) know.
Okay I think I did that wrong the first time. I'll try again. Do you have a canning book? If you do look up a recipe and check the time difference between the pressure canner and water bath method. My guess is water bath should be about 90 min. if pressure is 30 maybe longer though. Betty crocker has a small section on canning . Otherwise you could check out a book on canning at the library. It's alway about 3 times as long with water bath. Just remember to make sure the water covers the jar and is boiling all the time.
Does anyone know how much of the cream to use? Maybe we could look on a jar of progesterone cream to get some kind of idea?
I can hardly wait to see beeyoutiful girls research. That other thread by SC was just what I had been looking for. This website has been so helpful for me and my family. Thank you all so much for sharing your knowledge!

The websites that offer the cream say to use 1/4 teaspoon per day.  And to put it on soft skin (belly, thigh, inside arm) but to rotate where you put it.

Your ovaries are right above your panty line on either leg, almost level with your pubic hairline.  This is pretty close anyway.  I think if you put the cream right in the fold of the leg close to the pubic hair, you'd do just fine.

Hi Beka,
I am really interrested in your research findings.  I am going to do my own research as well.  I don't think hubby would appreciate me drinking a beer to try an experiment, but your findings were fascinating.  I was actually thinking of a way to make wild yam cream for myself and then got on the web and found this thread.  One question I have is this: Did the women in PNG nurse exclusively for two years or were they feeding solid foods as well while they nursed?  I get my period back 10 - 12 weeks after having a baby.  I nurse round the clock, drink lots and even took blessed thistle with the last one.  Didn't help at all.  I had plenty of milk supply, but I had 4 children in 5 years. A little hard on my body. My midwife recommended wild yam cream, but I didn't take much of it because I heard that it may not be that good for me. I'm wondering then if a hormonal imbalance is why I get my period back so soon after birth.

By the way, I was at the health food store today and found out that one of the ladies that works there is a NGJ reader.  She told me how much she enjoyed all the herb things that she is reading for the younger generation to get involved in.  Small world!
Thanks for it all.

I'm going to try this today.  I have some questions for Beka and anyone who's done the crock pot thing.

Do you soak the roots for a few minutes and then drain or do you lay them out on a cookie sheet and sprinkle them or what?

Will the cheap coconut oil from Walmart work ok?  I have lard, but I'm afraid that it will cause a hormone imbalance in the cream.

Do I fill the jar to the top with my oil? or just cover the root?

Do I seal the jar?  Loose or tight?

Do we have a consensus on the 3-day crock pot method?  I don't have a pressure canner, nor do I have access to one.  I wouldn't know how to use it, even if I did.

Do I have to continue to add water every day?

Should it be all the way up the sides of the jar?

Do I keep my crock on high or low?

Do I need to refrigerate?  If so, would adding Vitamin E help preserve it outside the fridge?  How much Vit E should I add?  How long will it keep?

Keep in mind, I've never made a tincture this way.  I don't remember seeing a recipe anywhere for it.  Help me out ladies, please.   Grin

You know, I've never made Wild Yam cream - in any form! I bought mine from NOW foods, and it works good but smells a little stinky, IMO.  I remember Mom doing the pressure cooker method, and I posted her recipe, but that's as far as my experience goes.

Hopefully one of the other ladies that has actually tried this will answer!

Sorry to be of no help on this one!

Now I am really interested... I've heard about my grandma and others doing their housework and oh... here comes the baby and the labor is about 15 minutes and 2 pushes....
Is the estrogen dominance of our day part of the cause for the scarcity of normal, relatively easy deliveries? Who knows maybe I can do what my grandma did too...Wooo, want to try it that way Wink

I started my homemade cream a couple of weeks ago and it appears (so far, so good) that my bleeding has stopped after 5 days this cycle.  We'll see.  I'm assuming, this means that my fibroid cyst is healing.  I'll have to call my doc and see what he says.  He told me that wild yam cream wouldn't be strong enough to have any effect.    Roll Eyes

I talked to my doc today.  I really do like my doc, but sometimes, I think he just doesn't have a clue.   Roll Eyes  I just thought I would share what he had to say - (he's NOT a naturopath or an allopath).

They told me after my pap that my hormones were "normal".  Since I have a fibroid, I wanted to know what "normal" meant.  He said they didn't even test my hormone levels for balance, only for the phase of my life (pre-menapause or whatever).  He also said that having a fibroid and/or extra bleeding at 36 was normal.   Shocked  He also said that taking wild yam and eliminating hormone injected meats and soy products wouldn't make any difference.  Only hormone therapy would do me any good.

I don't believe a word of this, nor do I expect you to, but I thought I'd just let you know that doctors (even the good ones) don't know everything.

Wow! There is too much info here for me to swallow at one time! My main concern is this, however: What about those of us who DO NOT WANT to have a longer space between our children like 2-4 years? I have symptoms of Estrogen Dominance and I was loving the idea of using the yam cream, but I thought adding Progesterone *helped* with conception rather than diminish it? I don't want to use something, even "natural" that will mess with my ovulation (and make me muscular and manly). Wink Obviously, it sounds like the people from PNG had too much Prog. where many of us here have too much Estrogen, so how can prog. help you conceive and help infertility and yet cause it to be harder to conceive all at the same time? What if you are wanting to help dissolve breast fibroids? Is it safe to put on your breasts? If you put it everywhere put your ovaries, will it then not mess with your ovulation pattern? Shocked Very interested to hear an answer to this one!

I made the wild yam cream using the crock pot method. I used coconut oil and after processing added olive oil to the mix. After straining and adding the olive oil, I have a quart jar that I keep in the fridge.

It has been a great energy boost to me. I apply over the ovaries every a.m. and the effects are very warming and noticeable. I use a pea size portion. I apply daily and do not count days as I am not convinced that is the way to go for me.

Anyway, it is great to have the sense of wellbeing and energy that this brings. I've also noticed fewer aches and pains.

I have a quick question.  Can you use the wild yam tincture
from Now or some other source to make your cream.  Is the
tincture the same as the cream in potency and would it work as
well?  What would the ratio be for oil to tincture?  Anyone done this?
Thank you!

Would somebody please check my symptoms below and tell me if it sounds like fibriods?  I was hoping someone (Healthybratt, you there? Smiley) Might want to post exactly how they made thier homemade wild yam creme, and how often they use it.  I could use some decreasing of symptoms and a sense of well being...

I have bloody mucous spotting after intercourse (possibly not if I don't orgasm- going to experiment a little more with that theory) and I've been passing "things" the last two cycles.  My lower belly gets huge and swollen, sometimes crampy (like menstrual cramps), I feel like I can't "go" (bm),  sometimes a combination of evening primrose and rasperry leaf tea helps, and I think I had an early miscarriage the cycle before last, but it seems I've passed too much tissue for just the miscarriage, as early as it would have been if that's what it was.  I think I am not just low on progesterone, but also estrogen dominant.  Also major hypoglycemia/ adrenal insufficiancy issues (all my glands are out of whack) when hormones are fluctuating.  Does this sound like fibriods to you ladies who have experience?  Can yo think of anything else I might consider if not?  I super duper really appreciate any help I can get!!!!!

I believe so... I have a tincture "brewing" now also.  I believe I found a recipe by Dr Schultze (?), and altered it a bit, but it consisted of wild yam, damiana, angelica, chaste tree berries, and 2 other things that I have written down, but can't remember off the top of my head...
I am planning on trying it for menopausal symptoms and hormone regulation in general.

I was going to make some and add saw palmetto so that hubby and I could both use it to reverse estrogen dominance.  Saw palmetto is included in most of the men's wild yam formulas as it supports the prostate and male drive, but I've also read that it's good for women too.  If you want more ideas, google, progesteron or wild yam cream online.  Many of the women's formulas contain chamomile, but I'm not sure why.
