Homemade Wild Yam Cream: Recipes, Tips & Tricks
« on: September 16, 2006, 09:41:13 PM » by Clementine
I am interested in making my own cream from Wild Yam Root.  Does anyone have a recipe to share for this?  I have made my own creams and moisterizers before, but am not sure the best way to prepare the Wild Yam.   Smiley

Interesting!

Where did you get the wild yam root?

I would be interested in knowing about anyone else's experience with wild yam: pregnant, nursing, not, menapause, etc...

Beeyoutiful may develop a progesterone cream in the future, and we've been researching wild yam, but there are some conflicting stories out there - any experience here?

This is my mom's (Debi Pearl) wild yam recipe, which is supposed to be super powerful. Be careful:

WILD YAM CREAM

Soak root in just enough water for the roots to soak up all the water with none standing.

Put in quart jars until jar is half full of root. Cover with oil, lard, or whatever fat medium you prefer.

Pressure cook on 10 pounds for 30 minutes. Cool, strain off the fat, which now has the wild yam properties.

Use the fat to make cream with any salve/cream recipe.

Thanks for the reply.  :)I got the Wild Yam from the Bulk Herb Store, but wasn't sure about how to process it.  I will try the instructions you gave.  I would really enjoy reading other's experience with Wild Yam also.  I'll also keep an eye out for the cream that Beeyoutiful will hopefully be making. Like you said, I have read conflicting things about it.  Some say it works, some say not.  We'll see. . . .  Grin

So I'm reading about exactly HOW potent this stuff could be.  How much of this recipe/how often is safe?  I'm thinking of brewing a batch for my mom who is beginning serious menopause symptoms and doesn't want to do HRT, but I don't want her to overdo it.

Has anyone used Wild Yam for spacing children/not conceiving?  I knew about its muscle relaxing properties, and just read about the progesterone type effects, but just found that some folks drink it in a tea for child spacing.

I'm doing some indepth research on progesterone and estrogen, natural sources in foods and herbs, and side effects. It's one of the most amazing research subjects I've ever come across and hopefully within the week I'll have a readable summary of my findings.

About wild yam, when I lived in Papua New Guinea as a missionary, the mountain people ate wild yam as a main staple. Their children were naturally spaced 2-4 years apart. There was also a high occurance of fraternal twins. The women didn't ovulate as long or as often, and were very muscular, with thick skin, and an almost manly build. After the reading I've done this week, I have to believe they were high in progesterone. They were also prone to fits of anger though  Angry .

I've also concluded that almost ALL Americans are Estrogen dominant, due to our diets and lack of exercise. BUT - like the omega oils, both Estrogen and Progesterone are needed to ensure hormonal balance. Herbs in which both E and P binding componants exist usually have an interesting ratio of more P than E, but BOTH are present. They work together.

Some of the common symptoms of Estrogen dominance are:

Migraine headaches
Chronic Yeast
Unexplained weight gain, or inability to loose weight.
Pregnancy problems, miscarriages, premature births.

And many more. I'll post more on this soon. In the meantime, sunshine and exercise can help with Estrogen dominance. Also, the spike of estrogen after eating soy products is incredible. The research I've found shows an immediate extreme increase in E levels which tapers off for 24 hours after drinking a few ounces of soy milk. We get soy in everything these days.
I was interested in this subject because SC had mentioned that Estrogen dominance may cause ligament problems during child bearing. I have major ligament problems! Since using the Wild Yam cream, my ligaments have improved drastically. I can walk without a limp, and get up and down without aid. The pain reduction is significant.

Beer of course, is high in estrogen too.

I'm not a "beer drinker" - but for my research I did an experiment this week: I tried drinking a German beer - a known high source of Estrogen - and within an hour I had a migraine headache which lasted about 8 hours and was accompanied with nausea, lethargy, etc... A few days later I tried it again (another beer), and used Wild Yam progesterone cream at the same time.... no headache, no yucky feeling. I felt energized and "happy". Interesting. The prosence of both P and E kept me balanced.

Okay, I'm letting the cat out of the bag before I'm ready...

I am particularly interested in how it may (?) be safely used for birth control. I have somehow accidentely become the local resident BC counselor around here (no, don't ask me, if you are reading this, you have internet!  Cheesy Cool Grin) and I have 2 friends waiting for futher research on P cream right now, and I don't have time... perhaps I can mooch off Rebekah's research... Does this mean that their cycle wasn't every month, like the "normal" American.  Did they only have periods when they ovulated?  Every how often?

I am very interested in this as a natural birth control!  (and I sure wouldn't mind missing a few periods!)

Just wanted to express my interest also in this research by Rebekah. My interest is in the effects of the estrogen/progesterone imbalance. SC's post on that other thread got me wondering if this can be involved in auto-immune and/or thyroid issues. Specifically because I have (primary) Raynaud's. I have read that estrogen can play a role in Raynaud's, but haven't been able to find anything out about it that's in "layman's terms".

Is it just me, or does it seem to you also that we're all in some kind of downward health spiral with more and more people getting sicker and sicker as time goes on???

I didn't want to use my big pressure cooker for only one jar.  I used the basic tincture method, putting the yam in the jar with oil as Rebekah recommended.  Then I put it in the crock pot with water around it as if I was making a basic tincture.  It seemed to work well, but this is something I am still experimenting with.  I never thought of doing it in the crock pot until she suggested the pressure cooker.  I can't wait to read the results of her research.   Smiley

SC's research is awesome, and cuts mine in half  Smiley... I still don't have a computer anyway, so it will be another week before I can get my research compiled. I'm borrowing one for an hour...

The PNG women that I lknew ived lin the mountains at about 7,000 feet altitude. Their main diet was yams and the greens of yams. The ones I knew menstruated less frequently, and not consistently. Some had cycles that were 35- 45 days apart. Those that gave birth would not ovulate until after they stopped nursing, which was usually two years. My friends often referred to their menstruation as "the day" - as though it only lasted 24 hours. They would leave the village and stay in designated areas for this time of uncleanness (those birthing also followed this tradition) and were not gone long - 2,3 days tops. My period is 7 days long - which astonished them.

I also had a tribal friend who carried her baby at least 48 weeks. She was sure that it had been a full year. I monitored her frequently, checking her temperature, etc... The baby was moving, and the woman continued to work and walk around. The last week she began to look jaundiced, and ran a low grade fever. I encouraged her to try to have the baby. The next day her son came to get me and told me the baby was born. The baby was "deflated" looking,  wrinkled, and the skin had begun to peel off in thick layers. It was obvious that she had lost weight, and had been in some distress. The mother said that she did not go into labor, but had decided to push the baby out anyway. And she did. She squatted and pushed the baby out with no trouble.  Both the mother and the baby were fine. They asked me to name her (I named her Gloria) and within weeks she was perfectly healthy looking.

Looking back, I wonder if progesterone levels kept this woman from going into labor - or feeling it. She was fully dilated and effaced, and the baby was ready - she was leaking water for a month at least. But no labor.

Using Wild Yam as a natural ovulation control would probably work differently for every woman, and would have to be done with careful attention to how your body is reacting. Playing with the hormones is a tricky thing. Not that we don't do this to the extreme already by eating WAY too much estrogen from poor sources. Birth control pills play with the hormones. Eating a chicken plays with the hormones. Everything must be done with temperance and wisdom.

As SC has stated in the Hormone thread, changing our diets is of most importance, adding sunshine and exercise is next, I believe. And then, adding natural, quality food/herb sources of progesterone AND estrogen.

And finally, no, I don't think we're all getting sicker and sicker. I think the human body was created to withstand enormous abuse - starvation, malnutrition, torture, and synthetic hormones.  But it wasn't designed to last forever - just long enough to give most of us a chance to discover that life doesn't begin or end in the flesh. I'm learning how to have a higher quality of life, but when the time comes, "I love the life that I live, but it's no obsession."   - Joy Williams

More later...

How do you keep if from floating?  How long do you cook it this way?  High or Low setting?  I've never made a tincture in the crock pot so any info you provide will be most helpful.  Thanks.

When I did my tinctures, I did them on low for 3 days.  That was good enough, I guess, since they work.  As for floating, keep the water level just below the top of the contents of your jar, and it won't float.  Be sure to put a dish rag or something under the jar, so it doesn't get too hot.

Please keep up the good research!  I am very interested in this as well as I believe I have high estrogen levels.  I will need to do more research on my own too.
Is it true that when nursing our estrogen levels are very low, especially when the baby is first born?  I always begin to menstruate about a year after my baby is born, when they start to nurse less.  My acne gets worse again and then I have a period.
I am excited to learn more about decreasing my estrogen levels.  I seem to be highly fertile and I wasn't sure if that was because of excess progesterone or estrogen.
This site continues to be such a blessing!

LOl, it really wasn't any trouble.  I have an old smaller crockpot that I use just for my tinctures.  It holds one quart size jar perfectly.  My husband bought me a larger one for cooking a while ago.  You just check the water level each day, and I stirred mine every day as well.  Be careful though, the oil gets hot! And yep, be sure to do the towel under it also as mexmarr mentioned.  Smiley

I combined the oil with beeswax and made a salve.  It got a little more solid that I would like.  I'll use less wax next time.  mexmarr, I'm curious, do you make yours into a salve/cream, or use the tincture in some way?

How in the world do you get a quart-sized jar into a crockpot? Isn't the jar too tall? Wouldn't the contents of the jar slowly seep out if you put it on its side? That's what I would be afraid of. Does the jar actually seal? Maybe this goes under the "stupid question" heading.

I've seen it mentioned in this thread that the jars could be processed in a crock pot bath (just as when making tinctures). So, as a general rule, would a 3 day processing in a crock pot bath be the same as processing in a pressure canner? I'm asking because I'd like to try this recipe without investing in another kitchen gadget unless it's necessary. Also, I have some canning recipes that I would like to try in small batches. Can you substitute the crock pot method for the pressure canner procedure? If so, how do you convert the time/temperature? Three days in a crock pot bath equal how much time at how many pounds in a pressure canner?

Or should I just stop confusing the matter with these questions?

I've never done the crock pot thing, but I can with a big canning pot.  It's pretty easy and it doesn't take 3 days.  It takes about 30 minutes to an hour depending on what you're canning.  If you can hot stuff, sometimes you don't even have to hot water bathe them.  The seals will just pop because the contents and the jar is hot.

I have a canning pot -- the kind with a wire rack that lowers the jars down into the bath. I don't have a pressure canner. As I understand it, these are two different contraptions -- the pressure canner being like a pressure cooker.

Or, am I still sadly confused?

Okay, I did a search. The first picture is what I have (in addition to my crock pot).
The second picture is what I don't have.

My question is how do I convert recipes (such as the one for wild yam above) that use picture B (which I don't have) to the equipment I DO have (like picture A or the crock pot)? Huh Huh

I'm just asking in case some of you more experienced recipe tinkerers (I know you're out there) know.

The towel doesn't have to be thick, just a barrier between the jar and the crockpot.  I have an older crock pot that is deeper that my larger one.  A quart jar will stand up with just enough room above it for the lid.

After the 3 days, I strained it. Then I let it cool and didn't make the salve/cream until the next day because I didn't have time.  For the cream, I used approximately 1 TBS of wax to slightly less that 1/2 cup of oil.  It was much too solid.  I tend to not measure very accurately, I just sort of mix things up.  I'm trying to be more consistent.  I have a recipe for a cold cream that I use often which has a nice consistency.  Here is what I am going to do with the next batch:

1/4 cup distilled water
1/8 teaspoon borax powder
1/2 cup olive oil (I will use the Wild Yam/oil mixture)
2 TBS beeswax.

Dissolve the borax in the water in a glass measuring cup.  Mix the oil and beeswax in another glass measuring cup and place in a pan of water.  Heat it until the beeswax is melted, stirring occasionally.  Then put the borax/water in the mocrowave for about 1 minute.  Remove the oil/wax from the stove and slowly add the water mixture to it.  Stir briskly, or whip in a blender.  The blender makes a nicer consistency, but it messier.

I'm not sure about the conversions from canner to crock pot.  I'm not sure I would use this for actual food recipes.  Rebekah had stated that you can do the wild yam in the pressure canner for 30 minutes on 10 pounds of pressure.  I decided to try the 3 days with the crock pot because my canner is too big to haul out for just one jar.  Hopefully someone will have other info to offer.
