I just came back from a new midwife (we moved) that I loved, but she had some disturbing comments on vitamin K. It is my understanding that she was once of a mind to campaigning against the shot mandate in NY, but after extensive research decided that there was no hope because of the research that was available. She said that any oral K (in diet or supplement form) is processed in the stomach and shed, rather than having any affect on the body like a shot into the bloodstream would so that would not be accepted as an alternative. She also said that the link to childhood leukemia is blown out of proportion in her findings and would not hold up as a counter-indication.
In addition she confirmed my fears that if I refuse the eye ointment and the K shot, i will have to have a home visit with a social worker to be sure I was informed in my decision. Their findings would go on file, and then if i ever had any other issue it would be considered a second offense and my children would be taken away during the investigation for "their own protection." This has happened to people she and I both know separately. UUUGH!! I can't stand when the government wastes time and $ on people who spent every ounce of energy trying to ensure their children's wellbeing and then overlooks real cases of neglect.
Okay, that was off topic, but I am wondering if anyone has ever heard the whole thing about oral vitamin K not affecting blood levels, or not really being very strongly linked with leukemia. I can have her dig up her sources if necessary, but I am now concerned. I think considering the options I would like to believe her. Especially since, as she pointed out, I am already on the radar as a resident of Westchester, NY who has 5 children and is the only homeschooler in my district. Oh Boy. Here come decisions. ~L

I hope this isn't a repeat of info. I skimmed this thread and didn't see it, but I didn't read the whole thread.

Anyway, one thing you can do to give your baby a better chance of having sufficient clotting factor, is to not cut the cord until it stops pulsing. The extra blood pumped from the placenta to the baby during that time, increases their clotting factor as compared to babies who's cord was cut prematurely.
