  Cooked veggies...good or bad
« on: April 17, 2009, 12:41:02 PM » by naturalgirl
I love cooked spinach, served with a tad of vinegar, butter and salt and pepper. I also loved my Grandma's canned beans served with cheese over top, and my aunt's creamy carrots with the taste of honey and orange in it. But still, I keep wondering. Am I just eating dead food? Is there any good left? In some health programs, I hear over and over again the shout: RAW RAW RAW! Are they right? Is raw really the best for us, or is it just a modern fad?

N.T. talks about some veggies (like spinach) that should be cooked or fermented and gives advice on the best way to cook, yet retain nutritional value, check out N.T.
Others are great raw and full of value that way, like juicing.

Just had a long discussion along this line last night with some friends.  She has brain cancer.  Found last Aug., had the tumor removed last Sept. - stage 4 brain cancer was the diagnosis.   Was told without chemo and radiation she would live 3-4 months.  They chose instead to do a juice diet, mainly carrot juice.  4 months later the tumor was back, 80%.  They then learned that the diet was wrong, carrots have natural sugar and she should have had NO sugar.  Switched to a sprout juicing regime and since then the tumor has NOT grown at all.  But then started having seizures so was put on Dilantin.  Later swelling, intense pain.  It is the fluids putting pressure on her head that were the cause.  After a horrible week they decided to try to remove the tumor again, very risky, but with much prayer all over the world (they are missionaries) she came out of the surgery well.

Anyway, the discussion surrounded diet - raw, mostly raw, cooked, MEAT?  I think it comes down to, what works for you.  Of course raw vegetables would be good for you, but some do need to be slightly cooked to release certain nutrients.  There are good things in eggs, raw milk.  In this young woman's case, food is medicine for her.  I need to eat better, but I don't need food as a medicine, as far as I know, but I need food for nourishing my my body - and most things you put in your body are not that.  As one friend says, "it's hard to find the food in the grocery store."

John the Baptist ate locust and honey.  Did he cook the locust?  I don't know.  I would sure have had to have a LOT of honey to put down a locust.  I do believe we are to eat natural foods, as close to the way they are produced as possible.  That means, no processed cereals.  Salt the way it comes out of the ground or sea, not with most of the minerals removed.  Beef  that is grass fed, the way God made cattle to eat.  Vegetables that are the size they are because of good soil, not because they are pumped up to be bigger (thus making them heavier - because they are  sold by the pound.)

Think about the way your great grandmother ate and that would be a good place to start.  Add more raw vegetables to your diet and see if you feel better.  Eat less white sugar and white flour and you have taken a giant step forward in improving your health.  I wouldn't focus on one specific "diet" like only raw food (meaning vegetables, though their is a line of thinking that any raw food is good for you, including meat)
but adding things, like raw vegetables, to your diet.

This young man last night was a meat and potatoes, no vegetables, man.  The night before her surgery they went out to eat, the only place open was a steak house.  He said they sat by the grill watching all the steak and fish come off, eating only salad from the salad bar.  And he said he could not believe it , but it didn't bother him.  We can change how we think and crave about food.  Add good stuff and you will stop craving the bad stuff.

That's my 2 cents.

There is a potential that John the Baptist may have eaten locusts, they are supposed to be pretty good when cooked.  But my understanding is that what he actually ate was locust beans, what we refer to as carob beans today.  I wrote a post on my blog about using carob in baking you can read about it here grains&more - carob, but basically it is a good source of calcium and fiber.  It is also currently being researched as an alternative protein source since the germ provides as much as 95% protein with a good balance of amino acids.

And yes, sugar feeds cancer so wherever possible it is best to avoid sugar from any source.

While I do not know a lot about raw foods I do know several people who are expert raw foodists and they feel that it provides a lot of health benefits.  For those of you in WV who are interested in this subject my friend Sally is the owner of Eats Of Eden and is an Ann Wigmore trained Raw Foods teacher plus a Nutrition Educator.
