Tynnille,
If you give him the oregano oil doses in an empty capsule, it's much easier to handle.  It's some strong stuff!

I have also heard great things about the grapefruit peel tea for chest congestion...good call BJ!!!  It's supposed to taste pretty good too.

Praying for you.  I'm the exact same way when my kids, dh, or I get sick.  I stand there scratching my head going 'OK...now what?'  Huh  Grin
Which is why I LOVE WTM!!!

The grapefruit peel tea sounds like a good idea. My sister also said she has the kids eat an entire orange when they have a fever. I bet these two things are related!?! We are fighting it and I think he feels better already. I am giving the natural remedies till tomorrow. I think we are on the edge of what may be acceptable. I just might have let it go too far. But I really want these things to work so that God may get all the Glory...but I don't want to be stubborn either. Just keep me in your prayers for discernment and clarity of thought.
Thanks ladies...your the best.

Sure!

Of course, organic is always best, but we've used plain old cheap grapefruit from Wal-Mart with good results.

You boil a pot of water, just like you're making tea.  Then, squeeze in grapefruit juice from the grapefruit, and put in about half to all of the peel.  Turn off the burner, and let it steep just like normal tea.  We just drink it once it's cooled enough to drink--about 10 minutes or so.

I think it tastes good just like that, but you can add honey for the healing, and the taste!   Grin

That's it!!

You can also add lemon juice. I have since learned that tangerine peelings are good too. I read that all citrus peels are good but especially the grapefruit peelings.
Oh by the way it was Skilliot and her sister that told me about the grapefruit peeling and I have been so thankful for it. Smiley

Have you all heard of many adult cases?  It's all over up here in MN, both in the schools and with home school families.  But I personally don't know of adults with it, only children, and usually under the teen years.

Just wondering . . .

I've heard of a few young to middle aged adults having it. A few died of it.

They said the older folks have immunity to it.

I've known 1 adult (30ish) w/ it. His mom (50ish), his twin kids (2), and his dad (50ish), Also another 2 year old (although it didn't spread to mom or older sibling (4), and another gal around 14. NO one I know personally has died of it so far.

Thanks, HF--I missed this.  Grin  I particularly think this is worth noting:

The Cytokine Storm Controversy
In answer to the current controversy over cytokine storms if using echinacea and elderberry during pandemic flu, I think authors Eric Yarnell, ND, Kathy Abscal, B.S. J.D., and Robert Rountree, M.D. say it best in their excellent book Clinical Botanical Medicine (a highly recommended book, by the way):

"Herbs in fact act as inflammation and immune modulators rather than as stimulants or suppressors (Yarnell, Abascal, Alt Comp Ther 2006). There is one interesting study that strongly supports our view, and shows that herbs may be capable of moderating the influenza 'cytokine storm.'"..."In the study, echinacea down-regulated, or normalized, the cytokine production in infected cells and up-regulated cytokine production in healthy cells."(Sharma M, Arnason JT, Burt A et al. Echinacea extracts modulate the pattern of chemokine and cytokine secretion in rhinovirus-infected and uninfected epithelial cells. Phytother Res 2006; 20:147-152.) Though the study was done on rhinoviruses, or colds, these authors and other herbalists feel confident in using herbs with historical benefit shown for flu due to clinical evidence of symptom reduction being the likely result of these herbs being used to quiet the cytokine storm."

More of this is in post #79.

Lemon balm is anti-viral, too,  BTW.  Wink

Just wanted to give a report from a friend.  Her daughter, 12, got what is probably swine (h1n1) flu a few days ago.  Fever, aches, throat, cough, mucus, felt awful.  She'd been doing herbal immune boosting (echinacea and elderberry) stuff, plus TTU and lots of fluids.  She and I have been co-learning all about herbs.  I've shared what I knew and vise versa.

Anyway, she stopped by yesterday and I gave her a blend of mullien-licorice tincture and wild cherry bark cough tincture.  I also gave her some colostrum I got from Beeyoutiful.  Last night she stopped the immune boosters and started the mullien and wild cherry and colostrum.  Within 24 hours now her daughter has seen a huge decrease in mucus, has perked up and has eaten some of each meal today, plus is drinking well and seems to really be on the mend.

Just wanted to share that - I like success stories.  I also like to know that the stuff I've made and have around here will come in handy should we need it!   Grin

That is awesome!  Those herbs for coughs/cutting mucous are so important to have on hand now.  Don't forget red clover and lobelia, too, if you have them.   Wink

Now, we hope she doesn't follow the trend of getting better and then worsening.   Undecided

I just got red clover.  Should I make a tincture of just that and then add it, do you think?  Or what should I combine with?  I do have lobelia, but have been cautious because of hearing about the stomach upset problems.  Do you use that by itself, or in combo?

My friend is a former nurse, and is watching her daughter carefully.  She's heard about the relapse thing, too.  Good thing the news (both good and bad) is moving around so people can be informed!  Thanks!

Some people like red clover--I don't.  Tongue  I've used it in tincture form and it's pretty effective stuff.  You could make a tea w/ yummier tasting herbs in it.  BHS store sells one w/ licorice root, lobelia, ginger root and red clover:  http://www.bulkherbstore.com/CTM  Cinnamon might help--orange peel...you know...you do it.  Wink

I use lobelia alone b/c it's a bit heat sensitive and I make my own.  Still getting experience w/ it over the past 2 years.  The built-in puking mechanism is for safety.  Small doses work best--I do a few drops w/ little ones and I've never had one throw up.

Okay, i think I have a minute to give you ladies an update on my son that had the horrible high fever, the highest reaching 105, but consistenly staying b/w 102-103 for 7 days and awful cough. I do not know if the flu actually turned into Secondary Pnuemonia or if it was just bad case of the Swine Flu since I never went to the Dr. to confirm. But on a couple occassions he had coughed up phlem that looked like it had some blood in it, not fresh red blood, but clotty type blood.

Well, he does not have a fever anymore and actualy it went down dramatically the next day after I started the Oreganol (Oil of Oregano). He is now back to his normal self, except for the cough and maybe needing a nap in the afternoon.

Here is all the things I did the starting Monday night thru Wednesday morn:

Oreganol  - anti-fungal/viral/bacterial - 5 drops under the tongue - every 2-4 hours. Plus rubbing it on chest, back, feet. This stuff is awful and the taste is persistent. He was a trooper though and took it anyway...but he is really sick of taking it.
Myrrh tincture - anti-viral/bacterial/fungal - given 8-10 drops in a juice 2 -3 times a day. Myrrh is supposed to increase oxygen to the blood, thought this would be helpful since his lungs were affected.
Eucolyptus Oil - in warm steam vaporizor - all night, plus tent sessions for 20 minutes at a time every few hours. We have a bunk room so it was easy to hang a sheet up and make a 3'x5' room that he could be enclosed in.
Oranges - helps lower fever - gave a whole orange after steam sessions or warm baths.
Onion Packs - loosens chest congestion - steamed or baked onions till soft, chopped in vitamix and let cool enough to not burn. Slopped onto chest and back and covered with SaranWrap and then laid a heating pad on top for about 30 minutes. I did this about 4 times I think.
Tea - Mullein, Comfrey, Lobelia & Red Clover, Red Raspberry Leaf, Mullein - to drink throughout the day.
Herbal Tincture - Mullein (4 parts), Cherry Bark (2 parts),Lobelia (1 part), dandelion (1 part). Cinnamon stick - 1 tsp. several times a day
I did give him grapefruit tea once and a couple of baths, one with ginger, vinegar, and espons salt.

I am still giving him Oreganol 3 times a day and 1 dose of the Myrrh since I heard this thing can come back with a vengence. And the vaporizer is still on at night since baby sisiter has a cough as well. I also am still giving the mullein tincture since the cough is still around. I really think these things kept him from going to the Dr and from getting worse. I was vigelent fro the first two days once I had the oregaol and I am glad I stuck to it.

Just my experinece but I wuld suggest it to anyone who is dealing with this awful flu....next time I will give the oreganol much sooner before i have to fight such a full blown case.

Hope this helps and sorry this is so long. Tennille

I know I put oregano oil on a cold sore the other day (or maybe it was thyme, but I'm pretty sure oregano) and 1/2 my face about went numb and iit burned!! OMGOSH!! never again! Smiley

Yay Tynnille!  Excellent work!

We used oregano oil last year for the flu that went through our family.  DH had it, then I started comign down with it the day the oregano oil arrived in the mail.  I got over it very quickly taking the OO.  Then dh came home from work a few days later with the same flu AGAIN...and immediately hit the OO.  He was feeling awful, and after taking the OO, he slept for about an hour, and was feeling SO much better.  We would start feeling icky again if we went over 3-4 hours without taking it though. He bounced back so quickly, and told me that we should always keep it in the house.

We started taking it in OJ, but the oils just float on top and burn you good anyway. Cheesy  So then I started putting my dose in an empty gel-cap, and that was just as effective but much less painful.

Your boy is a trooper, and so are you!

Hey Mommie,
Yes it is actually a brand called Oreganol, but my sisiter gets the NOW brand that is full strength, BUT she mixes a 1 part Oregano Oil and 2 or 3 parts Olive Oil (which is the blend that the Oreganol is).
The myrrh tincture is awful tasting too, it is made from tree sap. I use the brand that came in the yellow-orange label from the health food store.
I really think any of the natural anti-biotic herbs (garlic, olive leaf, GSE, etc) would have worked just as the Oregano Oil did, the biggest thing is giving large doses, when case is full blown, and being consistent. I just choose to use Oreganol this time around. I did use Olive Leaf with the first one sick...he got over it faster then my last one - I was more consisitent earlier (I guess that is the benefit of being the first one sick...mom is on top of her game)

Gwen...just by chopping the garlic, wrapping it in a cloth, dousing it with boiling water and putting it near the area?

Sorry, I'm just now seeing this.  Yes!  This is how I did a garlic poultice...just let them cool a bit.  I put one on each side of ds's neck right over his infected tonsils.  He'd had a bad infection for 2 days, and had been taking fresh garlic in honey religiously with no change.  The second night, we did the poultices for only 2 minutes...and by the next morning, one was almost totally healed up, and he'd turned the corner.  We did one more the next day (2 min.) and he was well in 24 hours.

If I was dealing with serious chest congestion, I might do garlic and then an onion poultice right on the chest.  But I would limit the garlic to 2 min. at a time.
