  Potty Training hits wall
« on: April 28, 2009, 08:10:58 AM » by luvs2bmom
Hello,

I am looking for any advise!  I am hitting a wall with my 2 1/2 yr old son.  I read the book "how to potty train in less than a day"  and started with my son.  He does everything perfectly except go potty!!  He holds his urine on the potty and will produce a dribble but get up and a few minutes later urinate on the floor.  I have explained to him that it isn't good to go on the floor and bribed him to stay on the toilet when I know he has to go but he still will hold his urine.

Does anyone have any tricks?  I've tried dipping his hand in water, reading to him to get him to relax, bribing him to stay on the pot for an hour and still nothing.  I am getting so frustrated and my husband would like this finished this week.    He is so smart....to smart with this!!  Any help would be appreciated!!

Thanks,
Stephanie Huh

After this morning I've decided that he likes ME changing him to much!!  I am putting him back in diapers and making him change himself (you know to motivate that the toilet is much easier)!

I'll post how it goes!

Just a thought... my 3 year old son wasn't interested in potty training until we put away the diapers and made him start wearing underwear. It didn't take too many accidents before he realized that it was much more comfortable to pee in the potty instead of making himself soaking wet.

The pee training went extremely well as a result. Unfortunately, due to several factors, three months later, he is temporarily back in diapers, but when we are ready to work on potty training again, I think I will go with the change-to-underwear technique again.

We used the potty training method at www.easypottytraining.com if you are interested in reading further, or you can pm me.

Thank you!!  I will try that in the morning.  He doesn't seem to mind the wet pullups anymore than diapers, though he has gotten very good at dressing himself today!! Smiley

Hope it helps! My son didn't care about the "wet sensation" pull-ups either. I did notice, however, that when we switched him back to diapers, for the first few days he would hold his pee almost as though he was still in underwear. So maybe once they get used to being dry in underwear, pull-ups would work for an outing?

maybe try taking a break.  then coming back to it in a month or so.  Do you know someone who has a tiny baby that wears diapers that you could compare that too?  That he is a big boy and the baby is tiny and needs diapers and he doesn't anymore?  THat worked for a friend of mine.  She tried when her daughter was 3 and nothing worked then when her sister had a baby, the then 3 1/2 year old said "I don't need these diapers anymore, I'm gonna save them for my new cousin"  Just a thought.  btw, that is great that he can hold it at all and control where he goes.  That sounds like he knows his stuff.

I thought I would throw something out here... I would totally discourage you from mixing up the child, even for outings. Once you decide to potty train the child, take him/her COMPLETELY out of ALL diapers and pull ups. Just put them in plain old underwear. Stay home and don't go on outings for the first few days.

I am speaking from experience of potty training 3 boys, all around the age of 2 - 2 1/2.... With the last one that I started 1 month ago, I couldn't figure out why he was taking so long to get the hang of it.. then I realized that I kept switching him from undies to pull ups (for outing conveniences  Roll Eyes)  I decided I had had enough and did not put anymore pull ups on him. With it just a day or 2, he was potty trained.. in the peeing area that is....

I am still having issues with the pooping for some reason that I have never had to deal with before.. so looking for advice on that  Wink

Its_me, I'm having trouble with training for #2 also.

The "pee training" is doing fine, but DS (now 3 1/2 years old) is afraid of pooping in the potty and doesn't tell me when he needs to go. Doesn't seem concerned about splashes, flushing, or anything of that sort. He thinks it will hurt. When I catch him about to go and put him on the potty, he doesn't go. He gives half-hearted attempts, and says that it's "not ready" to come out. He has had problems with constipation in the past, but my thinking is that if he can do it in a diaper (or undies) he can do it with equal ease in the potty. If we could just get past the mental barrier, I think we would be doing fine!

I'd welcome advice on this issue, too.

I recommend the naked $50 for him.

Let him run around commando from the waist down for a week and then pay $50 for someone to come clean the carpet!  Keep him close to you for a week, and when you catch him in the act, rush to the potty.

Thanks for the $50 advice!  Cheesy

I did do that. When I was 1st potty training, he was running around commando....

Mine is not afraid to go #2... I just don't think he recognizes the "signal" yet... most of the time by the time he realizes whats going on... theres already some in his undies.. but he finishes into the toilet... I just want him to make the realization on time  Roll Eyes

I did try the cold shower yesterday, and after that he has made it to the toilet for #2 a few times already.. so maybe that is the answer.. I'll keep trying...

Oh, he is just a few months past his 2nd birthday... so I'm not freaking out too much yet  Roll Eyes

Here's the method that I used that worked in two tries, and your kid cleans the floor Cheesy

My boy is just plain stubborn, and didn't want to poop in the potty.  I cleared the calender for a few days, and had him run around in just his t-shirt.  I told him that the poo-poo had to go in the potty...no more diapers.

About an hour later, I found the first pile on the rug in his room.  I scolded him and made him watch me put on gloves, take it to the potty, and scrub his carpet.  I told him that was the last time that Mommy was putting his poo-poo in the potty, and from now on he would have to do it.

A couple of hours later, pile #2 appears in his room.  Showtime.  This time, I make him pick it up with his bare hand and carry it to the potty.  He was NOT happy about it, and was wretching and gagging.  Then I re-instructed him that he HAS to put his poop in the potty while I disenfected his hand and then took him to scrub his rug.

It only took 2 tries of him having to manually carry it to the potty before the light came on, and he's been a devoted potty pooper since. Smiley
