  Christmas gift ideas....need help
« on: September 22, 2006, 07:05:09 AM » by queentea
I like to make up baskets for those hard to shop for people.  Traditionally, I bake items or make jams, apple sauce, trail mix for the baskets.  This year I would like to do a "health and beauty" basket theme, and want to use some of the great recipes I've learned hear (herbal, vinegar hair rinse, salves, etc.)  I was wondering if you may have ideas on where to get some pretty bottles/containers, to put some of these things in.  Price is a issue, as I would like to keep this fairly cheap!
thanks,

I received a storebought "bath teabag" for a gift last year, and this would be so easy to make yourself!  Just put some dried, sweet smelling and soothing herbs (lavender, chamomile, rosemary, dried rose petals, etc...) in an oversized teabag and instruct the user to steep their bathwater in the lovely smelling tea.  You could make the oversized teabag out of thin muslin or cheesecloth - sewing it, or just gathering it up at the top and tying a pretty ribbon.

I got some books at the library that had some lovely soap, lotion, lip balm, and beauty treatment recipes in it.  You might look for such books for similar ideas in your own library.  I think this is a fabulous idea!  I've been thinking of doing this myself!

Bath Teas are an awesome gift idea! I love those things. Cheesy

As for Christmas, I sell more bath salts at Christmastime than any other time of year because they make beautiful gifts, and "stocking stuffers."

Easy, Moisturizing All Natural Bath Salt Recipe:

You'll need:
one 8-oz clear glass jar (Wal Mart, canning section or craft section)
ribbon or raffia (Wal Mart, craft section)
8 oz Epsom Salts (Wal Mart, health section. One 4 lb bag = about 2.00)
few drops essential oil of your choice (Lavender, Rosewater, Juniper Berry, Patchouli, Jasmine, Eucalyptus are all favorites)
1/2 tbs. olive oil
1/8 tsp. OR LESS Paprika, Henna, Parsley Powder or Turmeric (for color)
cereal bowl
wax paper

1.Warm olive oil and your choice of coloring agent on stove at med. heat to just above room temp (not quite as warm as a bath would be), stirring while warming. Remove from heat.
2.Add oil and color blend to bath salts. Mix well.
3. Add essential oil of your choice to salts mixture ONE DROP AT A TIME til you think it smells just right.
4. When mixed well and ready, spread salts out on big sheet of wax paper to let dry. Do not let dry completely, just enough so that the salts won't cake inside your jar.
5. Spoon into jar. Tie w/ ribbon or raffia for decor, label.

It's that easy!!!! Enjoy your Christmas prep!!! God bless.

Google.  There's tons of sights that sell empty glass and plastic containers in blue, green, clear and amber.

THANK YOU FOR THAT RECIPE SAMANTHA!  This is something I can do here and it is almost non-existent.  I brought some bath sea salts back from the U.S. and all the young ladies love the smell and want to know where they can get some.  This year is going to be GREAT!  I am excited to start.

Weren't you the helpful poster on cinnamon oil that made me laugh?   Cheesy

Thanks for another helpful post!  I love making Eppie bath salts and struggled to figure out how to color them naturally.  My recipe calls for 1/4 C. each of cornstarch and baking powder per 2 C. of Eppies...would this prevent caking?  Add some bubbly? Huh

Thanks again!

Got any guys on your list?  Some of the burn, bug bite or abrasion treatment salves would be good for them - for anyone really, but my man would look at the ribbon stuff and hand the whole basket to me!  But if there was a burlap bag tied in twine string with non-flowery tins labeled "Bug Bites", "Cuts & Scrapes", and "Sunburn" -  he would that.

Ya know, I was just thinking about that.  The baskets I make are usually for a couple, and I was thinking "what can I do for the men"  I know my man would want nothing to do with the "girly" beauty stuff.  I am open to any ideas and recipes.

I wanted to to make natural shaving soaps in a cup with a shaving brush.  Haven't done this yet, but thought it would be a great gift (detergent free).

How about homemade vanilla or "kits" to teach someone how to make it?  Some vodka...a bottle w/ a label or ribbon...and a vanilla bean or 2?  And of course, instructions!   Wink  I know there's a thread here somewhere on it...

HB put this out in Recipies earlier:

Non-Petroleum Jelly
1 cup oil (your choice)
1/4 cup beeswax
Melt oil and beeswax together. Pour into containers, let cool.

So, I've never done this, but I would think you could make your own 'Green Wound Smear" by putting plantain (and your other favorite herbies) in the heated mixture til the green comes out, strain & cool.  (How's that for untested, nonspecific directions?!?).

There's gotta be someone here who knows how this _really_ works-

And the little containers could be just baby food jars (don't have any myself, but some neighbor might) and get office supply store label stickers to cover the "gerber" on the top.

I gotta goto bed - I could go on forever on one crazy idea...........

When warm (80 degrees), which was rare in our house, it was goopier...but now it's firm.  It does become pliable/supple/whatever the right word is   Roll Eyes ...with warm fingers pressing it. Can't remember my beeswax ratio:coconut oil...just experimented.  Have you tried it yet w/ a different oil?

Still waiting on my beeswax.  I have to get a pan and some paper cups.  As soon as I do, I intend to make a few recipes.

Haha, yes I made the post on Cinnamon oil.

Um, about the salts, when I started making them I used baking soda because a recipe I had like called for it. But I quit using it because it made the salts cake. I don't use anything in my salt base anymore but salts themselves. I actually use "two varieties of ogranic salts" haha. Anyways, the salts w/o starches and powders look nicer, don't cake, and I like them better than way in my bath as well. Also, I think the fragrances of your oils come out better.

As far as bubbly...do you mean "bubbly" as the salts are bubbly? Or adding a bit of "bubbly!!!?"
Haha...well, if you mean about baking powder making the salts more bubbly, I know when I used baking soda it made the salts fizzy a little, but not much, not enough to sacrifice how pretty they look w/o dull powdery stuff inside, you know? As far as if you meant adding actual "bubbly" haha...I've never added any to my salts before, or seen a recipe for that either. So I'm not sure.

So, my brain was rolling on it last night, but only a few ideas made it to daybreak.

My man is not a regular shaver, so the shaving cream options never occured to me.  I think that a hand soap/cleaner with neutral scent and some sort of abrasive would really be nice for a guy who gets greasy/dirty daily or on the weekend - like a Lava brand soap.  But put lavander in it and wrap it in crinkly paper and he won't touch it - too girly.  (Course I would use it scented or not 'cuz it is nice to get the grime ground off).

But I never did come up with any recipes or better wrapping ideas that I can remember.  Sorry - pregnancy brain strikes again.

Thanks for the explanantion on why you choose salts alone.  Smiley  Cheaper, too, + less steps = Hooray!   Grin Grin

You have a great sense of humor about you that transmits through your text!  I love it-- Roll Eyes

Bubbly...yes, I meant fizzy from the baking powder/cornstarch.   Tongue  Might be fun to put some real "bubbly" in.   Roll Eyes Shocked Grin Wink

One of my friends has bits of herbs/spices in hers...small amounts that look pretty...I'll ask her what they are.   Not enough to clog a drain, for sure!  LOL

You could use canning jars with cloth and pretty ribbon, use jelly jars for smaller quantities they usually come with pretty labels, and pints or quarts for larger quantities.  You could also check the thrifts stores for baskets etc., they always have that stuff.  They have those decorated metal tins that cookies etc. come in too.  That might be an idea.  Just my input.

Those are an excellent idea.

If you're making herbal mixtures or moisturizing salts or fragranced things however, you will want to seal your jars as much as possible (at least keep them closed.) Using only fabric w/ a metal ring around the jar will breathe too much. So, if you add fabric (which is always very pretty) add it over the can insert (you know, the round thing that seals) and under the ring. It will be pretty, and still keep your goodies fresh.  Cool

I have a recipe for a craft dough that is a great idea for children to make on their own or with the help of someone else.  You can use these as ornaments or for gifts.  You could also tie them on a package or gift bag with a little ribbon for decoration.
Many of you will probably remember doing them as kids.

Apple-Cinnamon Dough

1/2 cup applesauce
2 Tablespoons White Glue
1 cup ground Cinnamon
rolling pin and cookie cutters

1.  In a bowl, mix the applesauce and glue with a spoon

2.  Mix in the cinnamon a little at a time

3.  Knead the dough with your hands until it is smooth.  If the dough is too sticky, then add more cinnamon.  If it is too dry, then add more applesauce.

4.  Mold the dough into shapes, or use cookie cutters.

5.  Use a straw to poke a hole where you would like to hang with ribbon or an ornament hanger.

6.  Let it air dry for 1-2 days(or more), turning it occasionally.

HAVE FUN KIDS!!!!
