  cinnamon oil question
« on: September 22, 2006, 01:43:26 PM » by servantgirl
I read on bulkherbstore that you can help a cold by using cinnamon essentiall oil on the soles of the feet. Would I need to dilute this first?

Also, the lady at the HFS suggested Cassia oil since it is cheaper than cinnamon. Does it work just as well, or should I just get the cinnamon?

Thanks!

YES! ALWAYS dilute Cinnamon oil first. I would suggest a 6% Cinnamon oil & 94% carrier (whether oil, floral water, or other carrier.) It is one of the strongest (and in my opinion, one of the most useful) essential oils around. Smiley

Also, be very sure that the Cinnamon oil you are using is Cinnamon Leaf oil (as opposed to Cinnamon Bark) because Cinnamon Bark Essential Oil is only for aromatic purposes, it's not to be used on the skin. In fact, it's considered a dermal toxin.

Cinnamon is one of my favorite herbs/spices/essential oil. Best wishes!

***PS***
Other Cinnamon Ess. Oil remedies I would suggest for colds are:

A mullien leaf, chamomile, echinacea (tops & roots) tea w/ 1 drop Cinnamon ess. oil (You can add more Cinnamon one drop at a time to taste if the 1 drop in your tea isn't enough.)

Inhale Cinnamon ess. oil to soothe your throat and "get things flowing again" in the nasal area.  Cheesy
To do this, add 1 or 2 drops (more if you decide you want, but only 1 or 2 at first. Cinnamon is sort of like Peppermint or Onion. It's The Man and it's there to take over, haha.) Anyways, add Cinnamon ess. oil to mixing bowl filled w/ hot water and inhale steam for 20 min. Lots of times it's suggested you put a towel over your head and the bowl, creating your own little mini sauna. I don't like for my face to sweat when the rest of my is still room temp haha, so I don't do that. I'll leave that part up to you.

Also, Cinnamon sticks (yummy Cheesy) make excellent teas for all kinds of things. Cinnamon gets your blood circulating and helps the body cleanse itself by promoting proper function of the urinary tract. A Cinnamon stick and honey tea (w/ echinacea is always a plus) is great for a cold. In fact, I have a cold at the moment and I'm about to go make that exact tea.

Thanks Alittlemore!
I really appreciate your suggestions. And thanks for letting me know to look for the leaf oil rather than the bark, I think I would have bought the bark oil without knowing.

I promise to ask you more essential oil questions in the future! Wink
Thanks a lot!

Thank you for the laughs!    Grin Cheesy

I'm at the end of 2 weeks w/o my husband, and I'm so tired...I've been wanting to learn more about using cinnamon oil and you taught me much--with giggles, too!  Thank you!

I am glad that you mentioned that fact.  I had been contemplating buying some.  (cold season Sad ) So far, all I have seen is Cinnamon Bark.  Where does everyone get their Cinnamon Leaf?

I found it one time and haven't been able to find it again, which was actually a bummer because I've needed it more than once. Sad

The only other time I've seen it was from a bulk wholesale sight where I buy essential oils by the pound. Sooooooo...... if I find a place (or if someone else does, tell us!) I will let you ladies know. But when we get our business website up, I will link all of you ladies and you can find it there. (I'm very proud of my essential oils, both for quality and packaging, and because I offer them at very low prices. Cool)

In the mean time, if you're looking for help especially for colds, I highly suggest Eucalyptus. Shake several drops onto a clean wash cloth and inhale as often as you think of it. (If it isn't burning your nose/throat when you're inhaling it, you don't have it close enough to your mouth/nose. It's a good idea to cover your mouth and the cloth w/ your hands (sort of like if you were hyperventilating I guess haha.) Now, it won't burn after you've done it a few times, but you want to be sure you're REALLY inhaling it. The best thing is to make sure you've sprinkled the drops in one little area so you can put your mouth on the cloth to inhale the oil in with out your lips actually touching the eucalyptus oil (It will burn!)

It actually leaves sort of a pleasantly sweet and refreshing after taste and feeling in your mouth/throat. If your little boy has a cold, you can show daddy how "stong and big and brave" he is, cause even tho it burns, he's a man and he inhales it. Wink Haha, but maybe explain that not everything that burns when inhaled is proving manhood.

Anyways, people have even cured pneumonia (spelling?) by inhaling Eucalyptus. I've used it to treat allergies and cold/flu type throat/nose/ear issues.

So...here's to menthol. Grin

Be sure, however, that when you buy Eucalyptus, you by Euc. Globulus, not Euc. Citridora. The Citridora is just like an off candle (yuck!) and just having the bottle in your med. cabinet will make the whole area smell like Off.  Tongue (I know, because I once bought a whole pound of the stuff by mistake.)

So...enjoy your essential oils, always be patient when choosing/buying/using them. Blessings!!!

Hi Servantgirl,

I have a difference of opinion from Missy on the cinnamon oil.  I know many places recommend only the cinnamon leaf oil, but our family has always used organic cinnamon bark oil.  Obviously, the cinnamon bark is what a person uses as a spice for cooking and taking internally (not the leaf) - so it makes sense that the oil from the bark is meant as more than just a fragrance.

Cinnamon oil, admittedly, can burn the skin and it is usually recommended to be at a 1/40 - 1/50 in a carrier oil to avoid sensitivity... however, our family has used it consistently "neat" (undiluted) on the bottoms of our feet with no sensitivity, and only slightly diluted 1/8 - 1/10 in a carrier oil on our other skin...  If someone starts to get a little "warm" sensation, we just drop a couple drops of oil over the spot and rub it in to dilute -- but that hasn't been needed in most cases.  (Fair skinned people are generally more sensitive, so it is a good idea to start off with it diluted and see how you do.)

In any case, I just wanted to say that for our family, the cinnamon bark oil is all we have used on a regular basis, though we do have the cinnamon leaf oil as well - which just sits there all "lonely" and unused in our oil medicine case...   Grin

I went to buy some cinnamon oil this afternoon and found a 1 oz. bottle for $25!! Shocked Shocked

So...I found the Chinese Cinnamon someone mentioned (cassia) for $6/oz...hoping it will work, too.  Sure smells yummy in here!  Diluted a few drops in a bit of almond oil on my hands and rubbed it in.  Stung a bit on my eczema-prone skin, but nowhere else.

Glad to have a use for my cinnamon sticks, too--thanks a lot!

I'm also brewing some Immune Booster from www.bulkherbstore.com--mine's in vodka, and my friend is doing her inaugural batch in glycerin...we'll swap a bottle and compare!

Thanks Jacque! Smiley

One more question for all, I seem to remember reading somewhere about a certain ess oil that you could use to put on the area of a lymph node to help it "unclog" and help the lymph break up and move more freely. Anyone know what that might be?
Thanks again!

I thought about recommending Cassia, but didn't because it, too, can burn/irritate the skin like Cinnamon bark, possibly even more so.

As far as using oils not recommended for skin...simply use caution. All too often we are much too careless about burning our skin. (I'm thinking particularly of when using garlic at the moment.) It might not "be too bad" or you might be able to "make it stop" but you've still burned your skin, which is VERY dangerous. You open all kinds of doors for damage and infections when you burn any part of your body.

Everyone is different. Different skin types, climates, ages, health conditions and (many) other factors decide how various elements affect different people.

As far as skin applications go, it's very important to be safe. Choose a different method before you choose to risk burning your skin. Also, I know one lady spoke of using Cinnamon oil on the bottoms of feet. Many oils which are considered too strong for dermal use are applied as such because the soles of feet have much thicker skin than other parts of the body.

SIMPLY DO NOT BE CARELESS. Take every application/method/element as an individual practice. Don’t make it a rule of thumb to just put "whatever" on your skin, not heeding herbal warnings, cautions, or others’ experience.

YooperMama, I've not experimented much with Cassia oil yet. Please let me know how it helps and what you thought and such. Thanks so much!!!

***PS*** Cinnamon oil tends to be more expensive, it's true. But it's very strong and will last you much longer than a number of other essential oils.  Cool So if you really want Cinnamon, just remember that it goes a very long way, you don't have to feel so bad about the price. (Although, $25 an oz. is rather steep. I would say anywhere between $12 and $18 an oz. is fair.)

Thank you for the warning...I know sometimes I get excited about something new and jump in... Undecided  This stuff isn't like playing dress-up, I guess--just throw it on!

The cassia oil sure does sting, but I can't compare it b/c I've never used cinnamon oil.  It'll be hard to tell what helps this cold...I'm trying Immune Booster for the first time, as well as returning to my Herbal Fiberblend capsules to "regulate" things a bit...eating on vacation wasn't ideal. Roll Eyes  I'm also using Emergen-C...lots of fluids...epsom salt baths...

Still laughing about "the Man, and he's coming to take over"....   Grin

Haha...well...I wanted to stress the importance of not over doing it so no one made themselves sick w/ cinnamon fumes. Soooo, I figured putting it into Help Meet terms would help get the point across.

In one of my herbals I read about making your own. I think it was ABC Herbal.

In a double boiler I heated olive oil lightly and steeped high quality cinnamon sticks in it for about 20 minutes then cooled. Works great for us!

This is a Cinnamon infusion oil, not a Cinnamon essential oil. So they are different, and Cinnamon essential oil is much stonger, although a Cinnamon infusion oil is useful for many things. You can also make a Cinnamon syrup with honey or a cinnamon tincture to treat many different ailments.

Cinnamon is one of my favorites! I'm glad to see so many people using it, I think it's often times very under-appreciated. Way to be, herbfever!   Cool

I apologize if I came across like this was an essential oil it is not as you said. It is an infusion that I use on the bottoms of feet & chest during sickness as recommended in the ABC Herbal.  Cinnamon eo too expensive for our budget! Smiley

Don't apologize! You didn't sound like anything.  Cool

And, for everyone who is wanting to apply Cinnamon oil to skin but can't find/do not like Cinnamon Leaf, a Cinnamon infusion oil is actually a much safer choice. Olive oil works well as a carrier, so does Sweet Almond if your skin is ultra sensative.

Don't apply to broken skin.

Hi, I'm new here, but I just wanted let you all know that I found organic cinnamon leaf oil at Mountain Rose Herbs  for $7.50 for 1 oz.  I'm assuming it's the same stuff you're talking about, ALittleMore Huh.  I surely hope so, since that's apparently a great price!

My 2yr.old DD "taste-tested" my little dish of about 1TBS of oil to 5 drops of cinnamon bark oil.  I'm guessing she took in about 1teaspoon but I'm not sure.  I gave her mouth a good rinse then gave her water to drink.  She's totally asleep now (naptime) and I'm wondering what I should do?  Should I be concerned?  What signs should I look for?  Thanks for any advice.
