Need a natural pick me up while breastfeeding
« on: June 01, 2009, 06:37:34 PM » by 5xmomma
I know I shouldn't have caffeine while nursing, so does anyone have any natural suggestions to catching a second wind in the mid mornings. I have 5 children 5 and under, so taking a nap is not a reality without always turning on the tv.

Hi!  Smiley

Green tea provides a more natural lift than coffee...even extra water at 10 AM helps me.  Smiley  Are you still taking some kind of prenatal, if you're recently postpartum?

Maybe a green grass type of drink?  Tongue

Peppermint or ginger teas may give you a lift...lemon balm, too.

Doesn't green tea have caffeine in it?
I am trying to take my prenatal. My baby is only 2 1/2 weeks. My hubby went back to work part time and this morning I realized how tired I am at that time of day. (I was when I was pregnant as well)
I will definately try the peppermint tea. What green drink were you thinking?
Thanks for the advice.

Here is a list of ingredients in what I consider the ultimate 'green drink', SuperFood.

Dr. Schulze's SuperFood

And an entire thread about Dr. Schulze's products and where to buy them;

Products

Green tea does contain caffeine, so you may want to avoid it.  With that many young children and a newborn, you most likely need all the nutrients you can get.  I highly recommend that you try to get this superfood I linked to above.  It can be taken instead of pre-natal vitamins and delivers a BIG punch in nutrition.  You could also drink fruit juices or fruit smoothies, good broths, or a nutritious snack.  If you are b-feeding, you will need to keep your calorie count up as well as getting lots of vitamins and minerals.

My children adapted well to being still while I read aloud to them.  I know it isn't a total 'rest', but will keep you off your feet and give you a chance to nurse the baby.  Having a structured day with reading time, cartoon or video time, snack times, etc. will help to keep your children busy enough for you to plan an opportunity for rest.

Peppermint or ginger teas may give you a lift...lemon balm, too.

Just FYI...
"The Nursing Mother's Herbal" states that Peppermint is used to decrease milk supply, while ginger and lemon balm may help to increase your supply.  Not all women respond the same to the same herb, so if you try peppermint tea, just be aware if your supply starts to decrease, that may be why!

I am curious to see more replies to your post 5xmomma, I have been relying on caffeine to get me going in the morning, but I think it is now interferring with my let-down reflex.

I am going to try the ginger tea...more milk is not a bad thing for me right now!

Thanks for the tip about the peppermint. At this point I won't even try it because I just don't want to risk the headache of my milk supply going down.

http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/view/61042 explains a bit why green tea's caffeine doesn't affect us like coffee's.  That's why I suggested it.  Wink

I've never heard that about peppermint...surprising.  I read more here:  http://www.breastfeeding.com/all_about/fenugreek/all_about_fenugreek_decrease_milk_supply.html.  It would take quarts, and it looks like the EO is used for that purpose.  As an EO, that seems to be when it works as an anti-galactagogue.  Peppermint taken internally is not described as having that action b/c the EO in the tea is so low, but when concentrated (as an EO) it than has that effect.

Wouldn't something like ginseng help?  Cayenne?   Shocked  Cinnamon?  Let us know what you find out.   Smiley

Great ideas that this nursing Mama can use, too!  Grin

I just wanted to add my endorsement for Superfood.  I made some up and it is great stuff.  I am nursing my 6th little one and Superfood has had such an impact on me.  I have been feeling so much better and it is great to know that it is just food and is loaded with lots of good vitamins and minerals, etc.  I no longer take a vitamin- Superfood covers it all.

You can make some yourself or I know of some cheaper places to get some if you are interested. It is just too expensive to buy the Dr.Schulze brand!

The link about green tea was very helpful and fascinating. It's definately something worth trying. Having coffee is somewhat of a "comfort food"  Smiley to me, but maybe I can get green tea to become that.
Also thank you for the info about peppermint. According to that article, the peppermint tea in moderation would not harm my milk supply.
You women are all so helpful! I have been reading Well Tell Me for over a year now and I am so thankful to this website and the women willing to take the time to share. I have recommended this site to so many women I know.

Do you all think that Mama's Red Raspberry Brew would be a good one because it has Nettles in it which has lots of vit/min? That should help with a boost!

More good ideas!  Yes, the RR tea would be great, and many have raved about the liquid chlorophyll.

I'm learning about nourishing herbal infusions!!  I love drinking Nettle and Oatstraw infusions!   Smiley    An infusion is one ounce of herbs by weight in a quart jar, you then fill the jar up with hot water,  put a lid on it,  and let it steep for  4 hours to overnight.  There you have an inexpensive all natural vitamin and mineral supplement!   Drinking Nettle infusions is said to increase and enrich mother's milk within two weeks!!

Here are some videos of Susan Weed making nourishing herbal infusions! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pKpe_YGUUw&feature=channel_page

Blessing's,

PS. I have a friend who started drinking nettle infusions and she finally has a happy calm baby!!!!!   We will post her testimony sometime when she comes to visit me.

Interesting about Nettles, b/c as an astringent, it is noted for decreasing milk.

Interesting... I've always read that stinging nettles are a natural anti-histamine.  I use a stinging nettle tincture for allergies and insomnia, every time I take it I immediately get sleepy.

Tinctures (alcohol) extract the medicinal (poisonous) properties of plants.   Certain herbal alkaloids and resins are extractable only into alcohol, not water.   Nourishing factors found in herbs, such as vitamins and minerals, are poorly extracted into a alcohol tincture , but are extracted in water, like an infusion.

I always make my tinctures with a water/alcohol combination for that very reason (to get properties that are both water extractable and alcohol extractable), but hadn't really thought about the anti-histamine properties not being effective from water.  I had the same results with using nettle as a hot tea.... but maybe my brain was playing a trick on me since I was expecting to get sleepy.  Cheesy

The Nourishing herbal infusions e-book I have, says to only try one Nourishing herb at a time, that way you can tell which ones are the best choice for you.   Smiley

Just a caution concerning herbs,  exspecially if using such a large amount like an infusion .  Many practices in the commercial herb trade are appalling!  You can find more information about this on Dr. Schultz website, and by doing a google search.
I buy mine here:

RB-
I didn't know this--I think this is information everyone should know!

So I wonder if the astringent properties are present w/ the infusion?  RRL is in that category, too, but it's supposed to *help* w/ milk.  Huh

M/b the hot water made you sleepy, too, RR!  Cheesy

I personally have not had a decrease in my milk supply since drinking the infusions, rather the opposite.  Smiley  I guess since we are all different, you could try the Nettles or RRL Yooper, and then let us know if you get tired or have milk supply issues.    Cheesy

I'm thinking it can only help, really.  I saw it noted in Practical Herbalism about the Nettles and milk. Wondering how the alcohol tincturing works vs. an infusion here... BUT RRL is always touted as being great for milk.  I'm drinking my RRL infusion now.  Yummier than Nettles!

My supply will probably jump anyhow, b/c I'm drinking more, period.   Roll Eyes  I will see how I react.  Wink

From Rosemary Gladstar on Peppermint:

"Peppermint has often been called "a blast of pure green energy".  It's not that there aren't stronger stimulants, but few make you as renewed and refreshed as peppermint does."

Well, I thought I would just let you know what I have tried. I switched to a cup of green tea in the morning, and taking supermom vitamins. This has definately helped. I love the vitamins. I do think they have given me more energy.
