  Vasovagal Syncope (fainting)
« on: July 15, 2009, 02:09:17 PM » by HeyMom
Vasovagal syncope is the most common cause of fainting. It occurs when your body reacts in an exaggerated way to such triggers as the sight of blood or extreme emotional distress. The trigger results in a sudden drop in your heart rate and blood pressure, which reduces blood flow to your brain and causes you to briefly lose consciousness.

Vasovagal syncope is usually harmless and requires no treatment. But your doctor may recommend tests to rule out more-serious causes of fainting, such as heart disorders.

the above was the definition at Mayo Clinic dot com for what a surgeon said I experienced yesterday while she removed a lymph node as an out patient.

has anyone else experienced this?

Afterwards I was extremely weak and I assume due to the blood pressure lowering at a rapid rate I was extremely COLD until late evening and normally I am a HOT blooded person  Wink

I used to pass out as a kid when getting blood drawn - so is this just a fancy medical way of saying "fainting"?

My daughter had this happen to her when she had her first "allergy" shot.  She passed out  completely unconscious and hit the floor.  The doctor, who is an environmental allergist said that it is completely normal type of fainting(your above definition seems accurate) and that you would improve the rest of the day. I hope this experience helps you a little. It seems to me it is the most common of the "faintings" .

Yes.  This happens to me a lot and always has.  I've had tons of heart and brain tests done because of my frequent fainting with the final conclusion being that my body just reacts this way to stimulus that is 'normal' for other people.  Once in the hospital they took my blood pressure right after I fainted and it was 70/30.  I don't know... it just happens to me.  Yours sounds the same....

Vasovagal syncope is when the blood vessels in the legs dilate suddenly.  This causes the blood to pool in the legs and there is a lessened flow to the head which causes dizziness and sometimes fainting.

There are a couple of things that you can do to help prevent this.  The first is to make sure that you are not dehydrated.  Avoiding caffeine is a good idea since it is a diuretic and can increase dehydration in cases like this.

Another is to learn to recognize the symptoms of an episode.  Many people get a flash or a darkness preceeding the event.  They may even get a ringing in their ears.  When this happens, change position.  Lie down if possible with the legs elevated.  If you can't lie down at least sit down and make sure you are stable.

Another thing that you can do is blow breathing.  This is where you take deep breaths and then blow them out hard through the mouth (a doctor told me this one).  That forces blood flow and can possibly help you avoid fainting.

Hope this helps.

Cayenne- in tincture form- is also good for fainting.  It gets everything circulating so that the blood can get to your head.

Taking cayenne is also great for a lot of things- circulation being one- and would likely help to avoid fainting.

Everyone is different I know... but I've always found caffeine helpful with my fainting issues. Usually, if I'm starting to feel like I could faint, if I can get a cup of coffee quick I won't faint.  I always assumed that it was because the caffeine constricts the blood vessels and prevents the pooling which causes the blood pressure drop.   Undecided

I can't believe I didn't think to mention this, I learned about cayenne from here and started taking it (in glasses of water every day) a few months ago and haven't fainted since.

thank you so much...
I was laying on an elevated table and I was feeling good....but after what seemed like a prolonged time with the poking and tugging I started to feel nauseous and a buzzing in my head - I naturally felt like drawing up my knees and I did, told them how I felt and she had gone to get the basin and to turn a fan on - the coolness started to relieve me but things were too far gone I think....I also was not as hydrated as I could've been....and the rest of the day my legs felt like rubberbands.....

very interesting!
