  Phlegm in husband's chest
« on: July 19, 2009, 06:37:32 AM » by honeyB
My husband has been coughing up phlegm for a while now. Does anyone know of any at home remedies I could make for him? He was drinking hot thyme water, but we just don't have enough of it for him to do that every day. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know!

I've never tried it, but I've heard that lobelia is really great at expelling gunk from your lungs. You could look into it. Or maybe try an onion on his chest. Basically, you just cut an onion in half, bake it until it is hot and kind of wilted. Wrap it in towel and place on chest. This should help to break up any mucus. Hope that helps, and he feels better soon! Take care!

Mullein, Mullein, and MORE Mullein!!  Tea or poultice on chest.  You can also drink mullein tea and do a raw onion, or dry mustard poultice.  Both have worked on my children and hubby.

For mucus associated with tight-chest congestion...

My DH will not do herbs except in capsules, so we have used both mullein and lobelia in capsules. I don't quite remember for certain, but I seem to remember lobelia being more potent/effective than mullein, and it was a last resort. Actually, I think it caused vomiting, too, which helps the mucus to be expelled from the body, so peppermint tea is recommended for muscle relaxation/spasms. (From http://www.herballegacy.com/Asthma.html, see "Testimonials".) Use moderation, of course.

Another thing that seemed rather effective for us was putting drops of tea tree oil and peppermint oil eucalyptus oil in a mug of very hot water for him to inhale. It always seemed to get things moving--resulted in coughing and then a substantial amount of mucus would be expelled.

We also use GSE in capsules, around the clock, to kill off any potential virus/bacteria.

(Edited to say "eucalyptus oil" instead of peppermint.)

You could try going off dairy.  Hard, yes, but truly dairy products can cause excess mucus very easily.  I think a two week to one month trial would be enough to see if that is the culprit.  We have experienced a worsening of mucus before it cleared up when we did that.

But in the meantime, I think the mullein is a good idea, too. Smiley  Inhaling steam (with caution) that has EO of eucalyptus or peppermint is another good relief remedy that we have used for chest congestion.  I understand with lobelia you may have to be careful for symptoms of overdose (it can clear out the bowel quite well I have heard).

I diddo the dairy....  I was going to reply with the same suggestion.  I had the same issue for a long time and finally went to the dr. and did all kinds of tests.  He never mentioned dairy.  It just so happened one of our kids had eczema so we pretty much eliminated dairy b/c of him and all my problems disappeared!  My husband bought ice cream the other day and I have been very bad and guess what!  I'm hacking all day long.  I need more will power!

Thank you all!! I've got some experimenting to do Smiley. We have a feeling that it might be allergies. We're living in Germany right now, and the part that we're in is TERRIBLE for that sort of thing. I've had them worse than any other year. But we're hitting mid-summer, so it's a little better for us both now. I know that dairy products play a big part in my allergies, so I will see how he feels about that Wink. Since we're in a small town in Germany, I don't have a whole lot of resources for herbs, etc. Does anyone know of the best website I could order from?

If it's allergy related, I highly recommend a vitamin C flush.  You basically max out your body with vitamin C in one day.  You take enough so that your poop is clear.

Keep taking high doses of vitamin C for about a month and add pure MSM to that.

I second going off dairy at least while he's coughing.  I also second the mullein and lobelia.
