  Diagnose my weight gain PLEASE!
« on: August 24, 2009, 09:45:15 PM » by Kristin_19_78
Okay...let's go back to 11-2008. I was 28 years old, weighed 130 lbs, had clear skin and went in for minor surgery.
12-07 weighed 129, had normal periods, turned 29, clear skin, felt great and looked great, with the exception of my soon to be exhusband getting kicked out of my house for abusing the kids and doing drugs.
1-08 had a weird 9 day HEAVY period. Everything else still good.
2-08 didn't have a period....hmmm.
3-08 got  my period and it lasted 11 DAYS!!! Gained five lbs.
4-08 went to Bangladesh. Sex drive went through the roof!! Finally! A normal period! Ate some 3rd world country Taco Bell and got VERY sick...severe cramping and diarrhea for THREE weeks!
5-08 to 7-08...acne, gained another 10 lbs, periods are normal.
7-08 to 11-08...another five lbs...bring the grand total to 20 lbs!!! and my skin looks the way it did when I was 15.
11-08-now...fluctuate between 145-155 on a daily basis. Have tried exercise, diet, eating more (not a big eater and I know I unintentionally starve myself) water pills, ect and I CANNOT LOSE THE WEIGHT!
I take reasonable care of myself...but what I really want to know is: How did this happen so fast and why can't I make it go away?
I thought maybe candida, but I have No sweet cravings.
Adrenal fatigue??? Maybe, but treatment seems aawefully expensive for ALL of the supplements.
Pls don't say age...I have heard it enough. the whole "ha ha. You're 30 now." Thanks.

i am not as active as I should be, but I never was. And when I was working out for two months I say NO WEIGHT LOSS! NONE! I was doing a 1/2 hour of brisk inclined walking/ jogging and light weights.

I have cut out red meat. I don't eat junk. I eat all popultry and fish, rice whole grains, I am a fruit and veggie junkie. I drink ALOT of water. I stay away from most dairy. I take vitamins...

Any ideas or suggestions??? Help. This is going on two years now. At first, when I saw the 1st five lbs, I was like whatever. It's just bc I have had some weird cycles. I increased my water and paid closer attention to my diet...and instead of it going away like normal, it just kept increasing!

Sounds to me like hormonal issues, I'd check out some of the hormone threads. Smiley

Well, eating and exercise increase the metabolism...so you could be creating a very efficient slllloooowwww metabolism if you're not eating frequently or enough, or staying active.

Also, check out the threads on xenoestrogens: http://www.welltellme.com/discuss/index.php/topic,19848.0.html and phytoestrogens: http://www.welltellme.com/discuss/index.php/topic,19847.0.html
If your estrogen levels are artificially raised, then you'll throw off the delicate balance that keeps your cycle on track, as well as have a REALLY hard time losing weight.  Soy, often thought to be a healthy alternative to dairy and meat, is known to have estrogenic effects, as well as many other common foods/herbs/beverages.

Well it sounds like it has been a very stressful time and if your adrenals are fatigued and not kicking out enough cortisol then your body will steal other hormones (one being progesterone) to deal with the stress thus throwing them out of whack and causing many of the symptoms you described. So I would either get that checked or work on de-stressing as much as possible. At least, that is one theory.  Wink I hope you find an answer!  Smiley

OH MY GOODNESS!! You sound totally like me!!  Wink

Ok, not exactly, but very close!  Roll Eyes

I am 25. After the birth of my 3 child, I got very skinny, very fast. As soon as I stopped breastfeeding... gained 5 pounds. Went on vacation, gained another 5 pounds. Then another 10 unexpectedly.

For the last year and a half, I have tried pretty much EVERYTHING!!! Pretty much ALL the diets you can imagine! All sorts of different exercises.... Diets that most people lose 9 pounds on in 11 days.. I barely lost 3 or 4 and gained them back within a few hours.

WHAT IS GOING ON WITH ME!!!??? This is VERY annoying!

I have been wondering if it has anything to do with hormones. I do seem to believe that my adrenals aren't working very well... Could that be it? What would be the 1st steps to fixing the problems?? ANY suggestions??

My mom said that on her side of my genetics, everyone seems to literally just blow up and become REALLY fat at the age of 25 and none of them can lose weight!  Shocked They have lots of health problems, and i think hormonal issues too...

HELP!!

I like T-Tapp for hormone control and weight loss. That is an exercise I feel like everyone should be doing. I wrote about my experience with it in my blog http://herbsareeasy.blogspot.com/ They are also very good about talking to you over the phone and helping you figure out your problems.

As far as other problems go, I always like to sit down every day and write down every things I eat, drink, supplements I take, exercise, sleep patterns etc. That gives me a good overview and easier to spot inconsistencies and possible problems.

I recently took a supplement for adrenal fatigue I used the Gaia herbs brand, it is called Adrenal Health. I bought it at T-Tapp but there are other places to buy it, I think they have that brand at Whole Foods market as well. It worked for me. My emotions were in much better check after using it and I didn't even finish the bottle because I had to go on an elimination diet for my nursing baby.

I have always liked their liquid caps because they just plain work. I have much better results with Gaia herbs liquid caps than capsules with dried herbs enclosed; those never made any noticeable difference for me. Typically $20 a bottle, so worth it IMO.

I was at a Weston Price gathering in June and heard this  guy speak!   He really has done his research to help people lose weight and it works!   Check out his website, and I have his  book and it's well worth the price.  Exercise is not even necessary to lose weight!  http://www.liberationdiet.com/

No it isn't but muscle sure does make it easier to take the weight off, more of it than without exercise, and keep it off. Exercise is necessary for health.

Interesting stuff on that site, from what I have read so far. The thing about soy lecithin is icky...sad to see that is in my Beeyoutiful vitamins.

I like T-Tapp for hormone control and weight loss.

I have ttapp and I really like it too.. for my back at least. But it has done NOTHING for my weight loss. I have done tons of it, all different kinds of their dvds, different bootcamps, the whole works. Did NOT lose even a SINGLE inch off of ANYWHERE!!!!!  Shocked

Can you see why I am so frustrated??  Huh Is it possible that if I start taking that adrenal tincture that I might lose weight?  Wink

It is liquid caps. It can help if that is indeed what is making it harder for you to lose the weight. For me it mainly took away a lot of stress and made me feel more emotionally balanced. The little thing would set me off before, crying or mad. It was just really awful. I had bad, constant, stress for an extended amount of time. It isn't a magic weight loss pill or anything like that. Not like what some of those TV ads may have one believe about adrenal gland type pills.

There are lots of things to look at though with T-Tapp in particular, your form is important with T-Tapp. Not overtraining. Drinking enough water.

I know for me, I can do a lot of T-Tapp and while she says you don't have to change your diet I can't eat the way I was and still lose weight no matter how much I T-Tapp. I needed more water and less sugar. I needed to find the eating habits that worked with me as well. although, even with the bad eating habits T-Tapp kept me from ballooning up, didn't gain anything and my loss is slower the worse my eating habits are.

If you are struggling with T-Tapp I highly recommend posting your questions on the T-Tapp forums and calling the  office as well. Everyone there is so ready to help. Have you read the thread "Why am I not losing?" (something to that effect). Very helpful. And always check those form tips.

I"m having this same problem.  In 2005, my weight fluctuated between 125 and 130 no matter what I did or what I ate.  I got pregnant in December of 2005, and ever since my daughter was born I've weighed around 160.  I'm thinking possible hormonal issues too... I made a wild yam cream last week and have just started using it, hoping that will help (in conjunction with my normal healthy diet and good water intake).  If I see a change in my weight after being on the wild yam cream for awhile and getting my hormones balanced I'll post it here.

Anyone come up with anything new??

How do I know if it is hormones, or adrenals, or thyroid that is making it difficult for me to lose weight??

My understanding (and now gaining experience) is that all three - hormones, adrenals, and thyroid are so interconnected that if one is imbalanced the others will be too. You have to support all three "systems" at once in small baby steps or risk pushing one or the other even farther out of balance. For example, working on just adrenal function will suppress the thyroid even further. Only hormone supplementation will weaken the adrenals. Ignoring the adrenal fatigue will keep you from really correcting the hormones and thyroid problems.

I suggest learning about iodine supplementation and how to use it. The book  to read Iodine: Why you need it, why you can't live without it by David Brownstein.

A great book for learning more about progesterone and female hormone balance is What your doctor may not tell you about pre-menopause by John Lee. You gals in your upper twenties and early thirties and the challenges you are describing in this thread are what this book is all about! If you use prog cream without a doctor's oversight I suggest starting with 1/6 the dosage and work your way up month by month. You can worsen symptoms by using to much too soon before your body has receptors to use that much prog.

I don't have a specific book for adrenal help.
