  possible eczema? help!
« on: August 26, 2009, 05:20:03 PM » by milli249
My 6 month old started getting a little rash around his mouth about 6 weeks ago.  It happened to coincide with me being on antibiotics with an infected tooth.
It started around the mouth and has spread up and around his face, and I noticed a patch on his arm last night.
A Dr friend said it was eczema and to put lotion on it.
The only food that has been consistent is apples.
Could the antibiotic have contributed to this, and what do I do??  I've read some of the threads but not sure if the remedies i'm finding are good for babies?
THANKS!!!!

I'm assuming you're still nursing him.  Had he started solid foods at all before the rash began?  Had you been giving him juice, or formula?

I do not know the answer to your antibiotics question, but I think that whatever foods or medicines you're ingesting will be passed on to your little one.  And, in that case, I would think that he could develop a yeast infection because of the antibiotic.  But that is only a guess.  If that is the case, I would recommend giving him a little probiotic powder a couple times a day to help rebuild the good bacteria in his body.  Just break open a capsule and put a little of the powder inside his mouth.

If it is definitely eczema then it very likely is food allergies.

If it is only related to the anti-biotics then probably just a yeast thing. Seems like a very strong reaction for that though. Especially if a doc said it is eczema. Take a look at some eczema photos on the internet, you will find many different looking things but probably be able to find one that looks like your baby's rash.

Only lotion won't cut it. My baby boy has eczema and nothing worked until I went on an elimination diet for him. He is completely cleared up as long as I don't eat anything he is allergic to.

this is so hard because none of us have food allergies, so I never expected to have a problem.
I had started giving him organic applesauce....we skipped cereal b/c of a few things I had read and decided to just hit the other stuff.  He was VERY ready for food and I couldn't keep him away from ours.
I guess i'll have to figure out what to start cutting out.
thanks!!!

you know...I have been using johnson's baby soap on his face lately---could that be doing it?  I just realized that!

Could be, surely isn't helping. All natural soap would be the best option, and one with very few mild ingredients.

I also have to use vinegar in the rinse cycle for the clothes to get out all the soap residue.

If the rash coincided with the antibiotics, my first thought would actually be Candida... Do you have symptoms of Candida?
