baby refuses bottle & tippy cup
« on: September 12, 2009, 10:36:51 PM » by H0MEFree

This is my fourth child and have never had this issue before.

My son will be 1 year old this next week. He still nurses 3 times a night and several times a day. He will use a pacifier with no issues. He will eat by self feeding only- like cheerios, cheese, beans and things.

Every time we try to give him a bottle or sippy cup, he cries or throws it. We have tried breast milk, formula, almond milk and rice milk.
He is SO offended if I am the one trying to give it to him. I mean really affronted.  Roll Eyes
We know to have dad give it a try and not have me anywhere near him and not where he can see, hear or smell me. It does not matter.

I'd appreciate some new ideas. Some ideas that are off the beaten track (seriously) because all the normal things are not working.

Sounds like you've got a stubborn little man there! Grin

My daughter loves to drink out of our glasses.  Maybe offer him a drink from what you are drinking just to get him used to the idea.  My toddler also likes to drink from a straw (from my cup).  Maybe the straw could be a transition into the straw sippies.  I'm just thinking he may be rejecting 'baby' stuff, but might take to 'big kid' and stolen sips from Mama's cup...especially if it's a smoothie or something yummy!  Wink

Today I bought a sippy cup with the flip straw like you said. He sure like chewing on the straw! There is a spill proof little "valve" inside the straw to prevent spills- and as it appears he has not figured out how to use a straw yet, we may cut out the valve somehow so the liquid will drain through if tipped. Just to encourage him until he figures it out and learns to love drinking on his own.
We will see!

You can train him out of your cup with a regular straw.  I would suck it all the way up, then put my finger on the end, and hold it up over her mouth and let if fall in...that way she associated the straw with a drink.  Then I would fill the straw, seal the end w/ my finger and slip it into my little girls mouth.  She start sucking on it to get the liquid to come back up.  It took us a few tries, but she finally got it, and has LOVED drinking out of straws ever since.

My 14 month old DS doesn't drink much besides mama's milk straight from the breast.  But what he does drink (maybe 1 ounce of water a day simply because he thinks it's a hoot to play with my water bottle, plus a couple ounces of smoothie a day) he pretty much just drinks the same way I would.  I figure there's no reason to introduce a separate kind of cup if it's not necessary.  With the smoothie, I use a small glass and always have my hand on the glass so that he doesn't tip it too much at once and make a huge mess.  But he thinks it's fun to drink out of my water bottle on his own - he has seen me do it so many times that he knows how to hold it and tip it just by watching.  I usually get almost to the bottom and then let him "play" with the little bit that's left over.  He swallows some, chokes on some, and spills some on his belly, but he always does it with a smile.  Of course, I don't really need to give him liquids because he drinks so much breast milk.  I'm not sure what I would do if I were specifically trying to make him drink liquids for hydration purposes, though.  Undecided

These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart.  You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.  -Deuteronomy 6:6-7
