Target carries Method which is a natural, non-toxic cleaning line.  They don't list ingredients on the bottle, which is the only complaint I have.  I was a Melaleuca customer, but have since switched to vinegar and baking soda for everything, except my shower, which I tried the Method tub and tile cleaner on.  It works really great, and they do have a daily shower cleaner that might be worth a shot.

ditto - have you read Clean Home, Clean Planet.  I got it through inter library loan & I would like to eventually get my own copy.  The author uses vinegar, baking soda, borax, essential oils, glycerin, liquid castille soap & hand dishwashing liquid for almost all the recipes.  I liked it because you didn't have to keep a bunch of difficult to find ingredients mostly things that you would already have on hand or at your local grocer/ discount store (so nice for us country folk Smiley.  I do still keep Melaleuca daily shower cleaner because dh swears by it keeping his athletes foot under control!

Don Aslett's cleaning center has good quality spray bottles for $2.25 ea or $2.05 if you buy 3 or more. The web site is: www.cleanreport.com

Read Is There Life After Housework? by Don Aslett if you haven't yet. It has so much good advise on making cleaning easier & on working smarter, not harder. The book he wrote with his daughter, Make Your House Do the Housework is good too.

We use Citra-Solv orange cleaner a lot. I get it at the HFS.

Here's the recipe for a cleaner concentrate that we make a lot. This is a CONCENTRATE make sure you dilute it before you use it. You can use different ess. oils depending on what you have & what you want to do w/it. Made with Tea Tree oil it will get mildew stains out of clothes (shed leaked Tongue) & as a laundry pre spot for really greasy clothes. Tea Tree tends to be over harvested, don't use it if you can use something else. I buy the 4oz bottles of NOW brand for this. Made with eucalyptus it works as a insect repellent , with eucalyptus or citrus it works for cleaning & as a laundry pre spot, I like to add a some peppermint oil when I make it w/eucalyptus for cleaning, it takes the harsh edge off the smell of the eucalyptus. I buy the Vodka in 1/2 gal for $10 just for making this & I just mix the concentrate in an empty Vodka bottle. If you do this, MAKE SURE that no one will accidentally drink it, some ess. oils & liquid soaps are clear, just like Vodka. Watch what kind of bottle you put it in, I once put a tea tree concentrate in a soft plastic bottle & it caused the outside of the bottle to bubble after a while.

To make a spray mix: 1 part ess. oil; 3 parts vodka; 1 part liquid soap (we use Bio-kleen degreaser or 7th Generation dish soap- neither one bothers us) this makes a concentrate. It will separate but just shake before you use it. To use mix 3 tbsp concentrate with one qt. water. Shake before each use.  HTH Blessings ~herbalmom

WARNING This came up long after I posted this but based on this I realized that I should include a warning with my posts about the ess oil/vodka cleaner

YIKES!!!!! As in your painted ceiling? What ANY ess oil can do if it dries on/into paint is to REMOVE THE PAINT.  Shocked Shocked Shocked Ess oils are SOLVENTS- some much stronger solvents than others (citrus, tea tree, eucalyptus, oregano, thyme, clove, etc are the strongest) but ANY ess oil can remove paint, wood finishes, etc if strong enough or if it sits long enough.

We have even used the water/vodka/ess oil mixture to loosen old floor tile that had a petroleum based adhesive under it & I use it to get oil, other auto fluids & road grime out etc out of DH's work clothes all the time. There is also at least one commercial brand of paint thinner that's made from citrus ess oil.

Ess oils can dissolve plastics, rubber, etc as well.

I've posted before & it's commonly warned both on the 'net & in books about ess oils that they can damage paint, wood finishes, plastics, rubber, etc so it never occurred to me that someone might use it to spray on a painted surface & let dry.  Shocked Shocked

IAfter the cleaning, I sprayed with the vodka/ess. oil/soap mixture and let dry.  We'll see what happens.

I read Organic Housekeeping - which talks about using Hydrogen peroxide to clean. Then I saw a show of Martha Stewart's that was devoted to healthy cleaning products.  Some of the ideas were:
1. Make a paste using vinegar and baking soda to scrub your sink, tub, etc.
2. Put Club Soda in a spray bottle and use on your windows, mirrors, faucets
(this REALLY works)
3. For a porcelain kitchen sink, pour baking soda in the bottle, spray with lemon juice, let sit and then scrub clean to remove stains (this also REALLY wors)
4. Use vinegar to wash your floors

By using baking soda and vinegar to shampoo my hair, and going back to making my own laundry soap, along with making my own cleaners, I have really cut back my household budget.  And these things work just as good as other cleaners.  Melaleuca was easier, but I couldn't keep up with the points.

I hope this is the right thread for me to post in, if not, please direct me elsewhere.
I use mostly vinegar and bs to clean, with very few exceptions.  I bought Howard Naturals  www.howardnaturals.com
wood cleaner and polish cause I was looking for a natural alternative to pledge.  I dust at least twice a week.  Anyway, whenever I use it, the smell immediately makes me get lightheaded and nauseaus and dizzy and headachy.  It is awful.  So bad that the smell that lingers in the room for a day or so bothers me. (ive only used it 3 times, I wanted to see if it was actually bothering me, it does it every time)
Here are the ingredients:
soybean oil, coconut oil, palm kernal oil, emulsifier(vegetable-derived), essential fragrances, water
The scent on the front label says Sandalwood-tangerine.
So,
-any ideas on what in there is bothering me
-and any suggestions for what to use other than this, or those spray cans of pledge

Probably the scent. DH, kids & I are all chemically sensitive & a lot of "natural" scents bother us. Your symptoms are the same thing that happens to us. Notice that the ingredients say "essential fragrances" NOT "essential oils". As far as what to dust with, a damp terry cloth cleaning cloth works well & doesn't leave a film to attract more dust. If you switch to damp dusting & you have been using Pledge or something like it, you may find that the film Pledge leaves smears when you use a damp cloth. If so, you will need to was the Pledge residue off with some kind of soap based cleaner. Better Basics For the Home by Anne Berthold-Bond is a really good book for ALL KINDS of recipes for household products. HTH Blessings ~herbalmom

I second what HealthyinOhio said about Bio Kleen Degreaser, we use it all the time & really like it.

I have a self cleaning oven so I haven't tried this but the author of Better Basics For the Home says that it has never failed her.

From the book:

"Sprinkle the bottom of the oven with baking soda to cover. Spray with water till very damp, & keep moist by spraying every few hours. Let set overnight. In the morning, simply scoop out the baking soda- all the grime will be loosened- & rinse the oven well. Baking soda needs a lot of rinsing, but it is well worth the effort because it produces no toxic fumes.

Variation
Washing soda for tough jobs: Substitute half washing soda for half the baking soda. Washing soda is a little more heavy-duty than baking soda, but it needs more rinsing, so bring it out just for the really tough jobs."

My .02:

These directions only seem to cover the bottom of the oven but we all now that the whole thing needs cleaning so here is my shorthand version:

Make a thick paste of baking soda & water or for really tough jobs 1/2 baking soda with 1/2 washing soda & water. Apply paste to oven. Keep from drying out by spaying w/water every now & then. Let set several hours or overnight. Scoop out paste & rinse VERY well, washing soda mix will take more rinsing than straight baking soda.

Which ever way you look at it, I hope it helps. Blessings ~herbalmom

I've heard of them and used some of the stuff.  My sister-in-law's family is ga-ga for the stuff.  My hubby bought their laundry ball before I was with him and so I still use it along with my homemade soap.  I did put it in my chicken's drinking water and they seemed to prefer the water with it than without.  It seems kind-of hokey to me but I doubt it's harmful.  I guess the guy claims he got a vision from God on how to create the stuff.  I'm not one to say that something is or isn't true, but I'm not sure.

Okay, I've recently started wiping down my bathrooms every morning, well almost - good for me, huh! I've also recently switched to vinegar to spray them down with, sometimes mixed with other things - tea tree oil, rubbing alcohol - I'm experimenting. We've also recently entered  Shocked ant season  Tongue. The phenomenon that is occuring at my house is that there are ants all over the bathrooms! I cut out everything except the vinegar in my most recent spray bottle. It's strange because they have never chosen to go in the bathrooms at all till now, and the bathrooms are the cleanest and most consistently clean they've ever been! Do you think they are attracted to the vinegar?

Julia,
We are having the same problem, but I think that it is because we are having an extremely dry year and the little guys are looking for water.  But that is just our experience with it.

I just recently read that anise will repel just about any critter (mosquitos, flies, ants, etc).  I'm going to try that this year.

Also, for more cleaning products try www.aromalogics.com
This is where I get mine and they work wonderfully.  I especially like the carpet deodorizers.  It's all plant-based and essential oils.  (They usually sneak in free stuff to your order too!)

diggin this one up cos i am getting ready to take the vinegar as a cleaner plunge. i found this website Care2.com with this quote
"Heinz company spokesperson Michael Mullen references numerous studies to show that a straight 5 percent solution of vinegar—such as you can buy in the supermarket—kills 99 percent of bacteria, 82 percent of mold, and 80 percent of germs (viruses). He noted that Heinz can't claim on their packaging that vinegar is a disinfectant since the company has not registered it as a pesticide with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). However, it seems to be common knowledge in the industry that vinegar is powerfully antibacterial. Even the CBS news show 48 Hours had a special last December with Heloise reporting on tests from The Good Housekeeping Institute that showed this."
interesting... anyone all ready know this? i was wondering about the germies in the toilet and on unclean hands on the sinks.

i know it was also mentioned that GSE added is good for disinfecting the toilet and whatelse?

reading through other threads i think i am just slow to learn things!! hahaha...y'all is SMART!!

I just wanted to post a cleaner that I regularly use in my home.  I mix 2cups distilled water  about 20 drops of lemongrass essential oil, and 30 drops of grapefruit seed extract.   I use this for an all purpose cleaner throughout the house and because of the GSE it kills all the bad guys, but is completely safe.  I usually wipe with those magic erase sponges b/c no chemicals and the results are shiny and smell wonderfull!  Also a great potpourri I have found is the McCormick brand pickling spice at wal-mart.  I just put some of this in a simmering pot and the house smells spicy and cozy in a very short time.  With this you don't have to worry about polluting your lungs with all the chemicals in air freshening sprays and candles.

As far as I can gather, vinegar does have some antibacterial properties but leaves some bacteria. Which this isn't necessarily bad because we need some bacteria to build resistance.  I mainly concocted this formula because the smell of vinegar is so nauseating to me Tongue

Also I discovered that anise essential oil is good for keeping ants at bay.  They hate the smell of anise and they retreat from it.  This has helped this season in my house.  The ants started appearing 3 wks ago and I started using anise oil and distilled water and  haven't seen any since!

For the benefits of vinegar you might want to check out this website:

http://www.frugalfun.com/vinegar.html

As for the anise oil, do you think just regular anise spice will work, I have some of that in my cupboard, but not any of the oil?   Anyone know.  I have tried cayenne pepper for ants, but unsuccesfully.  I have heard to mix borax with sugar....but am afraid my little one might ingest it (I guess I could search for a place where he wont find it).  Just curious.  My ants came out in FEBRUARY.......it was in the 30's?Huh??....they did disappear with this new cold spell, but I am unsure how long that will last.  Thanks

We live in the desert - ants galore! All sorts of nasty little ants. The best thing I have tried is peppermint oil mixed with water in a spray bottle. We spray it just about everywhere liberally. We've started doing it preventatively, too. Kid safe and forwhatever reason they hate it. Whole Foods has a display board dedicated to this. Another thing we have used is brown sugar mixed 50/50 with yeast - put about a heaping tablespoon on an index card and put it where they will come and feast on it. Best wishes!

I just read an article that said aspartame would kill ants.  We have a horrible problem with ants, so I'm just waiting on this cool weather to clear and they come back out so I can try it.  I bought some Equal last week. Hopefully it will work.  A box of 50 packets of Equal was only about $2., so if it works I'll be thrilled.  I've been battling ants coming into our house for years and nothing natural I've tried has stopped them.

for ants in the yard and drive we use boiling water. i'll use a big pot and pour water on the mound a few times per day for 3-7 days. they don't like it much. it kills alot of them, but what i notice most is the mounds move further and further away and smaller and smaller as the season goes on and eventually they've moved to the neighbors. now on my porch i use powdered cinnamon. and the sugar ants in our bathroom (what are they after in there Huh they're only 2 ft away from my kitchen) i just spray rubbing alcohol/water mix or vinegar/water mix everyday and clean clean clean. ok so i don't really know what to do about them but they are a bit cute. and what is a sugar ant going to do anyway  Tongue as long as they stay out of the kitchen that is.

Before I learned about the all natural stuff, I had an exterminator tell me(because I too had the"what is it about the bathroom?" question), that the ants love the sweeteners in toothpaste and OTC liquid pain meds and antihistamines.  Who knew?

Okay all you cleaning experts! I really need to clean my carpets and I'm wondering how I can clean them without using that strong chemical stuff they usually sell you to put in the machines. I was thinking maybe a laundry detergent sort of mixture but not sure exactly what to put in it.

Borax?  Supposed to be good for cleaning carpets
Soap?   Maybe some natural dish soap, to actually get the dirt off, but I don't want too much as I've heard it will attract more dirt.
Washing Soda/Baking Soda? Good all around cleaner/deodorizers but might make the carpet stiff and yucky feeling
Vinegar?  For disinfecting, but probably no good if I use it with the baking soda as they will react and form NaCl - salt & water. Also might stink.
GSE? To disinfect
Essential Oil? To add a nice smell

I'm afraid the wrong mixture will clog up the machine, too.

What do you all use? If you clean your carpets, maybe you are cleaner than us and they don't get so dirty for you.

What do you all use? If you clean your carpets, maybe you are cleaner than us and they don't get so dirty for you.

We either use the Citra Solve cleaner mentioned in the post below or we make the cleaner in the post below. The way we use it is to get a sprayer- like the kind you use for weed killer- you get them at the hardware store- & make up the cleaner & use the sprayer to apply it to the carpet, more in the bad spots. Some carpet cleaners have a setting where you can apply the cleaner without vacuuming it up at the same time- if yours does that setting works even better than the sprayer because it gets the cleaner deeper into the carpet. If you haven't gotten the carpet cleaner yet we find the ones at Home Depot work well & have the different settings. Let the cleaner sit on the carpet for a while to break up the dirt & oil then use JUST the extraction setting to remove as much of the solution as possible. Go slow & give the machine time to REALLY pull it up from deep in the carpet. Depending on your carpet & how much you wet it down letting it sit for 1/2 an hour or so will give the solution from the bottom of the carpet that the machine didn't all pull up (& no machine will get it all) time to wick up to the top of the carpet & another pass over it on the extract only setting will pull up even more dirty water. You will be amazed at how black this water is. Only AFTER you have pulled out as much of the cleaning solution & dirt as you can rinse the carpet. Put plain water in the cleaning solution tank & use the normal apply/extract at the same time setting that is normally used. You will be surprised at how dirty this water will end up as well. You may have to rinse a few times but it will get your carpet cleaner than any standard carpet cleaning. After your done rinsing going over it one more time with just the vacuum setting will help pull out more water so it dries quicker. The fastest way to get it dry is to put fans on it. Moving air will dry MUCH faster than raising the heat which is what most people do.

If you want to get the carpet really clean this method takes a while & is more work than standard carpet cleaning but it gets it MUCH cleaner than standard carpet cleaning. Only problem with it is that once you see how dirty your carpet REALLY is (& even this method won't get it all but it does get much more than standard carpet cleaning) you won't want carpet anymore. It's GROSS how much gook is in carpet.

BTW- the cleaner does separate- be sure to shake the sprayer every few minutes if your using a sprayer or if you are applying the cleaner with the  carpet cleaner (& that really is the best way to apply it if the carpet cleaner has a apply cleaner only setting) jostle the carpet cleaner forward & back at the end of each row or so (depending on the size of your room- smaller rooms every other row) to agitate the cleaner in the tank to be sure it stays mixed.

One other thing- MAKE SURE YOU WEAR HEARING PROTECTION. Capet cleaners can damage your hearing quickly.
