Garlic oil for ear infections, haven't had the kids to the dr. in years because as soon as they start to complain about an ear ache, I clean out the ears with peroxide then put in a few drops of garlic oil. I continue the garlic oil until healed.

Don't fight fever unless child is in pain or very uncomfortable. Let fever do it's work.

The only thing I wished I knew was about:  The How To Herb Book SOONER! lol  That book was my first about herbs, and I knew absolutely ZILCH about them.  I mean, I grew up in the city, never gardened, probably knew what a dandelion was, and that was about it! lol
The book teaches you all the basics that you need to get started on.  Even has a chapter just for babies:  ear infections, teething, giving them enemas, etc.
That boy in your pic is absolutely beautiful, by the way.  Wink

WTM is my best secret!  Grin  Seriously, the ladies and gentlemen here are just fantastic encouragers, and so willing and wise to help you figure things out.

Starting out learning about herbs, nutrition and home remedies can be so daunting.  My tactic was to start with the areas that I knew needed fixing right away.

For us, that was cleaning things out of our diet that didn't need to be there, and educating myself about what we really needed to be eating.
-Cleaning out the bad stuff: MSG, hydrogenated oils, vegetable oils, etc.
-And learning about the good stuff!: Healthy fats, good quality meats and dairy, lots more veggies, and adding in cultured foods like yogurt...The Nourishing Traditions Cookbook is a good place to start, although to go all out with it would be an extreme makeover for moi.  At least it's a starting point to learn which direction to point in, and start making changes.

For tackling herbal knowledge, I LOVE the Bulk Herb Store site: http://www.bulkherbstore.com  They've got lots of great information including current and historic references and uses for each herb in the bulk herb section, *or* you can browse by remedy and find recipes and testimonials.  Plus...it's just *pretty*, so it's a fun site to spend time on.  They've got a great selection of herbs too!

For basic home remedies, I started spending time going through WTM and looking for things that I wanted to know how to treat.  When illness hits, I have a tendancy to get flusterpated, and forget what I know...and I certainly don't want to sit there and wade through 14 pages of 'how to cure a Urinary Tract Infection'.  So I started finding threads on common illnesses that we run into like colds/congestion/ear infections/flu/sore throats/pink eye/poison ivy & bug bites.  I went through one thread at a time, a little each night, copy/pasting the information and recipes that I wanted to remember, and saving each one as a word document.  When I ran across an herb/supplement/oil that I wanted to have on hand, I would order a bit at a time to build up my herbal arsenal, so I would have it on hand when these things came up.

I have used these 'cheat sheets' *SO* many times when we've gotten sick.  It saves me time, and helps me quickly wrap my head around what needs to be done.  I have printed my cheat sheets out, and have them in a notebook for quick reference.  Hopefully, sometime this year, WTM will put up an articles section that you can join to get fast access to these condensed topics, tips and recipes. (crossing fingers!)

So those are my best tips and secrets for making the most of your time/money and covering your bases...little by little, it all adds up, and you'll be amazed at how much you can learn in just a few months.  It's such a thrill to 'cure' your babies and see them blossom with good nutritional care.

My all-time favorite secret: no more UTI's since discovering that Uva Ursi + Goldenseal knocks them right off their feet! I used to get them rather frequently, but  not anymore Smiley.
Some gals on here like the D-Mannose powder, and while we have had success with it, I still like the Uva Ursi much better. Seems to work faster for me, somehow.

I really like the Udo's choice brand.  They have them for different age groups.  they are a bit pricey but very good.
When I can't by those (which is ususally these days) I use Nature's Way Primadopholus (sp?) Kids.  They are really cheap but they seem to work well.  They are chewables and taste so good - like candy really.

My biggest 'secret' is herbal bone broth.  I make chicken broth often and freeze in in ice cube trays.  There is a broth thread on here somewhere.  But to this broth I add immune boosting herbs such as garlic, echinacea, ginsing, rose hips, nettles and whatever else I have.  I just add the dried herbs in after the boil and skim at the begginning and let the whole thing simmer for 24 hours.  After 6 or so hours I take out the bones and break them and put them back in.  The result is a wonderful, thick broth.  We use it 3-5 x's per week and I think it really helps keep us healthy.

I agree with all the above actually!   Wink  I have learned so much here and it is such an encouragement to know there are people here to help.
The biggest thing for me when starting was Super Tonic and just knowing that I actually COULD make tincture and use it without hurting my family----rather, helping them.   It was so wonderful to know I finally could do something without going to the Dr.   Tongue
I love GOOT too.

My favorites are:
yeast is the culprit with most of the issues with health/wellness in today's society
green foods for energy, nutrition
water cure for hydration/ energy
comfrey for salves/healing

I've done herbals for a long while so beforehand is hard to relate to... but one thing I would say is that you shouldn't worry about what everybody else thinks or is doing, or care when they tell you that you are wrong.  It always seems that most everyone will have an opinion or comment on your health, fertility, marriage, and everything that is really none of their concern.  Follow what you know to be true and right, and educate yourself on these matters.

I wish I had known about the Children's Compostition Formula:
http://www.welltellme.com/discuss/index.php/topic,12022.msg113233.html#msg113233

It's stopped a lot of colds in their tracks.

Also, grapefruit peel tea cures lung problems/coughs.  It's the cheapest, easiest remedy I know!

Plantain - I used it in poultice form from dried herb to draw out the poison from a brown recluse spider bite. In two days my little girls leg was all better. Plantain is one of my first learned and favorite herbs.

Elder flower and elder berry tinctures for fevers, cold and flu prevention and treatment, I will not be without this.

Garlic oil- I always put it all over my kids chest, neck, ears, back, and feet during times of illness. They never get infections these days....I'm thinking that has something to do with it. No ear infections! How awesome!

Catnip and Fennel tincture for colic! That is a big one! I then learned that catnip helps them sleep, mild sedative. That was awesome with my third baby.

I wish I had known how so very useful honey, onion, garlic, ginger, thyme and apple cider vinegar were all on their own even as individual treatments.

I recommend learning about everything you already have in your kitchen first and make something with it then you will be well on your way.

I wish I had understood the importance of treating illness immediately and I wish I had known about food allergies sooner.

I like the Nutiva brand from iHerb
http://www.iherb.com/Nutiva-Organic-Extra-Virgin-Coconut-Oil-54-oz-1532-g/7311?at=0

but in a pinch I admit to having used the Louanna brand from walmart that is really not the best stuff.

I have had good sucess with Oregon Grape Root for my children, which is an alternative to Goldenseal.

I ususally use Herbs for Kids Oregan Grape Root in a glycerite, but I would like to be able to make my own Oregan Grape Root glycerine/alcohol tincture for my children.

It really seems to dry up yellowish runny noses, and bacterial viruses.

Goldenseal used to be what everyone went to first for illness, but it was so overused that it became somewhat of an endangered/limited species, I believe.  There has also been more education on echinacea in the recent years to show that it may not be the best for everyone at the first signs of illness.  These both have their places in therapies, but I prefer to save them for when they are specifically recommended, and start with alternatives.
I would recommend the 'Children's formula" which is peppermint, yarrow, and elderflowers for a first line defense in kids.
I also second the recommendation of Oregon grape root as an alternative to golderseal when there is an infectious process occurring.
I've also had some good luck dodging illness so far this season in our family with the use of an elderberry tonic that I made, but Beeyoutiful sells as Berry well.

Mrs B...The Bee Well Syrup recipe looks nice!  I may try to make a glycerite/tincture out of it sometime.   The raw honey and apple cider vinegar make a very nice addition!   I have some of this,  http://www.vitacost.com/YS-Organic-Bee-Farms-Propolis-Extract  which is Propolis in honey.  Could I use the propolis/honey instead of  the honey?

Honestly, I've never personally used propolis, but looking at the info on it, I don't see why you couldn't use it.  I do keep my 'berry' product stored in the fridge, and that along with the vinegar should be adequate preservatives for the season, I hope.... but that would be my only concern.
and you also might want to add some extra liquid in the form of water, tinctures, or vinegar to make up for the loss of the honey, but that would really be a subjective thing as far as the texture goes.

My little girl doesn't like smoothies either, my first couldn't get enough but my other two won't drink them. My son can't have the milk anyway.

How old is your son?

If you feed him good food and good vitamins and whatnot getting him to drink water is best. So many kids don't like water, have to start them young.

The vitamins I use are Beeyoutiful's liquid vitamins but I sell those so that is easy enough for me to do. I think getting a liquid is better than chewables. Maybe someone else can chime in on if there are other good brands of liquid kids vitamins.
