  looking for large homeschooling families
« on: December 23, 2009, 03:05:47 PM » by chrysalyde
Hi,
I hope this is OK to post in the " announcements" board. I know this isn't really related to natural health, but as I know there are a lot of homeschoolers on WTM, I was hoping it might be a way for me to get in contact with some.
As a French student in Science of Education I am doing a research, at a graduate level, on homeschooling. More specifically, I am interested in finding out how large families teach multiple children at different levels. For that purpose, I am looking for large families who are homeschooling and who would be interested in participating in this study. The families should have a minimum of 6 children with at least 4 currently schooled (grades K-12). At the moment, I am visiting in CA (Bay Area) and would love to meet such families (living in the Bay Area or around LA) for an interview.
If you are, or know families who might be interested in helping me out in this project, can you please contact me through PM ?
Thank you so much !

I did similar projects in college.  FUN!
One semester I studied the large family; and the next semester, homeschooling.  The large family project included a lot of research and surveys mailed all over the world.  The homeschooling project required picking a controversial topic within education.  I had a panel of home schooled kids for my final presentation; they (grading committee) gave me high marks!
That was uh, like, uh...17 (cough) years ago.   Wink

My final big research paper in college was on homeschooling.  My teacher LOVED my paper.  I made a 108 on it!!!  Cheesy  I loved that class, that teacher, doing the paper, etc.  It was probably one of my top two favorite classes in college.

Oh, and I went to a secular university.

And I'm not about to say how long ago that was!!!   Roll Eyes Cheesy

Thanks Wyomama and Floydian for your messages ! It' s encouraging to see that homeschooling was well researched that many years ago. It is not the case of France, where homeschooling is still in a pioneering stage. Only two doctorate thesis are being written on the subject, and they are the first, so it is very hard to find any resources to defend homeschooling.

This is why I am bumping this thread, as I'm having trouble getting in contact with large homeschooling families. Studies on homeschooling help make it better known in the university arena and also help homeschooling families defend their educational choices. That is why families willing to participate in such studies are so important and can play a key role in promoting homeschooling.

Thank you so much for your help !

Do you specifically have to interview families that are in that area?  Can you make up a survey of certain questions and send it out to those of us who have larger families?

I think there are several of us that would be willing to help you, but I'm in the South, not in CA.

Hi Floydian,
Yes, unfortunately, I am limited to this area. Surveys are quantity based methods of research, whereas interviews allow for more qualitative and in-depth study, allowing for a smaller corpus. If I were to do a survey, I would need several hundreds of participating families, but when using interviews, I can have a smaller number of families (10-20).

I have, for my last research (on the socialization of homeschooled children), done phone interviews (in fact, a mother on WTM was one of the homeschooling parents I interviewed), but the nature of this research requires me to actually meet and observe the families in a homeschooling context.

I totally understand that there might not be any large homeschooling family in CA on WTM, but my knowledge of homeschooling networks in the US is pretty small, so I would welcome any advice or links to help me find HS families in this area.

I have 6 children, one on the way, and am schooling 5 of them at this time.  My husband is in the US Air Force and we live in Germany and would love for you to come visit us if you are coming back to Europe.  My German neighbors think we are very odd, but I think we are actually able to put large families and homeschool in a different light for some of them.  I would love to see homeschooling become more accepted in Europe (in Germany it is illegal at this point - children are actually removed from their parents).  To be even a small part of that would be a blessing and honor!

Yes Aunt Kittyninja, I'm finally on WTM. Surprise! Oh yeah, and I'm PREGNANT again! Now I'm going to try to find a cure for my sickness. Praise God for babies though!

Sarah,
I don't want to hijack this thead either, but I have a suggestion for morning sickness: SEABAND. They are motion sickness braclets.
I finally tried them this time with my 5th pregnancy. They help some, but are not a miracle cure. Also, munching on almonds seems to help.

GL and congrats... done with my hijack, LOL

If you're still in the US try contacting HSLDA- Home School Legal Defense Association. They are the main US group that helped with the home schooling issue in the French Parliament in 2007.

If you call them they can probably put you in touch with someone in CA that can help you.

Also, here is a link to find HS groups in CA that may be able to help you:
