We're doing some fiddling with the front page.  Don't be alarmed.  When I get what I'm aiming for, I'll let you know and ask for input.   Grin

Okay, I've taken the categories and divided them into sections.  We want your input.

The idea was to take the more time sensitive topics - new arrivals, prayer, diagnosis, announcements and requests for technical assistance at the very top.

All other less time sensitive issues are divided into their respective categories.

Notice in the right corner of each section a '+' and '-'.  These will collapse and expand the section if you wish not to view it.  I believe these settings will remain when you sign out (not sure).

Thumbs down.  Sorry.

The main thing I don't like is having to check through each section for new postings.  Before, anything that had new postings was bumped up to the top.  I could come to the website and scan the first 5ish topics to know if anything posted.  Or if I was looking for something older I could just keep going down.  I don't like having to look in each section for the newest posts.

Sorry.  Maybe it's just me.

No, sections are nice to look up old posts but when I have only a few minutes, I like to see all the newest ones right at the top. One can always do a "bump" if something needs to remain at the top for awhile.

The section thing isn't really working for me, either. Before, I could just do a quick scan for the most recent posts, which was quick and easy to do. Having to go down the page under each section now just seems to take more time, and it seems a little awkward.

Boy, we really don't like change, do we??? Grin

HB, is there a way that you could make it toggle back and forth between the views?  Like a 'Most Recent Post' view that is the old way, and a 'Posts by Catagory' view like you have it now?

My thought is that the Admin/Announcement section being at the top would be confusing for new members who come looking for natural health info.  Also, IMO this section doesn't change as often as some of the others, so a lot of the topics will just sit there at the top unchanged while the more active sections will be limited in space.  So I'm thinking it will make it easy to miss people's questions and stuff.

Maybe if you just did the admin section at the top, and have it closed (minimized) as the default.  Then do the rest of the page as it was.  That would give people the option/reminder of seeing just the updates of the admin section.  But it would be nice to see the prayer requests and new member intros in the normal feed as well.

Just my .02. Wink

Y'all do know that there is a link at the top right-hand side (beside your profile pic) that you can click to see all the new posts since your last visit, don't you? It's "Show Unread". I've been using it for years. Very easy.  Grin

I like several features of the new layout.

1) The time sensitive topics are at the top. This means if there's something urgent, it doesn't get buried beneath general chatter.

2) I don't have to scan through boards which hold no interest to me. I can just collapse those and move on. . . It's not just a jumbled pile of whatever.

3)I like it sorted by boards. To my mind, this makes it easier to see where discussion threads SHOULD go if I want to start one.

4) I don't have to scroll down a LOooong page of entries. As I finish each expanded section, I just collapse it. The page automatically shortens.

NICE!  Cool

I think it's a little clunky myself.  I have some other ideas, but nobody else has any input???  Any parts you DO like?

I like the time sensitive stuff at the top.  It's actually been requested several times, that I do this over the last 4 years.

C'mon any more comments?  Let me have it.  I can take it.   Grin

I'm thinking maybe a combo of old & new- time sens at the top like they are now & the rest in the old format of most recent post on top.

HB,

I agree with you that it seems a bit clunky, but I wonder if that is because of the new format of something we are incredibly familiar and comfortable with.   When I saw/read what was going on, I decided to check in on the forum more often that usual to see if my impression of it changed.  It has; I'm gradually starting to like this.
I like being able to collapse the boards if I choose.
I realize that this may make it easier to find or start a thread in the appropriate board.
I really like having the timely stuff on top.

Thank you, WR, for telling us about the bullet in the upper right box to 'Show unread'!   Smiley  I am finding that this feature really helps me when I check in here.

Great minds think alike.  Wink

I really like the time sens stuff being on top- it makes them much easier to find & it's frustrating to have it drop off the page when it's important that the max # of people see it. I know that I've mentioned before that it would be nice if prayer request could stay on top. It's also nice to have the newest posts at the top. That's why I thought a combo might be the best solution.  Grin Grin

Ok, unless we buy, install and implement a new template, the lines "I drew" are my best option right now.  I just changed some of them to look a bit different.  Be sure and let me know which "line" is the most easily discernible.  Grin

HB,

I'm likin' the ===========  and the ==>==>==>==> , as well as the ................!

Is there any way to have a 'Return to Top of page' feature for the most recent posts within the threads?  Does that make sense?  Like, when I have read the last thing posted on a page in a thread, an option to put me back to the top (to click back to the 'Show unread' button next to my avatar) without scrolling up.

Ok, I'm kinda confused, but trying to figure out the new format. In general, I don't like change.  Tongue  Wink  I was wondering though if you could make the headers bigger and/or bolder? My eye tends to just see the green and skip right over the black, but maybe that's not a bad thing? I don't know. Also I like the ~~~~~~~~~~~ line the best.  Grin

Can you move the "Show Unread" and "Show Replies" links to a more prominent place? Maybe top center of the front page in large bold letters? It doesn't really matter to me what the new layout looks like, **because** I use the "show unread" link and can see any and all new posts with the click of the mouse. SO maybe it would solve the issues some folks seem to be having with the new (or even the old) layout if they too began to use the link.

Not a bad idea WR.  It might be already in the works.

Also, I "think" that notifications are working again, so if you need notify of new topics in your favorite boards, you can get them.

If you didn't already know, you can be notifiied of new topics in every or any board or your choice, you just have to turn in on in each board you like.  Then you'll get an email for each new topic created in that board.

There are several ways to use your notifications for this purpose.  If you want more details, it's all written up over here.

LH,
What I do is click the "WellTellMe" link at the bottom of the page. That takes you to the top of the front page and then you can click the "Show Unread" link again.

Thumbs down here too.  Embarrassed  It just feels all complicated compared to the way it was before.  I know it's still pretty simple, but before it was so unbelievably simple that this small 'organizing' change feels complicated.

Full disclosure: I have been told all my life that I have trouble with change! LOL  Wink

Yeah, same here. It's just kinda weird having them all set up like that, because I'm so used to just looking at the top of the page to see if there is anything to post in.  Just my two cents! Embarrassed

great suggestion and I agree

as someone who has not been on WTM for quite a while I like what I see as I return

I like having the time sens things on top and I, like WR have always been one to use the "show unread" posts....

I have to say I love the ability to close out topics also and I am normally one to truly DISLIKE change

there is my 02 cents
