What is the name of the condition where you don't feel full after eating?
« on: October 28, 2009, 10:19:11 PM » by Becks
I once heard about a condition where folks don't have the sensation of fullness.  What is that condition called?  I want to research it more.

I need to do some researching about a child in my family.

Thanks for helping.

I'm sorry, I don't know the name, but I hope someone can help you with that.  I do know that eating a high carbohydrate diet without enough protein and fat can cause a whole host of problems, the least of which is lack of satiety.

Some who is not eating the right kind of healthy fats will never feel satisfied.  This is why low fat diets don't work.  They only make you more hungry and ravenous.  A diet high in omega 3's and low in omega 6 and 9's should satisfy ones hunger more.
Examples of good high fats:  fish oil, cod liver oil, high fatty fish(salmon, sardines), coconut oil, coconut milk, raw milk, raw milk butter and cheeses, lard, EVOO.
The Healthy Fat Cookbook is a great start.

Prader Willi Syndrome: it's supposed to be genetic.

has anyone ever heard of pyloric stenosis being linked to this feeling of never being full?  Does it even make practical sense?     ~L

The only things I've heard of pyloric stenosis are in infants who are projectile vomitting, and failing to thrive.  In both cases, they had to have corrective surgery.  I don't know of any cases in children who would be old enough to verbalize that they are always hungry.  It doesn't seem to be a fit or a link to me.

I would say digestive/absorption issues would be probably the most common cause behind with constant hunger.  In that case, your nutrition is just exiting the normal route, undigested or unabsorbed...no matter how good the diet is.  Nailing down the cause and cure of digestive issues is a booger though.  There are so many possibilities from allergies to parasites to imbalanced gut flora.  It's almost impossible to diagnose yourself.  I'd do a search for posts by mykidsmom to see how her family has found answers (with Dr. Dramov...I prob. spelled that wrong, but I doubt that spellcheck will help me out there. I just wanted to clarify that although kids with Prader Willi tend to be, um, severely obese, as babies they usually have difficulty/don't want to eat due to hypotonia (low muscle tone).  These kids also have a slow metabolism, which is not such a good problem for these kids.  Wink  Further contributing to their weight issue is the fact that they tend to have a short stature.  Additionally, these kids tend to have a lower IQ and they also tend to have small hand and feet.  And yes, these kids eat everything in sight.  Our local newspaper ran an article on Prader Willi one time and a police officer had actually found a kid in a dumpster eating food that people had thrown away.  Tongue  I don't know if the child you are concerned about was a home birth/didn't get a newborn infant screen shortly after birth, but at least in my state, I think that the newborn metabolic screen will actually detect Prader Willi.  I'm not sure how accurate the test is though.  Anyway, I hope that helps!

They had me on prednisone for over a year (long time ago).  I never felt full.  I have since heard the nickname for prednisone is "A pound a pill".

I think my concerns are unfounded.  I'm glad I found out the name of the condition. Now I know what to keep an eye out for.  My little girl may just have self control issues.  She was a homebirth... my only one, so we didn't get that test your talking about.  Her muscletone and IQ seem ok.  Not sure how I'd test those though.  She was a good nurser as a baby, so that points to having good muscle tone I think.  Numbers and letters are a bit hard for her to grasp, but she's only 3, we've got time.  She's also 3rd born, so not as driven to learn as my first born was.  I'm just trying to be diligent and research and not be in the dark about my kiddos.
Thanks for the help.

Ok, I looked up Prader Willi Syndrome and found a detailed website.... my little one has quite a few but not all of the symptoms.  My plan right now is to wait a while and watch for the eating behaviors to get stronger.  If that happens we'll get her tested.  In the meantime we'll keep training in self control and good eating habits. (If anyone knows where I can look for more help training these characteristics, I'd appreciate it.)  I'm looking for specific training techniques.  We have used To Train Up a Child with much success.  I'm more at the stage of needing help with how to talk about food and work on self control from a positive angle.  We need to stay positive and not draw more attention to the problem by focussing on it too much with her. So these are the challenges regarding any method we use to work with her on this issue.

Concerned mom of a darling little 3 year old.

My niece has Prader Willi Syndrome. She is a young adult now. I've spent quite a bit of time with her since she was born. I'm not an expert on this syndrome but I could try to answer any questions you might have. Smiley

I have seen a dieting method developed for adults with self control issues.  I think it would be very easy and effective to do with a 3 year old.  It was centered around using smallish plates with pictures of food in the serving sizes.  So a bigger green area, a serving sized piece of meat, and a piece of cheese or carb...something like that were pictured on it.  When it's time to eat, you fill in each space with the right kind of food, and voila!  Actually, there are many different styles of dishes, and this site even suggests how to make your own:
http://www.personal-nutrition-guide.com/portion-plates.html#choices

Other ideas: look at a book that shows where the stomach is and what it looks like...show her how much food her stomach can hold (one fist holding the other).  Then you could play kitchen or restraunt with her and use play food to talk about healthy foods and how much a person should eat at a meal.  She could practice serving you and a stuffed animal plates of play food, practicing serving sizes for different sized people...just some thoughts.

Ooh, I like the plate idea.  She's already got a toddler plate with compartments on it.  I could find a way to put pictures on it or around the perimeter to show what goes in each compartment.  I could even get one for each of the other kids too so we are all learning together.  Great idea.

I like the playing house idea too.  Thanks so much.

Sure Becks!

If you do feel that there is an underlying hunger issue, then you could just try giving her a good enzyme supplement with her meal, and see if that makes a difference for her.

This is just reminding me a lot of mykidsmom's posts where her son ate great quality food, but he wasn't actually absorbing much of anything.  There are several other factors that affect feeling full.  Just a thought!

Is your daughter overly chubby for her age...I mean, 3 year olds are supposed to be chubby IMO, but is she having a weight problem or does she just eat more than your other kiddos?  One of mine is a BIG eater during growth spurts...eating as much as dh at times.  And then there are are people like moi who just love food.  Wink

I guess I'm wondering if you feel strongly that there is a problem with your dd, and if so, why (if you don't mind sharing).

I'm on the brink of going out of internet range for a number of weeks, so don't feel I have time to explain it all.  Suffice it to say, my little sweetie fits into many of the diagnostic criteria given on the Prader Willi USA support website.  I'm going to be praying and watching.  It's a relief to know there's a condition out there that explains much of what we've been going through, and yet I don't want her to have a lifelong condition.  One step at a time.  I'm trusting God.

Becks,

Here's some threads that might help- some might seem off topic but they have lots of good info that may apply:

my sons...bottomless pitt

Failure to thrive

Underweight Infants & Toddlers: Healthy Supplements For Weight Gain

ESPECIALLY post 107 in that thread.

Allergies &/or poor gut absorption can cause cravings & binging that you wouldn't believe. I'm an ex smoker & I crave my allergic foods FAR more than I ever craved a cigarette. I can tell you that when I eat dairy &/or gluten I feel like I can't fill up & just want to keep eating. It's not just being hungry though & it's not a craving- it's MUCH more than that. Hard to describe but it easily leads to food sneaking, (being an adult I don't sneak food- but my kids do) binging, gorging & bottomless pit.

I just saw this in Better Homes and Gardens this morning.  Check out www.thinnerware.com.  These look like regular plates with flowers and bowls with cute stripes, but . . . "Cover the large flower on the plate with food and you know you have a 1/2 cup serving.  A small flower's worth of food is 1/4 cup.  The bottom ring in the bowls measures 1/2 cup.  Fill it to the top ring and you have 1 1/2 cups."

Seems like a nice way to be able to learn portion control without the neighbor family who is over for dinner knowing what you're doing.  Cheesy  Albeit a little pricey.

To clarify this, I meant could the surgery as an infant interfere with the sensation of fullness later in life?  I had the surgery as an infant and I don't tend to feel full until I'm STUFFED.    ~L

Interesting question!

This article is sort of interesting because researchers were looking at feelings of fullness based on the physical amount in the stomach + the hormones that work with the brain signals.  They found that they work synergistically.  But they don't know exactly how all this works or why.
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/01/080109112302.htm

It's possible that it could be related if
a) your stomach empties too quickly to register fullness, or
b) they cut a nerve...which I think would cause more noticable problems.

But it appears that what you eat can also positively affect the sense of saiety, according to this article:
Moderate decrease in carbs (more fats) increases feeling of fullness
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/06/090611142405.htm

This article on pyloric stenosis says that there is a link with mothers who took erythromycin later in pregnancy:
http://www.drgreene.com/21_1166.html
I read that it's used for eye drops for newborns.   Shocked
more on erythromycin (including how it's 'safe in pregnancy!!!): http://www.drugs.com/erythromycin.html
