Does anyone have a recipe for Jungle Juice Tincture? Smiley I read somewhere that you can use Vodka to make the tincture itself. Do I just pour the vodka over the herbs and let it sit for a couple of weeks or do I need to add something else?
Jungle Juice Recipe

I believe that vodka will suffice.  I know several people who have tried both vodka and glycerin, but the above recipe seems to use both.

I just made some children's composition formula (from More than Alive) and in the bottom of my jars it seems there is some sort of sediment - thicker and lighter colored than the rest of the tincture.

Please tell me this is ok and not mold or something. I put the glycerine/herb mixture in jars in my crock pot on a Saturday night, and I didn't take them out until Wed. morning. Was that too long?  (a couple busy days distracted me!) I did notice that one of my jars (a salsa jar, not a canning one) had sealed itself in the crock pot. Is that normal or okay?

Thanks!

No - that's just a sediment of the ground herbs in there.  My Jungle Juice has tumeric silt in the bottom.  Since it is just herb, you can even use that  portion of the tincture - though it may taste stronger &/or grittier than the rest of the bottle did.

I put the glycerine/herb mixture in jars in my crock pot on a Saturday night, and I didn't take them out until Wed. morning. Was that too long?  (a couple busy days distracted me!)

Should be fine.  May be stronger than a tincture done only 48 hours or something - but I would feel very safe using it for myself or my family.

I did notice that one of my jars (a salsa jar, not a canning one) had sealed itself in the crock pot. Is that normal or okay?

The sealing of the jar only means that the temperatures inside/outside the jar changed the air pressure and drew the lid down.  Not a big deal.  I would still use it.

OK, I've been making lots of glycerine tinctures this month, and everything was going fine, until yesterday. The water was simmering quietly (no bubbles or anything) when I left, and several hours later, I returned to find it BOILING!!!

This was day 2 out of 3. The jars all look fine, just like normal. Have I ruined my tinctures? I would hate to throw out all that nice tincture (5 quart jars of it! - $$$), but I will if it's going to be harmful or else ineffective. Some of it is for my mom, who was just diagnosed with cancer, so if I'm going to send her something, I want it to really work.

HELP!

Thanks!

Hi Laura,
I did that once with a Sleep Sweet tincture. I think it boiled a couple of hours before I caught it. I went ahead and used it anyway, and found it to be very effective tincture. I may have lost some properties with the overheating, but there were still enough that my tincture was very effective. My herbs had even turned darker with the high heat, but it didn't seem to totally negate their properties.

Was it the water in the crockpot boiling or the actual tincture?
I think that you are meaning the water in the crockpot, but I did just want to make sure...
I would go ahead and use it... I looked this up in several books and couldn't find anything to say otherwise.

It was the water in my pot. I don't have a working crock pot, so I'm using a stock pot over the lowest heat on the stove. I have no idea if the glycerin itself was boiling.

I'm letting it finish simmering a bit more today, but I think I should probably call it done and strain it! Um, when I get a free moment, that is .... all this feeding people around here is getting in the way of my tincturing!  Wink

Thanks.

Thanks Beka,

Whew, I'm feeling better about it now! Going to go strain in and see what it looks like. The tinctures are astragalus and also a mix of RRL, nettles, oat straw. If the astragalus looks dark or weird, I may redo just that one jar.

Gotta run!

OK, I've never done a combined alcohol/glycerin tincture before. Is it really necessary to heat them both up together, or can you just pour them into a jar and mix well?  Huh

I was under the impression you made the vodka tincture the 'cold' way, made the glycerin tincture the 'warm' way, and then poured them both together and was done with it.... just kind of a shake before using thing from there out....  I would think that you really wouldn't want to heat the alcohol.
Anyone else do it different?

I do it the way Mrs. B explained...make them separate and then mix them together. I prefer them mixed because then the tincture isn't so strong tasting but you still get some of the extracting strength of the alcohol.

It is also my impression that the glycerin and vodka extract the properties in different ways so you are mixing them in their tinctured forms so that you get the optimal effects of the herbs as offered by both forms.

LOL - Gabe's been on my computer again!  Cheesy

Ditto to all the above. I don't heat the alcohol tincture... just mix it with the warm glycerite tincture for a good not-too-sweet, not-too-stout brew.   Cheesy The alcohol tincture is made by letting your herbs sit in the vodka for 3 weeks or so (shaking it daily) then it can be strained and added to the glycerine tincture.

The reason I asked is that Beka mentioned her mom heating them in a pressure cooker or something. I can't remember exactly what she said ... it's in the downloadable video and I'd have to watch the whole thing again to find it.

Well, I'm just going to stir them together when the alcohol tinctures are finally done.

Thanks for the input, everyone.  Smiley  For years, I've only done alcohol or vinegar tinctures. The glycerine thing is new to me.

Hi Laura,

Mom puts the pulp of both tinctures (with the liquid wrung out) in the pressure cooker with enough water to cover, and then pressures it for just a few minutes (5 I think) and then strains it and adds it to both brews, as a third, last extraction method.  Smiley

I'm happy with how the tinctures turned out, BTW. I was afraid they'd taste burnt or something. But they're perfect and they taste great! *whew*  Cool

On the black walnut thread, SC posted a recipe by Hulda Clark.  It says it only takes 3 days to make black walnut hull tincture by using the whole, green walnut.  This just doesn't seem to be long enough based on the "3 week" standard I see everywhere else.

Anyone have any thoughts, experience with this?

Personally, I'm going to go find a nice Asian market and get some kelp.  I plan on powdering it in my blender, and adding it to smoothies (if we can stand it) or sneaking it into my homemade chili powder and seasoning salt.  Grin

I got some Kelp powder from Mountain Rose Herbs..... just thought I'd let you know in case it's easier for you to order it than finding an Asian market.

I am needing to get some tinctures made again before winter.   I am wondering if anyone has any thoughts about making tincture from the herbs used in Essiac tea.    Could I make each herb into a tincture then combine them if I needed to use them?   Any thoughts on if this would be an effective way to help with cancer treatment?   Thanks all.

I'm bumping this for an answer and I have another question.
When you use Everclear for tincture do you need to add water because of the higher percentage of alcohol in the Everclear?   Thanks in advance.

I'm not familiar with Essiac tea, but I don't know why you couldn't combine the individually tinctured herbs... just be aware of the dosage of each would be my only advise.

I've used Everclear for tinctures, and I didn't use any water.  I just left it at the higher concentration, but DILUTE it before using or do something to burn off some of the alcohol.  That stuff really burns!   I generally will add hot tea water to it to cut down on the burn.
Dr Shultze actually recommends Everclear over other alcohols for tinctures.  I generally use vodka as my staple as it is just easier to not have to dilute it, and even I (let alone my kids) don't want to use the ones with Everclear without taking an extra step.

Thank you Mrs.B    I usually use Vodka but read that Everclear is better for barks etc.   I will be sure and dilute.

The Clark recipe is different because you are dealing with a nut inside a hull that is a fresh product, not dehydrated/dried as many of the herbs we normally utilize are . . .
Click here for my results and why it might be best to harvest the Black Walnut tincture earlier rather than later . . .

We grew two stevia plants in our garden this summer, and I dried the leaves.  I just finished making two different stevia tinctures--one with vodka and one with glycerine.  I tasted the vodka one, and it was super sweet.  But I've only used the glycerine one so far, and it is not nearly sweet enough.  I have to add multiple droppers full to sweeten a drink, as opposed to a few drops of the store-bought stuff.  I don't know yet how well the vodka one will work.  What can I change next time to make it better?

For the glycerine tincture, I first poured boiling water over the dried stevia leaves, then filled the jar with glycerine.  I put it in a crockpot on the "Keep warm" setting and left it in there for three days, stirring once a day.

Could you tell the ratio of stevia to vodka and glycerine you used?  I also grew stevia this year and have a bunch that I dried and wanted to try a tincture or glycerite, as well.

One part stevia leaves to three parts vodka.  Approximately the same with the glycerine, but I just filled up the jar, so it wasn't exact.  I read on another site that glycerine should be mixed with water 1:1, but I didn't do that.  I followed Debi Pearl's suggestion to put in 1/2 c. boiling water, and top it off with glycerine.

Should I have put it on "low" setting instead of "keep warm?"  The reason I did that was that another website said that some crockpots' "low" settings were too hot, and that "keep warm" was better.  If I had it at a higher temp., would the result have been sweeter?
