Re: stevia glycerite not sweet enough...

Maybe you could do the blend of your vodka and glycerine tinctures and see what you come up with.  I think the alcohol content would steam off if added to a hot beverage.

Possibly, crushing the leaves first would help make the glycerite sweeter, or maybe letting it go a few more days next time.  I don't see how adding more water to the mix would have helped matters.

I am needing to get some tinctures made again before winter.   I am wondering if anyone has any thoughts about making tincture from the herbs used in Essiac tea.    Could I make each herb into a tincture then combine them if I needed to use them?   Any thoughts on if this would be an effective way to help with cancer treatment?   Thanks all.

I'm bumping this for an answer and I have another question.
When you use Everclear for tincture do you need to add water because of the higher percentage of alcohol in the Everclear?   Thanks in advance.
Most people would suggest 50% water.  Everclear is 95% pure alcohol.

Hi everyone... So I made my first echinacea tincture.  I read several different books--most of which said to generally 'put some echinacea in a jar and fill it with alchohol'.  I used Everclear and now I'm reading that the alcohol content may be too strong.  Does this affect the tincture?  Can I add water now to dilute it without losing potency?  I'm assuming that I can still use it...it just has a higher alcohol content than necessary?
Thanks!

I hope someone else will jump in here and correct me if I'm wrong---------I think you need to dilute a bit when you take a tincture made with Everclear.    I'm wondering if putting it in a cup of tea would be diluted enough.HuhHuhHuhHuhHuh  Anyone???

The ones that I've made with everclear are REALLY strong.  I take the same amount/drops of the tincture that I would give in a dose and put it in the bottom of a small mug or cup.  I then add about 1 to 3 tbsps of hot water from the kettle to this. (The alcohol will 'fizzle' so to speak).   I then add a touch of honey and stir.  My kids will even drink this despite the small amount of water, and it doesn't seem too strong or diluted out to me.

Mrs B. do you need to leave it about 10 mins or so? I'm really sensitive to alcohol and I heard that it should be given 10 mins to evaporate completely.

Hey.... Honestly, I don't know about this, but don't know what it wouldn't hurt to give it a try.  If you are sensitive to the alcohol I would really try to use vodka or a glycerine/vodka combination... the everclear is really potent stuff.
Hopefully someone else knows the answer....

Question for someone who makes Supertonic!!! ------
I read somewhere online that you can juice all the ingredients instead of putting them in the blender - anyone know if that will be as effective? Then add the apple cider vinegar after?
I have a champion juicer. Anyone know?
thanks!

My only concern would be the toughness of the horseradish and ginger root... I'm not sure they would juice well enough to be of benefit.  If you can figure out a way around this I say go for  it and let us know how it turns out!

So bc the recipe calls for equal parts chopped - u think I should make sure I get equal parts juice from each?

Mainly my concern would be that with ginger root and horseradish it may take longer to extract the properties into the menstruum (acv in this case) due to the fibrous nature of these roots.
I would probably try to stick to equal parts, but it seems like it would be difficult to do, and possibly not have the potency of a formula that was allowed to sit and really soak.

Well my blender is not very good and the recipe says put equal parts in blender- then put it all in a jar covered w acv. The acv is more of a preservative in this case than an 'extracter'. My juicer is a champion juicer and masticates the fruit/veggie- getting juice out and expelling the rest of the product out the end. U think it would work if I juice it all and keep not only the juice but the masticated pieces and put it all in the jar? That make sense?

Makes sense to me, Rikki.   I vote go for it.
Are you planning to put the acv in, as well?   I believe the acv is more than a preservative, as there are healthy properties to RAW apple cider vinegar.

Absolutely ladyhen! I am using the raw acv- I just meant it wasn't really used as an ecstracter like how its used when making a tincture (pretty sure 'ecstracter' is not the correct term to be using here! Ha!) Ok I'm off to make my brew- I'll let everyone know how it turns out!

The term 'raw' means that it hasn't been pasteurized.  Unfiltered means that it hasn't been strained or filtered.  Heating (pasteurizing) kills the beneficial bacteria that caused the apple cider to ferment and become vinegar.  You will see a 'blob' floating in the bottom of a bottle of raw acv; or it could be filtered and just have some cloudiness.

However, unfiltered acv is not necessarily raw.  It could have been pasteurized.

Look for the term 'Raw' or 'unpasteurized' on your bottle of acv to be certain that you have raw.

Rikki, I might have you make my next batch with that Champion!  My children can't stand the touch of grit in mine as I only use the ss strainer and don't filter with muslin or paper.  Doesn't bother dh or I, though.   Wink

I just want to do a little dance.  Made my first Double E Immune tincture and just administered to kiddoes.  The glycerine one is done, the vodka one is still brewing.  ALL the 6 kids liked the taste.  Yipee!

We're boosting our immune systems in prep for travel, deer hunting, and then Thanksgiving feasting.  Lots of friends, families, little kids.  The whole petrie dish deal.

So there's my happy dance "FIRST TINCTURE!"

I forgot about making the Double E immune mix into a tincture. I will do that one next! I am glad I saw your post since it reminded me to make that one =)

I already have some glycerin tincture of immune booster and used the extra herb leftover to make an ACV tincture. Should I mix the glycerin/ACV to administer or give them separately? I did not know if the strengths of each would be enough to make a difference or if there was any reason to not mix them. I was mainly thinking about the taste of the ACV being a little better mixed with the glycerin when administered.

Has anyone ever mixed the two types? Any advice would be appreciated.Smiley

I've only gotten through 5 pgs so far, but wanted to post this recipe.  It's not a true tincture, but I tried it with Bulk Herb's dried elderberries, and the kids will drink it, as opposed to anything else I've made.  They will not touch either glycerite or alcohol tincture or the fire cider (hot veg. in ACV).  Do you think this will work?  My kids are sick again and I started giving them this tonight.

Elderberry Syrup

2 cups filtered water
4 ounces fresh elderberries (or 2 oz. dried)
1 cinnamon stick
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1 1/2 cups sugar
Directions
1Simmer the three above ingredients in 1 pint (2 cups of water) for 20 minutes.
2Let stand for 1/2 hour.
3Strain through a sieve pressing well.
4Then, add enough water to the simmered ingredients to bring the volume back up to 1 pint of liquid.
5Add the sugar and gently heat to dissolve the sugar in the hot liquid.
6Allow to cool and then pour into dark bottles and keep somewhere cool.
7Dosage: 2 teaspoons in a little water 3 times a day.

I think this will work but if it were me I would use honey or agave nector instead of sugar.  The Sugar might counteract some of the healing you are trying to get.  But the elderberry is a great immune booster.  I think you could use this same technique with other herbs like ginger too.

Thanks.  I did forget to say I used 3/4 C of raw honey.  Didn't have to warm anymore, just mixed in until dissolved.  This tastes much better than any other elderberry tincture we've tried, and quicker to make.  We're all taking it right now, since 2 are sick and the DH looks like he's going to get sick.  For some reason, my 5 yo has managed to avoid getting sick through the last 2 bouts.  I wish I could bottle whatever it is he has and give it to the others.  Smiley

I have never mixed these two but I don't see why you couldn't.  I do mix my Acohol ones with glycerin.   I don't see any way it would hurt to try.  Hope that helps.

Here's a way to figure out 1 ounce. You would want to put the herbs in a plastic bag because a plastic bag weighs practically nothing & do each ounce separate because for some herbs an ounce is about a cup of dried herb.
