How do I figure out how much is 2oz. dried herbs?

If you're referring to the dried elderberry, I just assumed it was the same weight as fluid oz. and used 1/4 cup.  I decided to try weighing it on my kitchen scale, which, apparently isn't very accurate.  It came out to a little more than 1/2 cup.  That looked like a lot of berries.  Then I decided to test the weight scale with water.  It measured 1/4 cup at 1 oz.  So, I guess it might be time to find a digital scale!  I would use somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 cup.  The 1/4 cup lent a pretty strong (but not overpowerful) taste of elderberry in the syrup, so I think I was okay.

Fluid oz and dry oz are totally different. You will not come up with an accurate measurement if you use one for the other. Fluid measures the volume (how much is in a given space) and dry measures weight. I think your scale should be just fine.

If you don't have a scale for weighing, the ABC Herbal gives a recipe. It's 1/4 of herbs to 1 cup of 60% glycerin and 40% water.

I recently ordered glycerin from www.essentialwholesale.com
for 16.00. I emailed them to aske if it was food grade. The rep. said it is USP vegetable kosher glycerin- she said it is actually higher than food grade. But they do not "sell" it for internal use b/c the website only sells products "for cosmetic use"  I am assuming that is why it is cheap.

Hey, has anyone made the berry brew from the bulk herb store Yet?  I just received my stuff today, I just need the blueberries and red grapes.  Not sure if this would be the place to post this question, I'm not sure if it's a tincture or not, but I was just wondering how it went if anyone tried it yet??

I have a batch in a gallon jar in the cellar right now!  It is on day #4 of the first week.  Looking forward to this!!  I have been researching some of these same ingredients for the past year so was very pleased to see the blend when bulk herb store put it on their site.

Quick question, I could not find any red grapes with seeds in them, fresh or frozen, all I could find was red seedless grapes, do you think that would be ok to use those instead?

Thanks

Totally up to you, Wendy.

I have a policy for myself of using what is available and not stressing too much about what I can't get or don't have.  ~ ~ Some benefit is better than none ~ ~

I have a printout of the different ingredients which has this to say about the grapes;

"Fermented Red Grapes help to inhibit cholesterol oxidation and arteriosclerosis.  Phytochemicals from this fruit are linked to anti-cancer actions, improving heart disease, as well as helping degenerative nerve diseases, viral infections and mechanisms of Alzheimer's disease.  The seeds of the grapes are a great source of beneficial compounds that contribute to the antioxidant actions along with concentrated Vitamin E, flavonoids, linoleic acid and tannins.  These are found in lower concentrations in the grape skin and juice along with resveratrol, another form of antioxidant. "

So, as I understand it, there is a redundancy in the benefits of the seeds, to a lesser degree, with grape skin.

Next time, maybe I can find ones with the seeds.

THis thread says Recipes for Tinctures, so I am posting my recipe for Herbal Respiratory.  I have used  Herbal Respiratory
http://www.mountainmeadowherbs.com/herbal-respiratory-p-107.html?osCsid=a465884ec9643d50bd557d8d5ac76def

from MountainMeadow herbs alot, and it has got us through alot of colds and breathing problems. I am attempting to clone the product as close as I can. I have no idea the amounts they use, only the ingredients, so I studied out the actions of the herbs a bit and have come up with the following formula, that I tweaked a bit. I left out the Elder because The Composition Formula (elder, peppermint, and Yarrow) has elder in it.

Herbal Respiratory Tincture Recipe

2 parts Anise
2 parts Elecampane
2 parts Thyme
1 part Nettle
1 part Sage
1/2 part Licorice
1/2 part Bayberry Bark

I plan to do this tincture 1/2 achohol and 1/2 glycerine, then mix the two together when I am done.

I added Sage because it helps with drying up runny noses and it is good for colds and flus anyway. Herbal Respiratory dosage is every 4 hours as needed.  I usually use 1 dropper for the 1 year old, and Up to 2 droppers for the 5-6  year olds., and you could use more for an adult if youw anted to. Every 4 hours , or up to 6x day maximum

rabbit tobacco or sweet everlasting would be a *wonderful* addition to a respiratory tincture.  I have been very impressed with this humble little herb!

If you must use vodka for the tincture, then I'd dry them.  I've read that using herbs/berries with any sort of water content can cause an alcohol tincture to mold.

I think a good alternative is to use a water based extraction like glycerine, honey, etc. with fresh berries.  You'd double the amount called for when using fresh vs. dried.

I know you've already done it, but next time, you might make the ticture without the berries and make a syrup with the berries. Then add the tincture to the syrup when you're about to take it.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions on the Herbal Respiratory.
I just placed a order to Morethanalive.com for a bunch of herbs. My children have trouble sleeping, Getting to sleep, and staying their own beds. My idea was to make 2 different tinctures (1/2 glycerine, 1/2 alcohol) and then have them take turns with them. I thought I would  give them Tincture I for 1-2 weeks, then trade off to Tincture II for 1-2 weeks until  we get a good sleep schedule going! I wanted herbs that my 1 year old little girl can take also. That is why I left out the Scullcap.

Here is what I have come up with

Sleep/Relaxing Tincture I

1 part Chamomile
1 part Catnip
1 part Lemon balm
1/2 part Lemongrass

I think this tincture will double as a fever reducer and Immune activator like the Childrens Composition Formula. Catnip, Lemongrass, and Lemonbalm all lower fevers, and Chamomile calms and relaxes, as well as acivates.  It should help upset tummies, colds, and flus also.

From Steven Horne(authour of ABC herbal) article...
Lemon Balm
Like yarrow and elderflower, lemon balm is also antiviral. It is another traditional remedy for colds and flu, but it is also useful for viral disorders like chickenpox, cold sores, and shingles. It has a calming effect on the thyroid and is relaxing and antispasmpdoc, so it helps calm aggitation and restlessness. ...

Optional Indredients
Various versions of Children's Composition may also contain catnip or chamomile. These herbs are also traditional remedies for indigestion, cold, flu, colic and fevers

Sleep/Relaxing Tincture II

2-3 parts Passionflower
1 part Oatstraw
1 part Peppermint
1/2-1 part Hops

I have another question re: dried elderberry.  I get mine from BHS and make a cough/cold syrup with honey, cloves, cinnamon etc.  Do you think I could reuse them, once they dry out again?  Or would the medicinal qualities be used up?  Maybe if I doubled the elderberry or reduced the amount of honey/water?  I'm trying to avoid ordering some more right now.

I know that when TincTract's are made ( a special way of making glycerites) they use the herb over and over in 2-3 different proceses until there is often the color is pale in the herb.   you could use them a few times maybe?

Oh, I think I just answered my question (I hope).  I just veiwed this Susan Weed YouTube video where she just rolls the berries straight off the plant and covers them with vodka!  Easy as that, so I'm thinking my mixture should be okay?  Hopefully.
here's the link.

I was under the impression you had to be more concerned about water content with a solvent like glycerin, honey or oil, than in one like alcohol or vinegar. I hope more comments will be made on this aspect of tincturing.

I am inclined to think you're right about that.   Wink

Just anecdotal, I know, but I put fresh onions, ginger, etc. into the apple cider vinegar for MasterTonic.   I have never had any problems with it and that is a tincture that we keep for a full year.

I do have a cough/cold syrup that uses elderberry simmered in water (with cinnamon and cloves) and then you add honey to it.  I keep it refrigerated and have never had a problem.  I can't use glycerin or alcohol, as the kids wouldn't take it then.  They tolerate the honey sweetened kind though.
