this has probably already been answered here but I don't have time to read through the whole thread...........How many drops of Chamomile Glycerite can you give a newborn baby?
There is very little I can find on WTM about the biological changes that occur to the blood brain barrier as an infant ages and I don't have the time to put something together at the moment. Please look into it. A weak tea might be a safer choice or an herb sachet, especially for a newborn whose body systems are not yet synchronized and stable.

I've seen Chamomile tea work good things when Mama drinks it.  I have also given the tea to baby.

There was a helpful post by herbs girl, I think, that had general dosing for tinctures and glycerites.  Was it deleted?

Chamomile is a pretty mild herb, IMO.

My midwife recommended I give a weak tea to one of mine when she was just days old.  A few drops with a dropper was all it took.

I will repost the information up here the best I can. Cheesy

The general rule for tincture dosages is 1-2 drops tincture for each 5 lbs body wieght.

3-4 times per day in chronic situations and 8-10 x per day in acute illnesses

Steven Buhner says that Glycerites are 1 1/2 times the dosage of tinctures because they are weaker.

Using those figures,   for a 10 lb baby,  a general dose  would be 3-6 drops of Chamomile glycerite.

Here is also a link to a newsletter by the Herbalist Steven Horne that explains Herbal use in infants and babies under 2 years. He says 1-5 drops of a glycerite  for a baby

http://www.treelite.com/NF/2008/05/PregnancyandChildbirth.pdf

Personally I have used a glycerite from Mountain Meadow herbs  that had chamomile in it for one of my babies. They consider it safe for babies and there are two testemonials about newborns on the site.  It really made my baby relax!

Thank you for all the replies.   If a person was hesitant to use it on a newborn would it be safer when the baby was say........a month old?   I guess I'm thinking the baby I was considering is about 2 weeks old.

I do have a cough/cold syrup that uses elderberry simmered in water (with cinnamon and cloves) and then you add honey to it.  I keep it refrigerated and have never had a problem.  I can't use glycerin or alcohol, as the kids wouldn't take it then.  They tolerate the honey sweetened kind though.

I made the elderberry syrup with sugar (aka Sambucol or sambucus) and the alcohol as a preservative. I read that if you are using honey you need more alcohol and should refrigerate it. The ratio for the non honey version was 4 oz per two cups of finished syrup.
You must sterilize your jars, lids, strainers, everything that touches it.
I think I measured a bit heavy on the alcohol (hic!  Roll Eyes) but it is really yummy. Next time I will make lots extra to use for just eating as syrup on things or making juice.

I gotta tell you though- the seeds are like rasperry seeds and the fruit to seed size ratio is not good. Plan ahead for a really good straining method which should include a tshirt or good cheese cloth to strain-twist as much out as possible.

For 4oz (1/2 cup) of the stuff in the store here it is $28!!! So it may take you all afternoon but it
is well worth it in the saving!!!

In my recipe, I used the dried berries.  Really easy.  I have to order some more from BHS.  I don't use any alcohol.  Just the water, berries (and other seasonings) and honey.  Put it in a canning jar (just washed, not sterilized) and keep it in the fridge.  I think I posted the recipe somewhere here.

Does anyone know how to clean the little glass droppers after you use them?  I ordered some of those amber colored glass jars with the little droppers in them.  They are great, but are impossible to clean! Angry  Esp. when you put garlic oil in them.  I put them in the dishwasher, but that oily residue is just so hard to get out.

Any suggestions?

thanks

Gee, I never thought about that, I guess some bottle brushes come with that littler one on the end, for the nipples, that would probably fit! Grin

Great idea, I'll have to pick one up tomorrow.
thanks!

Alcohol will sometimes "cut" oils and allow it to rinse clean. I've not tried it with garlic or vegetable oils, but it works well for essential and fragrance oils.

If the bottle brush doesn't work, a pipe cleaner might --I mean, they were made for cleaning the narrow tube of a smoking pipe so they should be just right for the job.

A bottle nipple brush might help with tincture bottles IF you can get it into the opening but it's not going to help with the droppers.

A q-tip helps clean the inside of droppers. Also, I second what Boysmama said, I put my droppers in a small amount of vodka (a narrow container works best to use the min amount of vodka) & let them sit awhile to get ess oils out of them- then clean with the q-tip.

I havent used garlic oil in years but I think I would put some straight liquid dish soap in the dropper, work the q-tip up & down in the dropper to break up most of the oil, then rinse well. Then let set in some vodka for a while to get the rest, clean with a fresh q-tip & rinse again.

If that doesn't get all of it, then try using a little grease cutting ess oil (citrus, eucalyptus, tea tree, etc) on the q-tip which should break up the garlic or veg oil. Then you would need to soak in the vodka to get the ess oil all out.
