infant stop breathing, lips turn blue then passes out....
« on: November 05, 2009, 12:43:20 AM » by Mrs_H
I just got an email from a friend whose baby has these episodes-
Here's her email- she is wondering if it could be Breathe Holding Spell (BHS)
has anyone heard of this or does it sound like something different. I will forward all responses on to her, also she attached a video and I would say the baby passes out and it is roused awake not sleeping. Thanks in advance!

"My Baby girl (approx 11months) has been holding her breath or having seizures, 5 episodes in total now in the last 4 weeks. Most recently Mon night and twice yesterday (Tues), to the point where she goes very pale, stiff, sometimes blueish and drooling. Then passes out or goes to sleep. The two times today she was moaning and making a strange swallowing, and a small jerking movements. She got blood taken yesterday and an EEG scheduled for Nov 17th. older DD has a history of breath holding, but not as often and scary as this. Please pray for Ian and I for peace, and wisdom for the Drs. I pray that this is just a more extreme breath holding spell (BHS), and nothing more serious."

If the mother is worried, it would be best to get it checked out.   I have had two breathe holders, the first was the worst.  He started it at about 10 months and it is kind of freaky to watch.  He almost always did it when he was overtired, got hurt (it always hurts worse when you are tired), experienced anxiety (especially separation from mommy), and/or got very mad (temper tantrum) or all of the above!  It does look like what I imagine a seizure might look like.  After they pass out they start to breath again and get up.

The description that you posted sounds exactly like what my son did.  The worst it ever got was one evening when I was gone for 2 hours, he passed out 5-6 times before my FIL just put him in bed.  He eventually did it less and outgrew it completely, but the last episode was when he was 4 years old or so.  My other son that did this only did it when both extremely tired and hurt, much, much less often.  I just put them on the floor where they couldn't bang their heads on anything and leave them alone till it is over.   Then they usually got a nap or put to bed for the night.  Tiredness was the number one factor for my kids.  I don't know if that helps, but she might look for some of the factors I listed above to see if something fits what is happening with her daughter.

"The two times today she was moaning and making a strange swallowing, and a small jerking movements. ."

This reminded me of someone we know... We have a young friend with a seizure disorder, and her seziures start with swallowing repetitively, and jerking movements, even for just small seizures. She then is EXTREMELY exhausted, and even somewhat unresponsive.

It sounds like the mom is having tests done, hopefully it isn't as serious is it is for our young friend, but I would definitely find out as much as possible to be prepared.

(NOTE by mod: Part of this veered off course too far, so has been deleted.  Any deeply spiritual discussion or insinuations regarding spiritual causes of seizures are best left for personal messages.)
This may raise some eyebrows, but PRAY over that little one. I don't mean pansy foo foo praying. If you are a prayer warrior, you know what I am saying. Rebuke death.

My sister had similar issues.  She would stiffen, pass out, etc.  My newly saved parents took her to a very conservative church.  The pastor told my parents to get rid of all their non-Christian music, and have my older sister and me out of the home at a certain time on a certain day, and that they would be praying then.  Pretty sure they told my Mom to be praying too.  Long story short, my sister stopped having these episodes after that afternoon.
In other words, I agree with HOMEFree...

I think praying is always a good idea, no matter what you think the cause is.  I was wondering, though, doesn't BHS sometimes cause a child to have a seizure and wet himself during an episode, then need to be roused afterward?  I only ever witnessed one seizure and it wasn't my child, so I'm not an expert, but I thought these two things were linked.   ~L

Was she upright when she started the seizure type behaviors? (moaning, jerking, swallowing)  Because children who hold their breath will have a seizure if they do not fall down into a flat position.

Our daughter has had two seizure experiences with breath  holding, the first time I caught her and was holding her upright (because I was scared witless!) and the second time she was sitting in her car seat and couldn't fall down flat.

Otherwise she just gets mad or hurt, turns blue, falls down, passes out, and then slowly rouses...

After reading through the links on this thread I realize that it may be due to anemia... something to check out.  She is dairy/gluten intolerant and we have just started working with a local ND to get things straight.  She's suppose to be tested for anemia next week, so I'll post the results when we get them.

NOTE by Mod: Am leaving this stand, as is.  Wise counsel, without being over the top.  Subsequent posts going beyond this caution are, again, veering too far off topic, so continuing with edits.  Sorry everyone!)

Im a nurse... I would have to agree, this definately sounds like seizure activity to me. I would check the EEG results and ask to have home oxygen available. Supplemental O2 is essential for children who experience seizures or breatholders. Too little oxygen can lead to some very scary outcomes. Its a small intervention that can very easily save a life. You (hopefully) may never even have to use it....but I'd certainly recommend it.

In response to others, Be careful about "rebuking death". This is not Biblical and it could lend parents who have lost children to believe their lack of faith or lack or prayers are what led to their child's lives being lost.  Death happens, it will happen to all... the faithful and unfaithful.

NOTE from Mod:  Edited parts of post which strayed from OP and into quality of life/end of life discussion.

I am a pediatric nurse as well, and I would have a tendency to agree with everything that Currlygirrly's assessment of the situation.  I would definitely look into this with a physician.

It's worth it to get it looked into and then figure out things from there.

Another option you might want to check out is a chiropracter.  My oldest son had several siezure episodes before we ended up at a chiropracters office. His first siezure took place right after his first birthday and he turned blue, eyes rolled into his head, and passed out.  In a miraculous way God lead us to a chiropractor.  The chiropractor found a "sublexation" or a pinched vertebrae up by his skull.  He explained to me that when the spinal chord gets completely pinched off, the electricity has to go somewhere...so it just kindda bounces around until the "kink" is released...thus the siezure.  When my son started crawing, he crawled with his head down and only for a week.  We thought it was funny, but apparently because of his misaligned neck, it was uncomfortable.  It took several visits and excercises to strengthen his neck muscles to hold his neck properly..once that was accomplished, he never had any more episodes.

(NOTE by Mod: Left this post stand - with my following post serving as a caution for everyone to now stay on topic.)

Very interesting about the chiro - I never would have thought of that.

Now, about the prayer thing - I believe that prayer is the single most powerful tool we have as Christians, for any circumstance that we face.  I believe that prayer is often not given enough importance.  I also believe that no matter what we pray, or how strong our faith, there is no way to control events 100% because our finite minds cannot understand the infinite reaches of the Lord's love for us.  Devastatingly sad things happen to people with unshakable, prayerful, faithful relationships with the Lord.  Still, I believe that it is good to express our hopes and desires to the Lord, as we would express them to our dearest friend - what friend could be truer or dearer than Jesus?
Now, I said that to simply explain my comment below regarding prayer.  I do not expect that every person on this forum has the same view, nor is it my goal to convince anyone.  In fact, I think it would be better to simply offer advice on how to deal with the situation at hand - be it herbs, prayer or specialists - and let the person dealing with this situation make the judgment calls using their own discretion and convictions.  Otherwise we risk alienating people who could really benefit from the healthful wisdom shared on this forum.
  Just my opinion.  ~L

Regardless of deeply-held beliefs, the truth of the matter is that we live in an imperfect (some would consider it a "fallen") world.  Often, "sad" things happen; people get sick, suffer serious injuries, age... die.  This process can feel utterly hopeless to those who do not believe there is a real purpose for each of our lives.  While I would love to share my strongly-held beliefs and offer comfort and hope, this particular thread (and even forum!) is not geared toward deep "insight" into the spiritual realm.

**Unfortunately, it is up to me to keep things on a more neutral level, so am making some basic changes to posts to reflect our guidelines here at WTM.  As such, previous posts regarding possible spiritual causes for seizures are being revamped - without further notice to those who had posted.  Please feel free to pm me if you have questions or concerns.

It is true that many of the people here are bible-believing Christians -- but there are likely many that are not.  We need to be sensitive to each other - and realize not all of us hold the same beliefs.  Some of the above postings that have been (or are being) edited could have been written a bit differently, while still maintaining their message regarding prayer.

All that to say "THIS IS A REMINDER to stay on track regarding the original post."  If a person truly has sometime they feel "led" to share regarding specific spiritual beliefs, then it may be best to use the pm feature... If you choose this option, PLEASE use wisdom and tact (as in, it might be a good time to PRAY before you send out a pm of this nature, as you may unintentionally do more harm than good, depending upon the receiver's circumstances.) Wink

Thank you for understanding...
