Throat Coast and Gypsy Cold Care while pregnant

I'm in the process of trying to fight off the horrible sore throat that had my husband down the last couple days...I'm downing echinacea and as we finished up the last of our bottle of Berry Well, we're impatiently waiting for our case of six to get here...that should kill it!

But anyway, I'd like to take some Traditional Medicinals tea to help...either Throat Coat or Gypsy Cold Care, but both boxes say the normal "DO NOT USE if pregnant or breast-feeding unless directed otherwise by your doctor". It seems like that warning is on pretty much anything herbal so I don't give that much credence, especially since I checked all the herbs against the lists that I've found on here of herbs not to take during pregnancy. The only one that I found that might be a problem was cinnamon, but it's only a little bit in a blend and it's in tea so I didn't think it would be that much of a problem. I typed up the ingredient lists for the two teas below...and would greatly appreciate it if anyone could tell me why I shouldn't drink them while pregnant (I'm 30 weeks) or breastfeeding.

Gypsy Cold Care:

Elder flower - 350 mg
Yarrow flower - 350 mg
Peppermint leaf - 350 mg
Hyssop herb - 140 mg
Proprietary blend - 560 mg - containing: rose hip, cinnamon bark, ginger rhizome, safflower petal, clove flower bud, licorice root dry aqueous extract

Throat Coat:

Licorice root - 760 mg
Slippery elm bark - 80 mg
Licorice root dry aqueous extract - 60 mg
Marshmallow root - 60 mg
Proprietary blend - 1,040 mg - containing: wild cherry bark, bitter fennel fruit, cinnamon bark, sweet orange peel

I've heard that there might be some problems with licorice root while pregnant. Has anyone else heard this?

I don't know if it is the same, but Licorice can cause miscarriage/preterm labor! Its also been shown to lead to other adverse effects!

I've heard marshmallow root is also not reccomended.
Have you tried the lemon and honey trick?

Wow, I didn't know that about licorice...I'm assuming it's the same thing as the licorice root in the teas...so thanks for the heads-up! So, after I deliver, would there be any reason why I shouldn't drink these teas whilst nursing?

Yep, licorice root is not recommended for use during PG or nursing:

"Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra): increases blood pressure; large doses can cause heart failure, headache, lethargy, water retention, and excessive excretion of potassium" (Susun Weed).

I think I've seen it related to contractions, too.

I think you would have to get a LOT of it to cause problems. The small amounts in those teas I would question as being harmful. Do your research. Wink
