URGENT ? about 12 yr old DD's menstuation.
« on: November 16, 2009, 10:24:36 AM » by guysgal
She has a heavy flow, gets very pale, feels lightheaded and sometimes will faint. Should I take her to a dr? I hesitate to do that because we just moved and I don't know a good dr here. Because her flow is fairly heavy I think the whole "transition to womanhood" has been a bit traumatic for her. I don't want to make it worse by taking her to an insensitive dr.

My thought is maybe she needs iron?

I'll be searching through the existing threads to try to find some ideas. If anyone has ANY ideas at all, please help.

Thank you.

I would definitely supplement iron. Heavy flow can cause anemia which starts a vicious cycle as the anemia worsens the heavy bleeding, which worsens the anemia.

The problem with iron is that some forms are highly constipating... more later...

I agree with the possibility of anemia.

While your daughter's body is adjusting to womanhood, it will likely go through strange phases.

There was a year or so during my early teens that I had spontaneous nose bleeds the day before my period started.  And then the nosebleeds stopped, and I haven't had one since.

Here's a thread you may want to look at:

If she were my daughter I would:
Make sure she's taking a good multi vit
Give her chaste berry (vitex)on her heavy days
A week of red raspberry tea or capsules before her period
have her take liquid chlorophyll ( natures sunshine) for iron

You may also want to read this thread ;

if you haven't yet.

In addition to the suggestions already given, I would encourage you to try cloth pads.  They have made an enormous difference for myself and my daughters.

Although I don't use cloth pads, when I switched from pads/tampons to Insteads, it made a huge difference.

I also recommend calcium/magnesium.  Although it miight not help lessen the heaviness, it can really help w/ cramping.

If you want to slow a heavy flow and control bleeding  use a strong infusion (or tea if your in a hurry) of red raspberry leaf. I'd put a cup of leaf in one qt. almost boiling water. Bilberry leaf in a tea or infusion will help with any pain.

menstrual cramps

Heavy lifting, using too much heat for pain relief, getting chilled...can all prolong the bleeding or cause a heavier/more painful cycle the next month.

Thank you all so much!

I've read through the suggested threads, websites and articles. As usual, this website is full of eye opening information. I had no idea that commercial feminine products are so toxic. I had a lot of questions answered about some symptoms my older daughter has been having as well!

I've got a shopping list for herbs and iron and wondering how brightly colored cloth pads would be received as Christmas gifts this year LOL !

Thanks again. What a blessing it is to have found this site!

Floradix is great for bringing your iron up QUICK!! And is non constipating. Our local Sprouts has it. Expensive, and it goes bad quickly once opened. So you'd prolly want to do the smaller bottle even though its more expensive per oz. and in the future I'd buy it from luckyvitamins.com GREAT prices. i also get my organic pads from them cause I can't stomach cloth yet Smiley

Should I be looking for the Floradix iron & herbs or the multivitamin?

Also, DD weighs 90lbs. I know too much iron is dangerous. How can I calculate a dose for her?

If that was my daughter, I would take her to a doctor of traditional or classical Chinese medicine.  There are herbs for the problem she has that work well.   I do not think that simply dosing with iron is the way to go, but that is just my opinion.

However, when I was menopausal and had excessive, really serious, bleeding, I treated myself with simple herbs in large amounts (I made them into a tea) and within 24 hours the bleeding was back to normal, and never became excessive again.  For what it is worth.

Great suggestions. Red raspberry tea can also be drank during periods. Red raspberry is a wonderful female reproductive toner. You can't go wrong with this one.
Floradix is great too.

A note on iron...

Yellow dock worked very well for me, after I had my last baby.  I took it in capsule form.

Yes!  Yellow dock is FABULOUS for building iron and regulating you--great for the liver, too!  You will need the capsules.  Tongue

UPDATE:

This is the third month of using cloth pads. My daughters were so skeptical at first! Now they go on and on about how much BETTER they are than disposable pads and SO COMFORTABLE.  Grin

My 15 year old has struggled with years during her cycle. I'm happy to report that each month the yeast became less and less. She did the Yeast Assassin and cut out most sugar which I know helped tremendously, but I don't think she would have had as good of results without the addition of cloth pads. The disposables just made the yeast so much worse each month. So, the 15 year old is totally sold on cloth.

My 12 year old daughter struggled with heavy bleeding. Each month with the cloth, the bleeding has gotten less and less. We really worried the first month as she bled out of the cloth pads and we had to wash them all every day. This month, there has been no bleeding out, no pale face, no fainting. So, the 12 year old is also sold on cloth.

We splurged on the Luna brand because we thought the design was neat and the girls loved the fabrics. Now that they're convinced how great they are, we're going to save some money and start sewing our own. Wink

Yay!  What a fantastic testimony!  My 11yr old dd (12 next week) just started her cycle and I am so happy she could start with cloth also.  What a difference it makes!

Good for your girls for being willing to try something so new!

I still do not understand how an internal organ would respond to an external sanitary napkin. I'd encourage cloth for many reasons but that it actually makes you bleed less?  Very skepital.....
