You can find fresh roasted all over these days....and triple certified (Fair Trade, Organic, Shade Grown) is easly available over the internet. Here's what I buy: http://www.novocoffee.com/default.asp
Everything was flavored.  Don't they have just coffee flavored coffee?  I drink whatever I can get, but I do like to splurge on the expensive stuff now and again.  I bought some beans (grocery store) and ground them.  Pretty good stuff, but the beans probably aren't that great, because to be honest the coffee doesn't taste much different than my old standby Folgers Dark Roast.   Undecided  (I don't think Folgers is good for you, but in moderation, I don't personally think it's anywhere near as bad as some of the other junk we put in our bodies on a daily basis.)

You can buy pre-roasted beans at www.capulin.com as well.  Its a splurge- but is well worth it, if you enjoy good coffee.

I can't seem to find any prices on bulk.  Only 1/2 lb samplers.  $20/lb is pretty pricey.  How big of a scoop do you need for a good stiff pot (10-12 cups) of coffee?

I am not sure on how to tell you how many scoops- I run mine through an espresso machine.  Generally, I would recommend just slightly less than you would normally use.

Here is the link to the Green Bean prices

It is a semi- expensive coffee, the price is supporting a lot of things- to include a decent wage for the farmers, in return, you get an amazing cup of coffee, that is nutritionally intact.

I would really like to know the exact mechanism by which coffee (not caffeine) raises syrum cholesterol. Any what that would mean to the individual drinking coffee with high cholesterol.

Remember cholesterol IS NOT BAD!!!!! YOUR CELLS MAKE IT. 80% of the cholesterol in your body is endogenous...meaning it was manufactured by your body. You can eat straight aninmal fat all day long for year and you may or may not end up with hight cholesterol. Ever been to Baffin Island?? Besides there are SEVERAL published benefits to having high cholestrol.

Don't even get me started on statin drugs. Most people won't be able to handle that one!!

If you drink coffee everyday wouldn't it make sence to buy high quality beans?? Geez you guys are a bunch of tight wads around here.   Grin

Tightwad is right.  I would rather drink cheap coffee so that my husband can spend his money more freely (he doesn't drink coffee).  Grin  He really likes this quality in me.  Wink  I do however appreciate a good coffee, but I don't like French roast.  I don't know what flavor would be most equivalent to Folgers regular dark roast, but I like it.  I also like the Kiwani (or whatever) roast flavor that they sell at Quik Trip.  I also like regular roast from Gevalia.  Anyone know what flavor I would order to taste similar?

We like to have nice, more expensive coffee for an occasional treat and for company - my husband LOVES it actually and I love spoiling him, but for everyday, we drink folgers dark roast too.  Usually mix it with some decaf about half & half.  I think a lot of it has to do with the way it is brewed.  My husband can make folgers taste downright delicious whereas I've had some really badly brewed gourmet coffees that were disappointing.

I have a great deal of respect for all of the tightwads on here!  I learn how to be more frugal just about every day by reading your wisdom.

Thanks!   Grin

I recently discovered that IKEA's coffee is pretty good and it's only about $5 a pound! The problem is the labels are in Swedish so it's hard to know what kind you're getting. I heard, from someone who is part Swedish, that Gevalia is their everyday stuff in Sweden, even though we consider it kind of gourmet, and IKEA's is a little better than Gevalia. I know that's not helpful for those with no IKEA nearby though, so sorry about that.

I am interested in roasting my own nice beans, though, and I'm wondering how much weight the beans lose in roasting. Does a pound shrink down to half a pound? I just want to know how much I'm paying compared to what I could buy already roasted so I can be a better tightwad.

My background is that my husband has owned a coffee roasting company for the last 7 years (for those of you that didn't see my earlier post). He is the only employee and I'm his main helper.  I don't know nearly as much as he does, but I've been able to pick up a lot. We've been lucky that we get to try coffees from around the world for "free". My husband is really cute about (and obsessed with) his coffee. He can tell what you've given him just by its smell most times. Whether its Guatamalan or Mexican or whatever. Once someone gave me a bag of Starbucks and I didn't tell him, but when I brewed it he smelled it and said Is that Starbucks coffee?

Coffee will lose between 12 and 20% of its weight when roasted depending on how dark you take it.

I checked out the two green coffee links mentioned earlier - ouch - the prices are like regular retail. You're paying almost $15 dollars a pound if a half pound bag is $7. But they are nicely sized bags.

Even Organic or Fair Trade or shade grown Coffees will never be over $3 a pound from an importer. A really nice colombian is under $2 while a Tanzanian Peaberry might be closer to $3. The exceptions would be Kona or Jamaican Blue Mountain - major treats there. I'm sure they're yummy wherever you get them, but my policy is to never pay retail!

I have no idea about the cholesterol, but I'll see if I can find out. I'm guessing it has to do with liver function. For example people who are very sensitive to caffeine or people who are unaffected by caffeine are said to have a problem with either phase one or phase two liver detoxification. It was really just a blurb. It hasn't stopped our coffee drinking any yet!

I've been reading Eat Fat Lose Fat and this book says that women with high cholesterol are actually LESS likely to suffer from heart disease and those with low cholesterol are at higher risk contrary to the common belief.

Hello, To roast in a popcorn popper you want to get one with a fluid air bed.
How do you know what you're getting?  Are we talking about one of those things that shoots the popped corn into a bowl?  I really don't need another kitchen appliance  Roll Eyes but I'm intrigued nonetheless.  Grin

Same here. I'm cringing at the thought of storing a big popcorn popper. I used to have a friend from Mexico who told me they used to roast their own coffee. She said all they did was put it in the pan, dry, nothing else, and stir it. And she said it smelled so good! Then I met someone else from Ethiopia and that's what they did, too. You have to figure most cultures and people throughout history have not had air popcorn poppers. It's probably more work and more likely to burn for the easily distracted types like myself  Roll Eyes, but I think I'm going to try it without the air popper first. That is, whenever I get some beans.

Does anyone know if instant coffee is ok to drink?  I have made some coffee mixes with the intant coffee so that I don't have to buy the expensive coffee mixes from the store (and to avoid the weird additives) but I think I had heard somewhere that instant coffee was problematic.

Any info on the subject would be appreciated.
Here's a little info on instant coffee. Scroll down to see how they make it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instant_coffee

It doesn't sound like they use any chemicals to make it, but it is definitely processed and loses some of it's benefits.

Quote
"The advantages of instant coffee are speed of preparation (no time is required for infusing the coffee — it is ready as soon as the hot water is added), reduced weight and volume, and long shelf life (natural coffee, especially in ground form, loses flavour as its essential oils evaporate over time).

The disadvantages are that instant coffee is easily spoiled if not kept dry and that its taste is of a lower quality than that of freshly-brewed coffee. In particular, the percentage of caffeine in instant coffee is less, and undesirable bitter flavor components are more present. The lowest quality coffee beans are used in the production of instant coffee (the best beans are usually kept to be sold whole) and sometimes other unwanted residues from the harvest are used in the production process."

I also noticed that to decaffeinate coffee they use a "solvent" - scary word!  Unless it is "water decaffeinated", then it's just processed.

Never mind. I found this article:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coffee_roasting   and it sounds like it takes a lot of skill to roast in a frying pan. Well, maybe I'll try it anyway. (I'm learning the fun of using wikipedia.)

It is considered worse because of the chemical process that it goes through to remove the caffeine is dangerous on your stomach lining and their digestive juices.  I read this in Caffeine Blues by Stephen Cherniske.

Yes, lots of chemicals used in order to decaffeinate coffee, although there is something called the "Swiss Water Process" that only uses water, so if you look for that, your decaf may be okay. More info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decaffeination

I'm wanting to try roasting my own green beans & wonder: My air popper appears to have an aluminum chamber. Any comments? I obviously try to avoid aluminum in cookware. Would it harm the beans? or for that matter, the popcorn we occasionally pop in there? Could you estimate a length of time it usually takes to roast coffee in the air popper? Any other kitchen appliances I could use besides that one? I think I can get Jamaican Blue Mountain green beans at our local roasters. Know any info on these? Are the C__ (sp?) ones better?

I am curious to know what is your favorite coffee!!!

I discovered what I consider to be the best coffee ever!  It is organic Sumatra from www.mojoroast.com.  She roasts your coffee after you place your order.  She is super picky about the coffee beans so she only used the best of the best and has rejected many bags of the green coffee beans that don't meet her requirements.  I've actually gotten to know her since I have been buying her coffee for over a year now and she is definately a coffee expert.  I also love her organic Peru and Organic Mexican Cafe Femenino.  She specializes in organic and fair trade coffee.

When I run out before I can get more of her coffee I usually buy another organic or other brand at the local stores.  I am always disappointed in them.

"The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem"

OK, we are coffee junkies here!  Seriously, we only drink 2 cups per day, but we LOVE good coffee.

Here in MN, the coffee of choice is Caribou Coffee.  Local company (used to be) and they sell their beans at the stores and some grocery places.  We buy their ORGANIC beans at COSTCO in a 2.5 pound bag for WAY cheaper than the shops.  I would guess you could get it on line.  Try Costco or Caribou Coffee's website and see what you find.  It's a very good bean.  Medium, not light or dark.

I'm the nut from another thread who wrote about egg coffee, but our daily coffee is brewed in a French Press.

Hi! I may be repeating something here (skimmed the thread, didn't see it), but I just wanted to recommend the coffee I'm now using.

I drink coffee at LEAST twice daily (2 cups each time), and after reading Maker's Diet, I made the switch to whole bean, organic, fair trade coffee. I get it from Green Mountain Coffee in VT. It's really, really good, and it helps me think I've made coffee "healthy"! They're really reasonably priced, too. Way cheaper than the Starbucks already ground that I was buying before.

They also have a neat autoship thingy, and YOU get to choose how often you want it shipped (I hate those once a month, every month, whether  you need it or not things).

Well, that's my plug for the day. Off to pour my second cup!

Hope y'all have a great day!

Blessings,
Emily

I just wanted to tell all of you I was just listening to one of the CDs that came with my Ttapp order. And on there, don't know who or on which CD, someone mentioned that coffee actually helps you to STORE fat. They say to switch to green tea, which actually helps you BURN fat. SOO.... what do you think I'm gonna do??

I also noticed that when I drink green tea, I get the caffeine boost I'm looking for, but I feel good. When I drink coffee, I get a "boost" but I feel horrible. I get a really weird sick feeling, and I get headaches. Hhhmmm....
