  Are feminine products safe???
« on: October 05, 2006, 10:06:52 AM » by Beth
I have a question. I've been reading about sanitary napkins and dioxin (bleach residules) and I was just wondering if anyone had any research on the safety of wearing sanitary napkins? I don't use tampons but from what I can gather it isn't really safe to wear pads either because of the bleaching process used in the manufacture of them. Of course the big hoax web site says it's a "hoax". But there does seem to be some legitimate information that says dioxin can cause heavier bleeding, which of course would make us buy more and make more money for the sanitary napkin industry. Well honestly I just don't know.     My daughter tried this out a few times and she insists she bleeds less with homemade napkins.  I have never tried it.   Does anyone have a good information site that is reliable. There are after all alot of conspiracy theories out there.  I just want a reliable  source.    Undecided  Any info would be appreciated

My midwife told me to buy anything but always. She said always has asbestos in it.  I think that is the right word.

I don't think they are- based on research I did a few years ago.  I use a Keeper menstrual cup- there is also one called a diva cup.  If you search there is a thread here about it.  You can also use cloth pads- you can buy them or find a recipe to make them.  I also think it is a way to walk more gently on this earth and save money at the same time.

And they are also so much more comfortable!

After doing a bit of research on them a couple of years ago (Sorry, no links or articles.  It was a while ago and I didn't save any of it) I swapped to organic/all natural/unbleached products.  I don't believe these are the "ideal" but are better than what is available on the grocery store shelf.   Roll Eyes

I've looked into the "Keeper" and "DivaCup" but haven't personally tried them yet.  One of these days!

I've just been starting to read info about it not being safe, but here is a link to some reusable feminine napkins that look really good.

I use the Diva and homemade pads too.  I used my favorite kotex pad as my template.  No snaps or anything.  If you want more info, email me and I'll tell you how I did it and what materials I used.  Fleece makes a great backing that sticks to your underwear without extra bulk from wings.  I really love the Diva, though.  It's been great.  It makes that time of the month a little more pleasant and less yucky feeling.

anybody have a comfortable pantyliner to recommend?  i have tried several and am getting quite a stockpile of ones i can't stand!  i use always liners right now and after hearing about asbestos would like to find a different one before i run out.  are the homemade ones thin enough to use as a liner?  i am getting "friendly" with the diva cup, having used it for 3 days.  hoping to get better at using it over time.

I sell ones that can be used as a liner.  I can also custom make them so they could fit what you want.

Sorry I don't have any research for you but just personal experience. I knew the tampons weren't the best for you but used them because the throw away pads made my skin itch like crazy! I couldn't hardly sleep at night because of it. I tried all brands and they all made me itch, I am guessing it must be what they make them out of.

However, on tampons I definitely had a lot more cramping and bleeding. I seem to remember more bleeding with the pads too but not as bad as on the tampons.

When I switched to cloth, that as far as I can remember being the only thing I changed at the time, the bleeding was less as were the cramps. (cramps lessened even more with my taking of EPO of course) What I loved about the cloth is I didn't itch anymore! I could sleep at night during my period, it was wonderful. I must be really sensitive to what is in those things.

I use a regular cloth pad as a liner when I need it. They make ones that are "liner size" but I haven't bought any. Since they are cloth it really feels like just wearing thicker underwear. I find them comfy. Haven't tried the Diva Cup yet. They also make all natural sponges that you wash and reuse and replace now and then to use like an all natural tampon. I saw those at lunapads.com though I haven't tried those either. Anybody tried these before?

I tried always, stayfree, and a few others and they all made me itch like crazy!  Glad I'm not the only one.  I bled  and cramped more with commercial pads than I did with my misscarriage, for which I used homemade cloth ones.  OK, I folded a dark colored washcloth in thirds and stuck it in my panties- the cheap thinner ones from walmart, not the thick luxurious ones- they are too big.  Mine didn't even leak!  My friend said she didn't bleed as much when she used the pads from the health food store, but they are too expensive for me and I trust my own more anyway.  My 2 cents.

Switched to cloth myself a while back....bought some samples...then used a folded washcloth a couple of times. My cloth samples have lasted over a year and dark colored washcloths ( cheaper/thinner ones) work great. I too have noticed less cramping with no tampons. Big difference in the budget as well!!!!

I NEVER thought that the pads could cause itching!   Angry  They were in an odd spot (more on the backside/inner thigh) but still w/i proximity of the pad.  Always worse that time of the month, too.  Roll Eyes Thanks for solving that puzzle, ladies!  Love the feedback!   Cheesy

DD & I both itch & end up almost raw from reg. store pads. We can use the ones from the HFS but  they cost too much IMO. We switched to using washcloths several months ago & they are SOOOO.. much more comfortable. Lighter flow & less cramping too.  Grin Grin I had heard that would happen but didn't really believe it so it was a nice benefit. For heavy days we overlap 2 washcloths so the center is 2 layers & about 2" at each end is single layer. We then fold it lengthwise so it's 5 layers at the ends & 10 layers in the middle. A little bulky but not as bad reg. heavy pads & it works well. They stay put & don't shift. They leak through occ. but reg. pads shift & leak around the edges all the time.  Overall, both of us have been happy w/them.

As far as the person asking about panty liners, how about a thin washcloth or flannel square folded into thirds? I haven't tried this but I think it would work.

As far as tampons (& maybe the Diva cup) I have heard that the flow can back up the falopian (sp?) tubes & get into the adominal area causing endometreosis (sp?). I don't know for sure, but the logic of it makes sense to me so I stopped using tampons & my DD doesn't use them.

Just my .02. Blessings ~herbalmom

I am trying to switch to more cloth, but it is harder when I am away from home.  For those times, I use Seventh Generation brand disposable napkins.  They are free of dioxins (bleach) and other harmful chemicals.

I sure enjoyed the use of the cloth pads (PIMPs)...easy to clean and I did bleed less.  Comfortable and I don't think they shifted (snapped wings).  Thanks for the help in making that decision, Ladies!   Kiss

How long does a cloth pad last? Is it hard to wash? How many should one own?

I've been using cloth pads for quite awhile now.  I could never go back to store bought pads.  I have to be gone 8 hours at a time sometimes and one pad goes all day with no leaking, not even close.  And absolustely no smell.  I bleed waaayyyy less then I ever did with store pads.  Go figure.

Here's where I bought mine:   http://www.mom-and-me-creations.com/ClothMom.html

She does a great job and I highly recommend them.  And it's nice that she's a christian.  Smiley

I can't imagine cloth pads not lasting nearly a lifetime.  Mine wash very easily.  I have a small trash can with a lid with a liner in it under my bathroom sink.  I throw them in there and at the end of the week just throw them in my washer.  On cold or they'll stain!!  I bought a lot but I would do it differently now.  I didn't worry about what I overbought though because my daughters will use the ones I don't.  The ones I wear for just daily use I just toss in our laundry basket.

I bought 18 large/post partum type pads and that is sufficient to use as pantyliners daily with the inner liner removed and monthly they will last all week of a cycle.  I did buy a bunch of pantyliners that I wouldn't buy again because I like them longer then these are.  But if I'm desperate I just put two together to make it longer.  The 9" pads I bought my daughters will use.  So, all that said, I think 12-18 large cloth pads would probably be suffucient.  And I'm lazy.  I don't like to do laundry but every week and a half or two so you could probably get by with just 10 if you do laundry more often then that.
