Sorry, I don't have time to read this whole thread.  I have a big question: My 8 year old son who was vaccinated for chicken pox has shingles on his face.  Poor baby.  It looks pretty painful.  Well, the doctor said he was contagious, and our two younger girls, who have not been vaccinated could get chicken pox.  Does anyone know how likely this is, and how long it would take for them to get it??  We're trying to plan a trip to Disney at the very end of March, first of April, and are wondering if we need to cancel the plans, or if they should be over it by then.  Any thoughts??  Thanks so much!

Generally It takes 14 days to get them and last 1 to 2 weeks.  But once they scab over I think they are no longer contagious.

If anyone near eastern South Carolina wants their kids to catch it, my son has it right now. We "caught" it from a friend intentionally. Her kids caught it from a boy at church who got it in spite of having had the vaccine. I always laughed at the thought of a chicken pox vaccine. Just have it as a kid and you're done! My ds is 3.5 yo & he is doing great. Wouldn't know he has it except for the pox all over him. No fever, running around like normal. DD, 2 yo, hasn't showed any yet. His are starting to heal over now. Not sure how long he will be contagious?

Thanks.  Do you know if it's 14 days from the start of the illness, or 14 days from the end?  He's scabbing over right now, so I'm hoping he's at the end of the contagious part.  We're going to have some really sad children if we have to miss Disney World  Cry.

From the time of contact with a sick kid, it takes 14-20 days for your child to get sick.  A day or two of fever and maybe sore throat, then spots start.  Spots can take 3-7 days to spread, pop and then scab, sometimes longer.

We had SAME deal a few years ago.  Had our plane tickets, then 3 boys got pox.  We knew baby girl would get them RIGHT at trip time, so we quick, purchased ticket insurance and then when dd got them, we were able to change our ticket with just a note from the doctor.

So, plan on well child to get pox starting 14-20 days after first exposure to sick child.  When your son first showed shingles would count as day 1, I expect.

Hope you can make it all work out!

  It looks pretty painful.

Have you tried the Sea Breeze mentioned in previous posts?  Apparently it really helps with the pain and itch.  Applying it (or any other ointment) with a pain brush sounds so soothing.

You would be smart to start him on lysine plus herbal anti-virals.  The girls would probably benefit from a daily dose of anti-virals as well, plus some immune modulating (tonic) herbs.

For shingle pain, try this thread http://www.welltellme.com/discuss/index.php/topic,13504.msg128137.html#msg128137

Shingles are contagious 7 days (onset of rash until all sores have crusts).  The incubation period from the time of exposure is 14 to 16 days.  So if the kids don't "catch it" until the last day of contagiability (is that word? Grin), then theoretically, you'll be at risk for dealing with this for, at most, 30 days and you should know if the others are going to catch it within 2 weeks of the healing of the baby.

Thank you all for the help.  As long as both the girls get it within the next two weeks, we should be OK.  The only way it could be during the trip would be if one of the girls got it, then the other one got it 14 days later.  Here's hoping...

Also, I put him on antibiotics per doctor's instructions.  The reason I did this is, he got a golf ball size swelling underneath the rash.  So, it was infected.  We do take antibiotics seriously.  None of my children have taken them in over 3 years, but I think a big infection like that needs to be taken care of.

Anyway, all that to say this--the rash started healing up immediately!  Today it's about half the size of yesterday.  Shocked  If it were viral, like they thought, then it shouldn't have healed so quickly, don't you think?  So, I'm really, really hoping it's not shingles at all, but impetigo.  That's a bacterial infection that sometimes looks like shingles. Do you think that's possible??  Oh, wouldn't that be great!!!  Smiley  We'll see...

Hi, this is my first post so I apologize in advance if I make a mistake! Just wanted to say I was diagnosed with shingles today. I had shingles many years ago as a teen, in my ear, very painful!! This time around, I have had skin or nerve pain for three days prior to the visual break out. I knew something was wrong but could see nothing to cause such pain. The Dr. says I have a severe case and has perscibed several things, including an antiviral med. and steroid. I was not thrilled about the steroid but the Dr. says without it I could end up with nerve pain permanently. I don't want that as this pain, per the Dr. ranks at the same level as kidney stones and child birth. Have to say I agree!! Anyway I wanted to let others know the Dr. says dormant shingles can be woke up if you have a weakened immune system, fever, or stress. We had a bad case of crude a few weeks back and then it seemed to be coming back, so I had gargled GSE and did nothing for my fever, thinking to let my body fight the germ. Guess that fever is what brought this out break of shingles. Any way knowing this I will never again let a fever go. I can not think that vaccinating for CP and letting kids get shingles could even come close to being a good trade off.

I am sure, I will need to be checking for a thread to get the steroid out of my system after this. Sorry this seems so long and wordy.

I just wanted to mention that my kids had chicken pox a couple of weeks ago (they were vaccinated, too!) and oatmeal baths worked GREAT!  I didn't use anything that might dry their skin out.  I just put oats in an old nylon sock and stuck it in the bath water and rubbed the oat slime all over their skin and left it there.  Whenever they got a little itchy I just put more oatmeal water slime on their skin and they were fine!  No scratching at all.  Just wanted to share what worked for us!

My kids got chicken pox a few years back.  My Husband had Shingles, and they got chicken Pox from him.  A friend gave me this recipe.  It is sticky and messy, but it WORKS
Comfrey paste
1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup wheat germ oil
Comfrey Leaf (fresh or dried) or root (Dried powdered)

combine honey and wheat germ oil (high in vitamin E) in blender.  Add enough comfrey to make a paste.  Apply the paste liberally to chicken pox sores to help with itch, and to speed healing.  Comfrey contains allantion, which regenerates cells quickly, thus helps speed healing.

I put it all over them after a bath, and put an old sheet under them to keep the paste off of the bedding.  They stuck to the sheets, and that part wasn't much fun, but by the next morning the sores were SO much better it was worth it.

You said  you used this on the CP but did your husband use it on his shingles? I do not have itching, just burning & pain with lots of the little blisters that have not popped yet. Do you think this comfry would be better to use after the blisters pop to speed healing or would it be OK now!

Also, does anyone know if clothing & towels that have been contaminated with shingles should be disposed of, or will laundering kill the germs? I had heard to dispose of them?  Undecided   Seems a little extreme, but I hope to never have this again, nor would I wish it on anybody else.

Can somebody please tell me how long children are contagious with CP? Are they contagious when they scab up??

Our 2 youngest haven't had them yet and were exposed twice now in the last month. (Last time was a week ago.) And if they do get them this time, how soon will they be contagious? The India Childrens Choir is in the area for a while and their tour manager, who happens to be my cousin, does NOT want his 20 some children to get them. So I just wanted some info so I know when to stay away.  Roll Eyes

We have chicken pox here.  Two recovering, two haven't shown spots yet, and two severe cases.  The ones that currently have it (3yo and 9mos) have quite a few on their faces.  Is there something I can put on them to prevent scarring?  They don't seem to itch, so I just need something to help heal the skin.

?...  DS (2yo) was held yesterday by a neighbor that didn't know she had shingles until today.  She had a long-sleeve shirt on over the sores so, unless she'd itched and then touched him, he had no contact with the actual sores or ooze...  Can he still catch CP from her- is it possible for the virus to be airborne or something???  I'd be just fine if he got it but wanted to know if I need to be cautious about who we're around in the meantime if he was sufficiently exposed to CP...

My kids got CP from my Hubby, by using the towell he had used.  We didn't know he had shingles yet, and he left his towell hanging in the bathroom, and the kids used it.  At least that's how we figure they got it.  I don't know if it can be airborne, but unless your kids were touching something that touched the blisters they probably won't get it IMO

Well, we are about to find out if my (Aug 07) blood titer was an error or not.  Baby, 10 months, was exposed two weeks ago.  He did a lot of kissing on a fellow baby who so happened to break out two days later!  Kiss He should be showing the pre-spot symptoms the next few days, and break out this weekend.  All he did yesterday was sleep and he is very droopy eyed and crabby today.  This is a good sign!  Let's pray that I do not have these same symptoms in two weeks!!  Undecided  My mom was telling me last weekend how sick I was last time.  She was very concerned and she is  a nurse (the common sense type).  I guess I was very lethargic and even hallucinated.  That was 20 years ago when I was 16.
My doc called yesterday morning in a panic because I had no immunity for varicella and it is rampant in the county right now.  I had a good laugh because I had a raging case in HS, I still have scars.  I called my parents and they too had a good laugh.  When I returned the call to my doc I told her that I had a severe case and therefore have to have immunity.  She said that my blood titer (taken Aug when ds was born) showed ZERO immunity.  She wanted me to come get the shot.  I asked if it would do me any good if the actuall pox in my late teens did no good.  She said it was my call, I chose not to do the shot.
Anyone have experience with this?

No chicken pox here.   Sad that he didn't break out,  Smiley that I don't have to worry about my reoccurance.  This tells me that I did pass immunity on to my little guy via nursing, and that I am still immune to be able to do so.

Hi all!  This is my first time posting, so bear with me!  I've skimmed most of the responses here, but thought I'd ask my question anyway.

We have the chance to be exposed to CP right now.  For my daughter, I am all for it, as she is healthy has not been vacc'd for it.  My son was vaccinated for it at a year old.

Surprise, surprise...  Pretty sure the vaccs and antibiotics I blindly allowed for my son have affected him.  We are on a GFCF diet, among other things, getting ready to look at mega-doses of Vitamin A, etc...  (I prefer not to call him autistic...he's dietarily challenged!!! Smiley)

Anyway, does anyone know how a child who has been vacc'd that has an already compromised immune system would react to the chicken pox?  I'm more worried about shingles, really.

Honestly, any info would be great.  Thanks!

My sis "gave" the CP to a family she babysits for, when her own three children had it this last January. The family had one girl that I know for sure had the vax, and she still came down with the pox, but in a much milder form than her siblings.
I would think he has the chance of getting the pox, but not so bad??? At least from the experience I saw.

I got shingles a couple of years ago - over my shoulder and down my arm - I was very careful but I still passed chicken pox onto the kids (hard to avoid contact as I was nursing at the time). I am thankful now that I did and they got it over with. My youngest 3 had not been vaccinated, and my older 3 had been partially. The older ones were actually sicker than the younger ones (but that is usually the case with chicken pox).

This was Christmas time, and before we had broken out, we managed to pass on the CP to all the cousins (24 kids Roll Eyes). I was not very popular at the time (little did they know I was doing them a favor Grin). Some had been vaccinated, some not. Again, the oldest ones were the sickest. Two girls aged 8 and 5 had been completely vaccinated and they still caught mild cases (and then passed it on through their school Roll Eyes).

All because I had shingles Wink

I did take L. Lysine as soon as I realized I had shingles. I think it really helped limit it to a mild case - It was rather miserable but I only had to take Tylenol once.

Just wanted to post this "recipe" for shingles.

50% calophyllum oil
40% olive oil
10% Ravensara essential oil

Mix together and apply to the problem area.

I've never tried it myself (never had shingles), but I've heard that some people are having great success with it. If anyone tries it, I'd really be interested in hearing your experience with it.

Were on Day 3 of the chicken pox.....all 4 have it, for which I am very grateful!!

However, my 5 year old daughter has it the worst so far.  It has managed to get inside her labia and on the rest of her "inner parts".  She is miserable.  She wants to live in the oatmeal or baking soda baths but it's almost bed time.  She can't stand clothing at all.  I have had her drink a stronger than usual concentration of chamomile tea to help.

Huh I have some loose leaf lobelia on hand.  I've used it successfully on teething with our baby.  Could I make a poultice and put it on her like a little pad to relieve the irritation?

Any other ideas to help her out??

AllinHistime, you may be past the worst of this, but just in case it will help.... It seemed to help my boys with pox in the groin area to bandaid, cotton ball, tissue pack and otherwise prevent the pox from touching other skin. Change out frequently to keep it as dry as possible. Goldenseal powder helped heal those spots.

Thank you for your suggestions!  We made it through ok and yes, that night was the worst of it for my daughter.  My son who is older, got a little worse of a case but after a few days for him, the worst was over.

Everyone started healing about day 5.  My only concern is in my youngest.  She has an open sore still in her diaper area, along the crevice of her inner thigh, near her pubic bone.  It has yet to scab over since it seems to be such a humid area all the time.  Yet another reason to EC and not have baby in diapers!  Ugh, what I wish I would have known.  I've been packing it with goldenseal.  I also let her run around outside without a diaper and in the sun.  That helped the rest of them in the diaper region to heal but this one shows no sign of scabbing soon.

Ideas anyone?

Sorry Patti, I don't live out west Sad

10 Essential Herbs by Lalitha Thomas contains info about what she calls "people paste". Equal parts powdered comfrey, slippery elm, goldenseal & although I don't remember myrrh being in it I was trying to look up an on line quote about it since I don't have my book handy & someone has posted that myrrh is one of the ingredients as well. It would be good with or without the myrrh. So anyways, you mix it with water to make a paste & pack it into or on top of a wound, sore etc. It hardens & knits a wound together if it's packed in the wound or forms a crust over a wound or sore if it's applied on top. If it will stay put with where her sore is w/out rubbing & irritating any other skin in the area it should really help.

If you can't do that then try any of those same herbs you have that are very finely powdered & mix then to make an herbal dusting/baby powder. Esp if the slippery elm you can get is finely powdered. (I've seen it finely powdered, coarsely powdered, finely shredded & in matchstick size shred which is why I say that) If you happen to have it in caps that's usually the finely powdered kind & it wouldn't take much. Slippery elm is very soothing & mixed with drying, infection preventing goldenseal it's a great combo. Same with comfrey if you can get it finely powdered or if you can finely powder the leaves yourself. Calendula would be a great addition to this as well.
