I LOVE Wordpress.  It is free, you just need to find a host, (we use 1and1.com for our host).  You can do so much customizing with wordpress and there are so many different themes, (many of them free).  We did blogger for  a while, but found it VERY limiting. 

All this said, if you want to try it out and not have to pay anything out of pocket, go for Blogger which is completely free even for the host.

I've been with http://www.homeschoolblogger.com for a while and started not knowing anything about the whole blog thing.  They are very user friendly and I found it easy to teach myself how to do alot of the add-ons and even learn to write basic code.
I've tried setting up accounts and blogger and wordpress, but I also thought that homeschool had prettier backgrounds that you didn't have to alter.  If homeschooling happens to not describe you then homestead might... I believe that homesteadblogger is the sister site and seems very similar.

For some reason, this feels like a huge step to me.  I started my blog as a place to journal, vent, hide, etc, that was safely hidden and never shared.  Now it's become the go-to place for our family and friends to catch up with what's going on in our lives. Is there a way to add a gadget/widget that shows who is coming to your blog and how they got there (I have  seen them on several blogs) that I can see but everyone else can't? Like add it to my dashboard or something? Or is the only way to have one of those to put it on my page?

Check out google analytics.  It keeps track of your visitors, where they came from, and how often they visit.  We use it for our site and it's really neat.
