IMO, it depends on how much you take of RR. You just have to try it. I took RR capsules on and off a couple years ago as well as tea, but I recieved no relief from it. It was only when I took it long term that I saw a change.

I haven't tried the RRL for cramps, but from what I've read here, it sounds like the bilberry works a lot faster and better.

I have been diagnosed with endometriosis and although it has not been nearly as bad as it was two pregnancies ago (it was debilitating) it has not been so good lately. But I take some Bilberry capsules and in no time, my cramps are gone.

Has anyone else tried it since I posted about it? I am so curious if it's just me -like some quirk of my body chemistry, or something.

Well, I've been brewing a mix of Red Raspberry leaf, Nettle leaf and Mint into an iced tea for about 2 weeks now.  I probably drink about 2 quarts of it a day.  I have really heavy and painful periods and I'm hoping this will help.  I'll keep you posted. Thanks for the input.  Wink

I'm wondering if the bleach in the pads contributes to the painful peroids. When I switched to cloth, a wierd thing happened to the cloth pad. It bleached out in the middle where the blood was at.
Mine do this too, but I haven't the foggiest notion why.

My guess is that there are enzymes in the blood that are breaking down the dye. Good reason IMO to use at least white pads if not organic & unbleached. Just my .02. Blessings ~herbalmom

I don't have painful cramps anymore, I can just barely move to do anything the first day or two. And my emotions are extremely out of whack.  So.... I've been looking, I think I remember reading in either NGJ or Beeyoutiful's cat. an article about some herb or bottle of something that the mom writing said she always wanted to have on hand to pass out to young girls and their moms having trouble with their periods.  Am I making any sense?  (My brain goes fussy at the start of my monthly also.)

Do any of you remember this article? Was it taking about RR?

Do you have any help for disabling fatigue during periods?
Thanks.

For those who are trying to kick-start or balance their cycles, wanting to balance hormones, correct painful cycles, etc. here is a no-cost way to help things along.
Honoring Our Cycles, page 50 (Katie Singer, 2006, ISBN: 0-9670897-6-X)
Quote
To be healthy, we need sunlight during the day and darkness at night. Some women who do not ovulate regularly or who have difficulty getting pregnant and keeping pregnant have found that night lighting affects their cycles.

Usually, a woman needs to sleep in complete darkness -- except around the days she ovulates. Sleeping in complete darkness means that 15 minutes after you turn offyour bedroom light, you can not see your hand in front of your face. Getting your room totally dark takes time and attention. You might cover your window one night and the crack under the door the next. While it may take several months, healthier cycles often result.

. . . If you need light in the middle of the night (in the bathroom or while nursing), use dim light. You can buy a red bulb (like those used in a photographer's darkroom) from a camera store. . . .

To support healthy cycles, sleep in complete darkness. Then:
  • After you have two days of wetness, [Edit note: refers to v*ginal sensation when checked after urination] on the night of the second day, sleep with a light on in your foom for three nights. Or, keep a light on in a nearby room and keep its door open. After three nights with light, go back to sleeping in darkness for the rest of your cycle.
  • If you are not ovulating and have not bled for a month or longer, first sleep in completee darkness for 12 days. Then sleep with a light on for the next three nights. Then go back to sleeping in darkness for two weeks. Continue with this pattern to encourage healthy, ovulatory cycles.
  • Once you are pregnant, sleeping in complete darkness can help you keep a healthy pregnancy. After your baby is born, sleep in complete darkness until you are ready to ovulate again.

Here are a couple of additional web sites with articles on fertility/ovulation and the affect of light at night:

EMMA I went on the Pill when I was 17 to regulate my cycles, because they were so long and far apart. By the time I was 18 (and still on the Pill), my cramps were very intense on days that I bles. When I was 23, I learned I had endometriosis. For 12 years, I kept taking the Pill. Then I stopped taking it and tried sleeping in darkness except around the days I ovulate. I have been amazed! For five months, I have ovulated within two days of sleeping with light. I feel healthier than I have in years.

I searched everywhere, but couldn't find any thread on this topic.  I thought I had seen one in the past, but can't find it now. Undecided

Here is my problem.  I just started yesterday and I am having a really heavy one.  I am having lots of cramping in my lower back and in my lower abdomen.  I also got a migraine last night.  I was do to start for a couple more weeks.  This is the worst cycle I have had in a long time.  Does anyone know why it might be like this?  I don't know where to start and if there is something I need to do/take to fix this.  One more thing, I don't know if it matters or not, but I did run out of my SuperMom's about a week ago and haven't got more yet. Try taking a good dose of Billberry. It never fails to help me feel better during a bad period. Other than that, you'll probably find answers in the thread HB posted.

I think this is the most appropriate thread for this...Huh

I was just reading about estrogen/progesterone and liver health in my Rosemary Gladstar's Family Herbal (from a section for women):

"Treat the Liver First:  A central problem in many types of menstrual disorders is an imbalance in the levels of estrogen and progesterone.  The imbalance can have many sources, sometimes involving serious physiological disorders.  Many times, however, an imbalance arises b/c the hormones are not properly eliminated from the system.  Normally, estrogen and progesterone are broken down in the liver and sent as waste products to the kidneys for excretion.  If the liver is not functioning well, hormones are not processed effectively, and disorders result.  Most hormonal imbalances respond to a diet that supports the healthy function of the liver."

In many of her treatment for menstrual-related disorders, she has herbs to assist the liver.  Interesting.

can anyone tell me what would be off for someone (16 yo) to have really long cycles?  40-50 days usually i think.  mine are really short, hers are too long and very painful.  as a side note, she had unusually heavy bleeeding this month and pain, took 1 or 2 droppers of Dr. Schulze Fem + for 2 days and it settled everything right down.  no pain, normal bleeding.  i wonder if taking that on the day she should start (28) would bring on her period for a normal cycle.  has anyone tried it?

4myhoonie - if you try this and it works please let me know.

I take milk thistle capsules for my liver as well as dandelion root in tea, RRL tea frequently, Chaste tree berry capsules (twice daily for 3months then once daily for the last about 2 months per instructions on bottle), progesterone cream 1x daily from day 12 on, I avoid soy and my meat/dairy sources are primarily hormone free. Even with all of that my cycles are very irregular, 35-65 days. What am I missing? With all of that shouldn't my cycles be more regular?  Undecided

I am very frustrated and really want to be more regular. It doesn't seem like it can be healthy to cycle every other month. Oh, and I am only 28 if that makes a diff. and I weaned my 3rd between 5-6 months ago.

I would appreciate any input. TIA!

i don't know if i will get a chance, since it's not my cycle, i am not exactly sure where she's at.  she's only 16 so is not too concerned about writing it down.  anyway, dr Schulze's fem + has worked for everything we've tried it for, and it's not very expensive if it works!  so give it a go!   Wink

O.k., I have not been able to order any of the fem+ yet but I have another question. I listed above what I have been taking but I am noticing that every month my PMS is worse. This month I have bre*st tenderness and have been sooooo hormonal. I am normally pretty even keel but find that I am, without warning or reason, getting VERY angry, weepy, or despondant. Sometimes I feel like I just can't keep going and I feel like there is no hope. I am plagued with lots of weird dreams and not sleeping well........... This all started about a week ago so I assume that my period will be starting any day. Do you all still think the fem+ would be the way to go? I just don't want to be missing something obvious. I am tired..............

This is not a cure, but for temporary relief of cramps/sorness, I have found that soaking in warm epsom salt water in the tub helps. I have done this when coming home from work, and it really has relieved me to the point of getting some needful sleep.

Hi JeggAngie  Smiley

I dont have any ideas for you to try. But I had very irregular periods and still managed to get preg twice without trying. I know that doesnt help you any but I thought maybe it might encourage you to know that you can still get preg even with irregular periods.

I was so irregular that my period would come and go as it pleased whenever it wanted, 2 a month, 1 a month, skip a month and so on.

JeffAngie,

You need to get your progesterone checked.  You are likely low.  Messed up cycles are usually a symptom of not enough progesterone.  There is a thread on here about progesterone.  Read through it.

My last(current?) cycle is rather odd, I have never had anything like this before. My cycle seemed quite normal, except my temperatures were slightly more erratic than ever before. On day 31 I started what I thought was my period, but it was only 1 day of a tiny bit of red, and then for the rest of that day and the next 3 days, just some either pink or brown when wiping. Then yesterday (6 days after starting what I thought was my period) I had a clot of red, and even today have a tiny amount of pink or brown when wiping. This is totally not like me and I am so afraid it might be PCOS because of my erratic temps before! Anyone know of anything else that could cause this?

I was told by a doc that the brown blood means that it is old blood that has been hanging out in there for a little while. Endometrosis would contribute to that. It did for me anyways.

What is Endometrosis?

I suppose there is a possibility, but seeing as how I haven't gotten pregnant in 2 1/2 years we've been married, it seems somewhat unlikely.

I seem to have more flow today, bright red, and more than in the past. Still no cramps, and nothing "period" feeling.

ENDOMETREOSIS:

From my understanding of it is is caused by several things hormones and aging being one of them. It is when the lining of the uterus grows outside of the uterus and spreads onto the outside of the uterus and onto other surrounding organs.

The extra uterine lining tissue will also get real thick and clog up the fallopian tubes thus preventing  conception  or making it hard because the sperm cant hardly fight its way threw all that tissue to get up the fallopian tubes to get to the egg.

The tissue also can make it self bleed at any time of the month and sometimes holds onto old blood and lets it come out whenever. Some women have pain with endometrosis and some dont.

My endometreosis was so bad that herbs and trying to fix the hormones did not help but I have heard of other women getting it under control once they get their hormones back in order.
