I made DH take the leftover marshmallows, powdered sugar, brown sugar, and white sugar to work to get rid of.  He also took the leftover Tootsie rolls I had from my booth at the fair (that dreadful fair caused me to fall of the wagon).   Undecided

Way to go!  It's the stuff hanging around the house that is REALLY tempting!
Buy some round steaks and make some beef jerkey and have some nuts on hand to snack on when the cravings hit.  It will help.  If you're not allergic to dairy, keep some block cheese handy for snacking on as well.  Cream cheese smeared on just about anything is a treat - so you could make some tortillias and keep them handy for a jerky, cheese roll-up.  I know this stuff sounds pretty weird, but I snack like this when I need to and it really takes the carb cravings away.  Oh, peanuts with sharp cheddar is really good too....mmmmmm.

These are some interesting ideas. I'll have to try some on them.

Another thing that helps me is dehydrated bananas.  They taste sweet but are good for you.   I recently read that bananas are the best fruit for blood sugar.  They don't give the same "lift and drop" that most fruits (and sugars, of course) do.  They also take a long time to chew, so you feel like you are eating more than you really are.  I often eat them an hour or so before a meal, cause they really help me wait, and help keep me from overdoing it when I do eat because I am not starving.

I am going shopping today so I will definitely stock up on cheeses.  Hubby doesn't like bought beef so we will have to wait on him to get a few deer to make jerky.  We like jerky but unless he gets at least three deer we don't have extra to use.  Last year he only got one and it ran out a long time ago so we eat wild turkey, home grown chickens, and veggie pizza.  He keeps on me about going hunting with him to double our chances but deer hunting has been boring to me in the past but I suppose if we need the meat I will get out there (besides there is no sugar temptation in the tree stand  Grin).  I need to tackle the tortillas soon and I want to try the graham cracker recipe too.

I was wondering if the honey I buy at the grocery store is really "pure" , no other ingredients listed. Do you get yours raw? and where should I get it from?

My family and I are venturing into week 2 of the no-sugar diet. The last two nights I've had awful headaches, I was assuming this is sugar-withdrawals??? Blech! Or maybe the sweet tea we've lived off of my whole life Embarrassed I was wondering what alternatives to drinking tea do I have Huh, pretty much everything has sugar, even store bought juice.

My oldest son (7 at the time) went for probably a month with almost no sweets at all. He is usually the one with the biggest sweet tooth. One night my husband said "If you help me clean up the kitchen I'll let you have some ice cream" He's usually quick to help out, even for no treat, but especially for one, but he didn't even hesitate and said no. We just looked at each other shocked. Guess it's time to get the whole family going on this, seems the sugar cravings have been worse lately. Got some good ideas from reading this thread. I'm setting my goal for 2 weeks and then we'll see how it going from there. We'll start tomarrow if hubby agrees Smiley.

I struggle with sugar, too, although it is in a much more natural form: home-made breads, cookies, raw sugar, maple syrup and honey, and fruit.  To get yourself off the refined, really bad for you sugars, a minimum of 2 weeks is needed in which you touch NOTHING with those sugars in it.  The first week is unbvearable, the next you feel you can live without it, after a month, the smell of pastries etc made with garbage actually stinks to you and tastes bad.  We are all dairy intolerant, so I use rice, sheep and goat cheese in place of dairy.  No, it's not quite the same, but I've come up with some yummy concoctions.  I think the thing I miss the most is Ben and Jerry's icecream.   Wink  When you have that creamy fat craving, try water buffalo yogurt.  It is the richest, most satisfying non-dairy things I've found, and it doesn't taste like your face is buried in GOAT!  Cheesy

In most cases your body does not crave sugar.  The candida living in your body craves it for you.  Once you've cleaned your body out the sugar cravings are gone.  The only thing that remains is the desire for something yummy, but most of what you're used to tolerating that is rich and sweet won't taste as good as you remember once the candida are gone.
SOOO TRUE! This is our experience... Every once in awhile we eat a desert away from home that we used to love and we look at each other just to say 'This is gross!!! How did we ever think it was good."

When we quit sugar I would drink a big glass of water every time a craving hit. At first it would make me feel  nauseous but after a week or so the water made me feel better immediately. Hang in there all you gals and guys. It has been over three years and now I can even leave the dark chocolate alone Wink

I went off of sugar at the beginning of August and stayed off until mid-sept when we had a serious health scare with my 3 year old.  We thought that she had leukemia.  I am very much an emotional eater and I fell of the wagon for about a month until my daughter was pronounced healthy - just a freak infection.  I have been back on the wagon for about 10 days now.  I feel SO much better when I am off of sugar.  I have more energy, I'm happier, less irritable.  I just feel like a different person.  It makes me ask myself why do I struggle with this?  Let's see which do I want a big bowl of ice cream and a lousy day or two, or a smoothie and a great day?  I wish that I could say that all cravings leave me after a couple of weeks, but so far that hasn't been the case for me.  Maybe when I am not nursing or pregnant and I can do a more thourough job of cleansing for yeast.

I just had to post on here when I saw this!!! I am defiently hooked on sugar EVEN though I have had any since Nov. 06. Well I say none, I've had 2 really small slices of cake and that was in Feb. and one in Mar. I have a 5 pound bag of sugar that has been in my freezer now since Nov. Before I found out I was a diabetic, (in Nov.) I bought 10 pounds of sugar a month and we used it all. I am STILL fighting with this. I use Stevia, I eat bananas, apples, oranges, or satsumas but I STILL crave the stuff like mad! I'm wondering if I stay away from ANYTHING sweet, fruits stevia you name it, would that help me to stop these cravings!!! I eat the sugar free candy and can't get enough of that either. What's weird is, I used to not even want the stuff. My daughter and DH would laugh at me when I even drinked tea because I would get the tea in my glass but I would add water to it and when I got done adding the water it looked just like apple juice it was so weak. That's what they would tell me, it looked just like apple juice. Back then, I might have averaged baking ONE CAKE a year! BUt the past few years I made MANY more than that up until Nov. I have been trying to lose weight and have lost 98 pounds but lately it is getting MUCH harder to stick with it and I have no clue as to why. Since the weather has warmed up here I am working outside more and I feel like I need more to be able to do what I have to do. I need more energy I guess is what I am trying to say and so I am eating more food not sugar exactly but fruit and things like that. Which is a natural sugar. BUT it's making me gain weight. I printed out the prayer and am going to keep praying it and asking God for help in this area.

This has probably been posted, but protein will greatly help sugar cravings.  A hard boiled egg with paprika sprinkled on always helps for me  Smiley.  Also, I have heard that rinsing your mouth out with baking soda and water helps.  Worth a try!  Also, if you do indulge, brush your teeth afterward, to get that sugary taste out of your mouth.  That may help you not go to the fridge/pantry again for more, b/c you don't have the taste in your mouth anymore.  No more chocolate stuck in the molars! HTH!

One thing that has really helped me is to include coconut oil in my diet. A smoothie in the morning with coconut oil added really helps to kill that craving.

Can you elaborate on the Candida?  Huh I don't have a sweet tooth--I have a mouth full of sweet teeth.   Lips Sealed  The more I read, the worse I feel.  Crave sugar?  You betcha.  What's worse is I am teaching my boys to be the same way. Embarrassed

There's a mineral that's good to supplement with when you have sugar cravings...chromium.  It helps to stabilize the blood sugar levels.  It's usually a good idea to take it with meals.  Sometimes minerals can make you nauseus (sp?) if not taken with food.  This helps a lot of people, hope it helps you, too.  Another thing I have learned through the years is that people who CRAVE  Roll Eyes chocolate are usually deficient in magnesium.  HTH and maybe you can research it some more.  I have found out through personal experience that once you get off sugar, you don't crave it at all...actually you want to avoid it!   I think it's because it makes me feel bad for several days after I eat it.  Sad  Good luck.

Hi,
This is an old thread but I was hoping to revive it.  I am going crazy!  I had a baby May 7th and at the end of the pregnancy I was avoiding sweets (somewhat) because my heartburn was unbearable.  I have always craved sweets, physically and emotionally.  Well, the baby was born and I started treating myself.  I love to put the kids to bed and watch a video or read a book and have a treat, usually cookies or chocolate cake or something.  Well, after a couple weeks, I find I am wanting sweets all day long now.  I am desperate to get this baby weight off as there's nothing worse than feeling fat in the heat of summer.
I was wondering if anyone who was regularly posting on this thread last year has stuck with it? If so, what helped?
Also, I was wondering if anyone was in the same place I am right now and interested in a little accountability?  Just short, daily PM's at night to share how we did.  I have conquered sugar several times and lost weight and had abundant energy.  I need that right now.
I plan to try to eat protien instead of sugar when a craving hits, stop buying sweets with groceries, take TTU and other supplements (any recommendations?).

I have this same problem only mine is with drinking sugary pop.  After having my baby April 2006 I was doing pretty good because I was breastfeeding and didn't want the baby to have the caffeine, but after a few months I started having a pop once in a while and now I can't go a day without a pop and if we are out I will be into something sweet like cookies.  I would really like to stop drinking pop because it has made me gain like 10 pounds or more  Shocked in the last 6 months.  And I know that all the sugar and caffeine is bad for me.  Sugar is a hard thing to stop, it is very addicting.  It is so funny that this post would come up today.  I was just thinking this morning to get on WTM and see if there was any threads on this subject.

It is so funny that this post would come up today.  I was just thinking this morning to get on WTM and see if there was any threads on this subject.

It must be something in the air.  I was thinking this exact thing today also.  I sat here and read through the whole thread.  Only bad thing is, all that reading about sugar made me want some, so I went and made some chocolate milk  Embarrassed.  I am 22 weeks pregnant, and would like to drop the sugar (candy and soda mostly), for me and the baby.

It is good to know that I am not the only one who craves sugar this way.  My sister and I were trying to be accountable to each other about what we are eating (we are both pregnant), but we both had a bad (read:  cheating) weekend a while ago and stopped.

I know, for me especially, it has to be all or nothing.  I can't just limit my sugar intake.  I have to stop it completely.  I get really discouraged, though, because I do so good for a while, and then I mess up once, and it's like I never started in the first place.  I'm that way with anything, whether it's not eating sugar, drinking more water, eating healthier, exercising more.  I've got no staying power.  As my DH said the other day "You always do really good...for a while."  It's very frustrating.

I too would like to hear from some folks who have stuck with this.  Does it really get easier when you get past the first few weeks?  What about after the first few months?

Okay, sorry for rambling.  I really need to go to bed soon....

the-beth I can completely understand.  I am totally the same.  It has to be all or nothing for me too.  I have tried to taper off like I let myself have a pop or candy bar every other day and then try to go every third day etc. but it never lasts more than a few weeks and then I am right back to having 2-3 a day Angry I get so upset with myself because I have absolutely no will power in this area.  I am also glad to hear I am not alone and look forward to any suggestions or encouraging advise.

I went "no sugar" about 5 yrs ago and I don't miss(and don't crave it)  at all.  I started with the "atkins" approach after having my second baby.  I dropped about 20 pounds over 3 months doing this and wasn't really hungry b/c of the protein I guess.  I don't keep any sugar-loaded stuff in the house except honey.  I am a diabetic and so is my husband.  I had to plan ahead and lower my insulin and plan my carbs BEFORE I started that way I wouldn't be dealing with low blood sugars.  I guess at first you miss the habit of sugary stuff(I went no grains too.)  I would guess if you maybe counted carbs(and kept them low, and up your protein) at first that would stabilized your blood sugars, then slowly added some healthy carbs, you might be able to get "over the cravings hump."

*Sigh* I'm here too.... Tongue There IS something in the air, because tomorrow I am starting no sugar, amongst other things. (I'm going to do my best at following the Maker's Diet for a week, Phase 1).  I'm not so strict that I won't consume one thing that may have sugar for an ingredient, (like crackers, or something), but I really want to elminate all the excess sugar in my diet.  It's not fun. But, I've done it before, so I know I can do it again!! Smiley  I've found that if I can just get busy with other things of life, and not focus on the fact that I can't have sugar, it goes easier.  I'd like to be accountable here, though! Wink

I'm glad to find some others out there.  Maybe whoever wants can just check in on this thread.  I will start.  I did really good yesterday. I had no refined sugar after my post in the afternoon.  I did get my usual sweet cravings after dinner and at bed time. I had a honey sweetened fudgesicle and some cherries.  I have also read this whole thread and Health Bratt really encourages avoiding sweets altogether, even healthy ones, I can see the wisdom in that but I don't think I'm up to it yet.  I also had a sweet potato yesterday and I think that was helpful.  We'll see how today goes.
Oh, and Tiffany, I used to drink several Pepsi's a day from the time I was in Jr. High until 8 years or so ago.  After I got married (13 years ago) I gained a lot of wieght (I'm sure some of that had to do with the birth control pill  Tongue).  I went on a  program called  Prism (I called it "prison" Grin ) and I cut out sugar completely.  I thought soda would be the hardest thing to get rid of.  I was very surprised how easy it was.  I had a much harder time with bread.  Since then, I've had a few Root Beers but I haven't so much as craved soda even once since the day I got rid of it.  I have taken a sip of a Pepsi out of curiosity and find it repulsive.  I hope that is encouraging.  Oh and I lost 65 lbs and kept it off for 2 years when I got pregnant!  Other than in pregnancy, I haven't weighed that much since!

If you're really having trouble, then eliminate one food or food group at a time.

I started with sodas.  Once I had them conquered, I moved on to other things.  I think after that, I conquered the urge to eat sweets I didn't even really like just because hubby bought them.  After that, I began eliminating the sweets I did like.  I just flat out, didn't buy the ones I didn't have to (hubby Wink) and then he eventually began to follow suit.  He gave up Little Debbies Wink  This took place over a period of a couple of years, BUT if you're struggling with excessive yeast and the symptoms that accompany it, I wouldn't recommend you wait that long.

If you feel you need to "cold turkey", then just don't buy the stuff for at least 2 weeks (maybe a month) and eat peanut butter, and other proteins and omega 3 fats to help your cravings.  If you MUST cheat, eat unsweetened or very lightly sweetened chocolate.  This will sometimes help beat those sugary cravings.

hhmom-thanks for the encouraging post.  When I went grocery shopping I didn't boy any pop this time.  I am going to give this a good shot.  I really don't want my children to drink any pop and have not let them up to this point, but my oldest is 4 1/2 and is starting to ask for it.  I sure don't want to be telling her no and drinking it myself.

If you're really having trouble, then eliminate one food or food group at a time.

I'm thinking this might be the way to go for me.  One at a time.  Well, maybe two.  Soda and candy would have to be the two big ones.

I did find (for the week I was really good) that when I was eating a lot of protein that I didn't crave sweets at all.  But it is hard (at least around here) to buy a cheap protein snack when low on money (meaning after the groceries ran out, before payday, when I only had a couple bucks on me).  It is much cheaper to buy a can of soda and a roll of Bottle Caps (my weakness...).  In fact, today I was going to try to go low/no sugar.  Then I saw the Snickers bar I left at work last Friday.  So I had to eat that.  When I got home I told my DH "Don't let me have any soda."  I was good and had two glasses of water with dinner.  But now he is at a softball game, and I am drinking a Coke.  *sigh*

Anyway.  I really do need to make an effort to keep lots of protein around.  Especially meats, which seem to have the most effect on me.  When I try to do nuts and eggs and things, I don't seem to notice as much as if I have some turkey or something.

Anyway.  I have to start thinking about a grocery list here soon, so I will be sure to put lots of high protein/low sugar things on there.

Okay, enough.  I've rambled long enough.  Have to go clean out the fridge now...
