But what about chocolate?!  My husband and kiddies don't eat anything that isn't naturally sweetened (fruits, etc.) but I've developed a habit of eating dark chocolate to unwind.
Do a google on chocolate and antioxidents and another one on chocolate and magnesium.  You might be pleasantly surprised at what you find.  One thing in chocolate that might be of concern would be the ingredients in it besides cocoa.  Soybeans, hydrogenated oils, etc.  Otherwise, dark chocolate (in my opinion) isn't a bad way to satisfy a sweet tooth.  Grin

I finally admitted this to my husband.... I am addicted to sugar.....  And I mean, really addicted.  When a craving hits, I can really pack it in Lips Sealed.  One habit I had was taking a bowl and scoping in a bunch of brown sugar.  Then I added some butter, cream cheese, and a tad of milk.  I microwaved that intil it turned into a carmel-like consistency.  Then I would eat it all.  During "that time of the month" I would sometimes do it several times a day... Undecided

That time of the month is quickly approaching.  Last week I asked my dh to tell me that I couldn;t have any sugar for 2 weeks.  He gladly complied! Wink  Its been 6 days.  I haven't cheated, but I am about to go crazy Shocked.

Do you guys have any alternative "sugar fixes" that would help tame the cravings, but not defeat the purpose?

I am DETERMINED to break this addiction.  And it won't be easy.  We are going to visit my parents in a couple of weeks, and my mom loves to make me all kinds of desserts.  That will be so hard.  I am considering talking to her ahead of time, and asking her not to.   My dad wouldn't be very happy about that.

I highly suspect that I am hypoglycemic.  We are going to try to get me tested before we go, that way I can tell my parents that the doctor said that I couldn't have any suger.  This is one of the reasons that feel such a big need to break my sugar addiction.

Keep trucking....it is hard, it seems like you may need to cleanse for yeast before you will see all of your cravings to away.  I do know though that the longer you stick with it the less you will crave sugar.

I also know that once you give in the first time it is VERY hard to get back to the no sugar rule.  I am living proof of that fact.  I know you can do it Smiley

I think so too, only money is just too tight right now.  We are moving, and my husband ends one job, and doesn't ahve another one lined up yet.  I plan to buy YA and TT with my Christmas money from grandparents Wink.

Okay, this is totally not going to be helpful, but I would bake no bakes cookies and not add quite all the oatmeal and eat the whole batch while my family was gone.  Ew, is that called binging or closet eating?  I was eating it all to save them from it...... Embarrassed I haven't done that in months though. It was right after the baby was born.  I did it twice.

You can cleanse for yeast without suplements.  Just keep on without the sugars and have some good plain yogurt and you will definitely make some progress Smiley  Also, it is no tummy tuneup, but you can usually get some acidophilous at the drugstore for less than $5 a bottle.  But if not, following a low carb diet, and eating plain yogurt is a good way to help make the yeasties go away.

Ok, and since we are all posting our vices.... ihave been eating fig newtons like a madwoman this week.  It is like I can't control myself with those around.

Tip for sticking with it: NEVER shop at the grocery store on an empty stomach. It keeps you from buying compulsively.

Also, throw AWAY any sugar you have around the house.

Tip for lessening the craving: Eat bananas, or another kind of fruit. Apples are coming into season, as are oranges. Peel/cut/slice your fruit onto a pretty plate, arranged w/ a piece of your favorite cheese and maybe a few nuts. Make it pretty to look at, enjoyable to eat, and let it be a true treat.

Sweet potatoes (especially this time of year) are rich and sweet and yummy!

Tip for helping your head aches/nervousness/lack of energy: Drink a peppermint leaf tea or spearmint leaf tea sweetened with real honey.

Also, you could steep Cinnamon sticks to make a cinnamon tea, adding a few drops of orange essential oil if you have it. Sweeten with real honey.

Also, take Spirulina.

Tip for BEATING this addiction: "Dear Lord, I thank you so much that my flesh is crucified with Christ, and even though my body is craving sugar, I do not have to obey the lusts of the flesh. I am not a slave to my body, and I belong to you. I thank you for dying for me and saving me from a life of giving into my body's desires. I thank you that I will break this addiction and live a healthier, more free life. In Jesus name, amen."

oh do I feel for you.  Embarrassed I was THEE sugar addict for a number of years.  I  know people don't agree, but the Atkins diet worked for me.  Lots of protein, low glycemic veggies and after awhile berries and canteloupe, nuts and seeds, too.  Not to mention my hair became nicer with the "ok to use fats" mentality...which was a nice plus.

UGH!  It's trickier to do it with a really tight budget.  I've been struggling with this myself, too lately.  I'm not hooked on the sugar like before, but I definitely have some weight to kick.  Anyhow, it's good to kick the yeast with a similar diet if not this exact one.  To do that you wouldn't have to be quite as strict.

I think you are so cute asking your dh to tell you that you can't have it.  I used to think I was the only one who did stuff like that....LOL Cheesy

Anyhow I am looking forward to others ideas and suggestions and I will pray for you, I know it's a struggle.

I don't know if it would set you back or not but I do have a carob cookie reicpe that is good and oatmeal. I would like your recipe if it won't tempt you too much to get it out.  Smiley  I don't really know how I "kicked" mine.  I guess b/c we are doing a pretty strict diet for my son so of course we are all eating better.  I might actually lose some weight if I didn't eat off limits stuff when he isn't around.  Roll Eyes

If it were me, I wouldn't substitute anything for your sugar.  Just keep biting the bullet until you're sure you don't need sweets anymore.  When you finally do eat something sweet, it will be either too sweet to eat at all, or you'll want less of it before you're satisfied.

You could use Stevia which is not a sugar and it's natural, BUT I warn you that this can make your "withdrawals" worse if you're going cold turkey.  Your body will taste the "sweet" and get ready for the sugar to come down the pipes and "tricked you" no sugar.  Your body won't like it and you'll crave the sugar even more than you did before you ate the stevia.  I know this isn't what you wanted to hear, but I would say after at least another week (maybe 3) you'll be cured.

A friend of mine went off sugar for a while and when she was really craving it she'd eat a peice of cheese or something else with tons of protien, like nuts, or nut butter, some meat and the craving would dissipate.

Ok. Pennie, I'll try to get the recipe out sometime.  If I can find it.  I was going to pack my cookbooks today.  I can't be too tempted to try it now, cause some of the ingrediants that I need are already moved to the new house.  Its nice to have a good excuse, sometimes! Wink

I went to pack my cookbooks, and I remembered that I forgot to send you this!

1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup water
1/3 cup carob powder
(you can replace the water and carob for 2 oz chocolate)

Mix in saucepan on low till butter melts, and then bring to a boil.  Boil one-two minutes.

Romove from heat.  Add
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1/2 cup peanut butter (optional, but I wouldn't consider omitting it!)
- 3 cups oats

Mix well after adding each ingrediant.  Drop by spoonful onto wax paper.  Chill.

Optional add-ins

1/2 cup nuts or seeds
1/2-1 cup coconut

Absolutely delicious!  I ate a ton of these when I was pregnant and losing weight.  It helped!  They were one of the few things I could actually get down.

Now I am getting tempted.   I won't, I won't,  I won't!!! Lips Sealed

After reading Sugar Blues by William Dufty I'm afraid to give my family any sugar.  I know people are substituting honey for refined sugar, but what about regular stuff like salad dressing?  I am making everything from scratch and there are some dressing recipes that my fam is just not going to like, but I don't want to give them high fructose corn syrup.  Or what about the holidays and good ol sugar cookie baking time?  Do you all stick to complete sugar free diets?  My husband thinks I'm going looney!!!

My philosophy is all things in moderation.  When we choose to have sugar I TRY (note the word TRY) to make it as unrefined as possible.

My kids keep me accountable now. I am a definate Sugar Addict. But I've been raising my kids to understand that Sugar is poison. So now, My son (5 years old)...... will tell me...Mommy..doesn't that have sugar in it? - - I guiltily say...ummm yes honey....then he replies... then why are you eating it mommy?Huh

GULP.

That helps me cut back my sugar binges!!!!!

As for the holiday season if you goggle for it, you can find tons of pies , desserts and cookies that are made with healthy sweeteners and honey.

I have a great recipe (at least I think it's great) for a sweet salad dressing made with honey:

3/4 c. honey
2 tbsp. salad oil (I use olive oil)
2 tbsp. lemon juice
1 tsp. paprika
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. celery seed
1/4 tsp. minced onion
1/8 tsp. dry mustard

Shake it up in a jar and you're good to go. The flavors are better if you let it sit for a bit first, though.  Smiley

Augh.... Today I was offered a homeade chocolate resses pieces chunk cookie.  They are the absolute best cookie!  Talk about temptation!

I didn't yield!  It was so hard, but when I left, I knew that if i could turn that down, I could turn anything down!  Yeah!  Maybe I am making a breakthrough with my sugar addiction. I have made it 7 days, so far.

Next week I am going to test for hypoglycemia.  We'll see how that goes.  If it is positive, and I am almost sure that it is, there goes my sugar for good....

I recently tested "sensitive" to many forms of sugar.... beet sugar, cane sugar and fructose. I find that if I avoid the foods I'm sensitive to, I hardly have food cravings, and, for the most part, my symptoms of low blood sugar stay gone.

I'm basically only using rice syrup and a little honey for sweetners and it's working pretty well.

I noticed people mention making pancakes with honey and in another thread a mom mentioned that she made pancakes for her son who was on a yeast fighting diet.  What do you put on these pancakes?  We put pure maple syrup but I need to cut out all sugars to aggressively fight my yeast problems.  I haven't had success going completely cold turkey (no grains, sugar or fruit), so I plan to do very small amounts of honey and whole wheat and little or no fruit.

We were doing good on phase 3 of the Maker's Diet until we spent the weekend at the local fair and ate fried pork burgers, fried Snickers, and fried funnel cakes.  Shocked We keep starting over but by the weekend some other excuse presents itself.  We went camping for the first time with the kids this weekend and you have to have smores and hot chocolate with marsmallows, especially when the nights are in the 30s.  Grin  I can't see any excuses in our future until Thanksgiving and we usually spend that with DH's folks and they are on a vegan diet to treat cancer.  So here we go again.  Maybe us sugar addicts need a thread to encourage each other daily to beat this thing.  Smiley

mexmarr, thanks for the pointing me to the support group.  Smiley  I am starting afresh today.  This time of breaking the sugar habit will be harder because my hubby is back at school now.  When I went two + weeks in August without sugar, he was home and held me accountable.  Since I backslided in September and he is at school I made a 1/4 recipe of chocolate fudge icing to eat myself and then the last two days I have managed to finish off the two extra (1/2 pound) Hershey bars that we had bought for our camping trip smores.  Shocked  But after reading this thread I am ready to dig in again.  I made DH take the leftover marshmallows, powdered sugar, brown sugar, and white sugar to work to get rid of.  He also took the leftover Tootsie rolls I had from my booth at the fair (that dreadful fair caused me to fall of the wagon).   Undecided  He kept asking me if I was sure about the baking sugars and I told him we had not used them at all (except for my bowl of icing  Embarrassed) to bake with.  I have successfully used honey for any sweets we did have.  So I don't need to change my cooking habits, just my eating habits when I think no one is watching.  Roll Eyes
