I need gift ideas for my husband's two bosses.  In the past we have gotten them Leatherman knives, gift cards, and various other things.
Would it be weird to get them each a filet of beef?  Being that we live in a suburb of NYC it is not typical to buy other people meat, but I figure people enjoy a filet mignon dinner no matter where they live, right?  Be honest please so I don't make a fool of my husband.  ~L

I don't think I would wrap up a cut of meat from the super market...that might be kind of odd (knowing that's not what you meant...just teasing!) Grin  A company that ships good cuts of steak, like Omaha Steaks are a great choice.  They come cryo-packed, and ship right to their home.  It's one of the few things that my Step Dad really and truly enjoys as a gift.  So, no...I don't think it's an odd gift.  Certainly not on par with the jelly of the month club.  Grin

Here's another good one for a guy who likes to sample beer:  World Market sells sampler packs of different types of handcrafted beers.  We get that, and a unique mug for my stepdad every year, and he loves it!

We're planning on giving beef jerky/fruit leather/homemade candies/cracker jacks etc. to the adults, and for the kids, my son is making marshmallow guns. Very simple!
I like getting baskets of cleaners, toothpaste/brush, etc, so I may do that as well for a few.

I need some ideas.I have 7 nieces and nephews. They all draw names between them but since DH and I have no children yet we like to bless each with a small gift.
I am going to make these hats for the three girls.I did a trial one and it was rather easy.
Here is the link if anyone is interested http://www.marthastewart.com/article/woolen-beret?autonomy_kw=woolen%20beret&rsc=header_1
I am going to make them out of some extra light blue fleece I found.
But I need some ideas for the boys I was hoping to make them something.
I do not want to buy them something because I think it would be unfair to the girls and none of them need another toy.( the boys are 5,9,9,10)
  So bring on the ideas!

Potato guns outlawed?  Must have been in the legislation that outlawed common sense.

Another thing about giving marshmallow guns for gifts is that you can give bags of "ammo" as gifts later.

Thanks for the reminder, MJ...Kiss   I am keeping up on the thread.  Cheesy

Went to a cool craft show today and got lots of ideas for someday when I have time to make things... Roll Eyes

Gourmet apples (like caramel apples)...Granny Smith's drizzled w/ caramel, white and dark chocolate...some sprinkled.  Wrapped in pretty cellophane...lovely.

Homemade dog biscuit treats in cookie cutter shapes (chicken, beef and PB).

Up here, mittens made from recycled wool sweaters and sometimes lined w/ fleece and very popular (and useful).   Wink

Homemade soap bars made w/ 50% SALT.  Need to research these more.

The most DARLING set of stuffed, feminine fabric blocks for babies.

And of course...the body scrubs, dried food mixes in jars...yummy chocolates...candles...

my wonderful, creative teen daughter is making "memory books".  she and her best girlfriend have been making them for a year or so, and writing in them like a diary.  they are beautiful, with pretty cloth and beads or buttons on the outside and come with a handkerchief and pocket sewn on the inside.  they may have a clasp if you like, but are more pretty without.  they are $10 each for a small one (5 x 6 1/2 in.), $15 for a large one (9 1/2" x 6 1/4").  they are really nice.

she also makes the small ones, a bit less fancy for a grocery list, Christmas list, etc. for $7 without a clasp, or $8 with a clasp.

she has been making "flax packs" for several years now, but is in the process of changing the sizes, so will post sizes and prices soon!  she is busy getting ready for a craft show Wednesday, so it will be soon after that.  pm me for orders, we don't have the etsy shop set up yet!

Sorry, I just reread over this, here is our directions: (Tried to load a picture, but wouldn't load, google marshmallow gun and you will see what they look like. After you cut pieces of pipe you can see what lengths should go where. My son (10yrs old) and his dad made 7 guns in about 3 hours. Cost was approximately $4 each. We also plan to lightly sand the pipes and spray paint (green or pink) so that will be a little extra cost. If you have questions, pm me.

This little guy can shoot mini-marshallows 15-20 feet with pretty good accuracy!
A great gizmo for indoor target practice on rainy days.
Do not shoot at people or animals, of course!

To build your own Marshmallow Gun (or "Shooter" or "Launcher")...
You can purchase the materials at your local hardware store for a couple of bucks, and reuse the marshmallows before they become sticky.
If you don't have pvc pipe cutters, they are worth the investment for about $10. You can use a hack saw if you need, just be sure to clean out the little filings.
Materials:
1/2" PVC pipe of the following sizes:
(1) 9"
(1) 7"
(2) 4"
(2) 2"
(1) 3"
(2) 90 degree elbows
(2) T's
(2) caps

I'm looking for "homemaking" gift ideas for my 5 year old daughter. I'm having a hard time finding things that aren't too expensive but that will also catch her interest. I plan on buying her some kids sized cooking utensils (she already caught me looking at them on the Beautiful Girlhood website and was really excited). Any ideas?

Our 6-year-old was given a potholder loom for her birthday.  Once she got the hang of it, she loves to make the potholders.  The kit costs a little under $6, and then there's the cost of eventually getting more of the loops.  She's planning to make them for gifts this holiday season.

If you have a country store or odds and end store, they might have kitchen utensils.  They would be the real thing only smaller (child size).

How about crochet hooks, yarn and a "date with mama" coupon to teach her how to use them?

Also, you could fill a mason jar with ingredients for an easy recipe so that all she has to do is add eggs, water and mix.  Then she can say she made the treat by herself (except for putting it in the oven, of course.)

Maybe a kid-sized apron?

You could start some sewing crafts for her and leave enough for her to finish so that she thinks she did it herself.  (sew a few tubes out of fabric and cut the elastic to size so she can assemble hair scrunchies)

A laminated To Do list (printed at home with her favorite colors) that she can fill in and check off with a dry-erase marker so she is able to manage all of her homemaking efforts like mama.

My 5yo wasn't coordinated enough to manage crochet w/o frustration so we switched to yarn needles & plastic canvas  (hard plastic with holes in grid form in various shapes - traditional material for grannies to make kleenex box covers with).  She started making 'hot pads' for the play kitchen and then made a box out of 5 squares.  She uses it as a box for her yarn needles now and was making a box for Dad to put his keys and coins in next.... but we got distracted.

-A small real broom and dustpan...our hardware store sells them, and they're too cute!  Also, you could put a small feather duster, a job checklist, some safe vinegar spray cleaner, and a rag in a little bucket...it would be a Mommy's little helper kit! Smiley

-I have also gotten some great play kitchen 'real' dishes and such from the thrift store over the years.  I keep my eye out for small melmac bread plates, bowls, sugar dishes (cassaroles) and trays for toaster ovens (cookie sheets).

-The thrift store is also a great place to find dress ups...I've even found old bonnets and aprons there.

-I made my own version of 'easy bake' mixes for my daughter one year, and she loved it!  You can do cakes, cookies, and frosting mix...and just let them stir in the wet ingredients.

-the dollar tree (if you have one in your area) sells kids sized spatulas and cooking utensils...and the price is right! Wink

-look up chicken scratch embroidery.  It's like cross stitching on gingham, and it's cute and easy with a big ball point needle.  This is very cute on an apron or small tablecloth, and it works up fast.

-a set of menu magnets: days of the week, and then photos of favorite foods.  She can help you plan the menu. Wink

-an old fashioned wash set.  A clothes line, clothes pin, a box of soap flakes, and a bucket...for washing up doll clothes. Smiley

  Ode to plastic cavas....
On that note, my mom did plastic canvas all when we were growing up.  THere was not a person in our church that didn't receive some home made item from her at some point.  She also made plastic canvas play food and dishes including a plastic canvas mixer and silverwear for us.  SHe made hundreds of things.
SHe made me and 2 of my sisters a doll house which looks like a box with a handle with  our names on it done beautifully and the box opens into a full barbie (we couldn't have barbies, but same type of thing) doll house complete with drawers and plastic canvas hangers for the doll clothes in the closet, doll furniture, and everything fit inside the box perfectly.  She got doll clothes patterns from what scarlet O-hara wore in Gone with the wind and crocheted old-fashioned long dresses for our dolls with the sun hats and everything.  We had almost no money growing up, but my mommy made just about anything with her plastic canvas.
