I'm looking for "homemaking" gift ideas for my 5 year old daughter. I'm having a hard time finding things that aren't too expensive but that will also catch her interest. I plan on buying her some kids sized cooking utensils (she already caught me looking at them on the Beautiful Girlhood website and was really excited). Any ideas?
-A small real broom and dustpan...our hardware store sells them, and they're too cute!  Also, you could put a small feather duster, a job checklist, some safe vinegar spray cleaner, and a rag in a little bucket...it would be a Mommy's little helper kit! Smiley

I forgot about brooms and mops.  My kids love these and they help me sweep and mop the floor too. That would be a perfect gift for both of you. Wink

Walmart has a set of four weaving looms (different sizes) for about $12-$15. My 5 and 8yr.old sons made hats and scarves with it. Very simple and very fun!

I posted this on the Christmas Gift Ideas (KIDS) thread last year but it might be good on this thread as well. Here's a link for the other thread as well:

Christmas Gift Ideas (KIDS)

OK, this got me to thinking about several gifts we have given over the years. We stay away from twaddle of all kinds & want maximum value & use from our choices so many of our gifts for kids are not typical kids gifts.

Let's see what I can remember.

Several years ago we bought our kids some stainless steel camping cooking pans sets from WalMart. Something like this:

Mess Cook Set

but they were small pans for cooking for 1 person, they were stainless steel & the handles folded along side the pan when they are not being used. The stainless is too thin to do a decent job with real cooking but they make GREAT kids play pans. Even my boys played with them. We found them on clearance but they were originally something like $12 I think. We STILL have them & they are still going strong although now that my kids are older they get used only when kids visit or the kids need a container to put things in. I keep them though because they are one of those 'toys' that most ages can play with.

Another thing is the stainless steel tea pots that restaurants use for boiling water at the table for tea- they are sized well for little hands & don't break. I used to pick up the stainless restaurant tea pots, sugar bowls, cream pitchers, etc any time I found them at the thrift store & my kids, esp my DD loved them. They can be gotten new at restaurant supply stores. The little SS or plastic cups that WalMart & Target sell for tartar sauce, etc are good too & only about $1 for a set of 4. The kids used them for bowls, cups, etc. I once found SS coasters intended to go under a glass to protect a tale top that made fantastic little toy plates, esp for stuffed animal tea parties.  Plastic measuring cups & spoons are good- they are good for pretend kitchen play & make great bath toys as well. Funnels are good for bath toys as well.

A metal 9X13 baking pan with a lid or a plastic container with a lid & some white rice, cornmeal or millet makes a indoor "sandbox" that younger kids love. Many of the things mentioned above for both pretend kitchen play & bath toys work well in the indoor "sandbox".

Kids love cleaning tools & mechanical tools of their own. The special ones made for kids cost too much & don't hold up. We didn't buy too many "kids" tools, we would look at the proportion between adult & tool & look for something of similar proportion to the child. Overall, something that is small but made for adults is usually going to cost less & hold up better. DH once bought small camping shovels for the kids & they're still going strong 10 years later.

If your child ever helps with yard work or other jobs that work gloves would be good for Home Depot carries kids work gloves that are only a few dollars. The also carry kid's safety glasses for eye protection when working on projects. My kids were always helping dad with something  & LOVED it when they got work gloves & safety glasses of their own. Home Depot has kids size tool & work belts & pouches as well.

As far as cleaning tools if you compare an adult's height to a mop, the end of the mop comes to an adult's shoulder so we got a got a regular mop-the kind w/fabric strips that you can remove the head & throw in the washer- & shortened the handle to the shoulder height of the child. They loved it because the mop was just like mommy's & they could control it because it was proportioned to their height. Because the head could be replaced we didn't have to keep replacing the handle so the $ wasn't bad. A broom with a small head could be done the same way. We also bought the little whisk broom & dustpan sets for them to use for cleaning up spills. I'm talking about the little 4x6 or so dustpan & whisk broom set that snap together for storage. Most dollar stores carry them & they really are handy & little kids LOVE them.

Kids LOVE Dustbusters. (hand held rechargeable little vacuums) All of our kids have been able to use them from between 1-2yo & loved them. If they are a little older a rechargeable stick vac is good. Since they are rechargeable they don't have to plug them in & the kids love them.

Let's see, so other things are clay, crayons, LOTS of paper- our local newspaper sells their end rolls for $2 each- try covering a table with it & turning them loose with crayons.  Cheesy We give reams of printer paper to older kids along with colored pencils. If your boys are like mine & draw out the building instructions for their Lego creations then LOTS of graph paper is good. (& of course more Legos  Wink)

The basic sets of Legos & K'Nex are good deal for the amount of use a child gets from them. My kids have spent 1000's of hours over the years playing with Legos & K'Nex & they never get tired of them. Even my 22 year old still uses them. So do many adults that come over to visit.  Wink Wink

Wooden building blocks are good. So are wooden train sets. The kind that are Brio compatible. Just check on them to see how well they are made- some are well made & some are lousy & even a chocking hazard depending on what kid of connectors they use to join the track pieces together.

Dress up/pretend clothes are good & creativity can go a LONG way in keeping the cost down & be a lot of fun putting it together too.

A kids origami book with paper or a kit is good. Once they learn how to do it they just need more paper to keep doing more. Check out the origami paper in the kits & then keep an eye on wrapping paper when it goes on really good sales- some wrapping papers (but not all) makes good origami paper.

Toy money is good- my kids always preferred the toy money that was realistic, some toy coins don't look anything like the real thing.

A creative box is good- put in paper of different kinds, pipe cleaners, scraps of ribbon, foil, cardboard, wrapping paper, paper plates, the cardboard tubes from t.p., paper towels, foil, & wrapping paper, etc. Whatever you find that a child might use to create with. Even things like the foil pouch that a packaged mix came in can be washed, dried & added. Don't forget glue sticks, tape & scissors.

As LotsofBoys & I have posted about before, many creative boys would LOVE to get their OWN rolls of duct tape & masking tape so they don't get into hot water for using up the household supply.  When we were moving we taped boxes with duct tape & got different colors to color code the boxes. DS DS knew that DH was getting tape but didn't know about the different colors. DH gets home & DS opened the bag & spontaneously, enthusiastically exclaimed CHRISTMAS CAME EARLY.  Grin Grin

Thant's what I can think of for now. I hope it gives someone some ideas. Blessings ~herbalmom

I listened to a solo piano artist, David Nevue,  on "braydensmama"'s website and am going to order some of his cds for gifts.  If you go to his site, www.davidnevue.com, there is a cd sale special, 3 for $35 or 5 for $50, plus you can listen to 2.00 min. clips from each of the tracks.  They're all really pretty.  You could turn this into a basket for about $15 or so, by adding some good tea and some homemade goodies, or a tea cup/mug, or even just a tea bag "rest" (don't know the real name for the little thing you put your used tea bag on).

Another idea I found on a blog awhile ago is to give your child an "art cart". The lady bought one of those plastic chests of drawers that you can get at Walmart and then loaded it up with different art supplies for her daughter. They would also take walks in the woods together periodically to fill up her "nature supplies". She also made sure that most of what she put in the cart were things that her daughter could use on her own without a lot of supervision, so she could create when the inspiration struck her.  ;)I thought this was a great idea!

my wonderful, creative teen daughter is making "memory books".  she and her best girlfriend have been making them for a year or so, and writing in them like a diary.  they are beautiful, with pretty cloth and beads or buttons on the outside and come with a handkerchief and pocket sewn on the inside.  they may have a clasp if you like, but are more pretty without.  they are $10 each for a small one (5 x 6 1/2 in.), $15 for a large one (9 1/2" x 6 1/4").  they are really nice.

she also makes the small ones, a bit less fancy for a grocery list, Christmas list, etc. for $7 without a clasp, or $8 with a clasp.

she has been making "flax packs" for several years now, but is in the process of changing the sizes, so will post sizes and prices soon!  she is busy getting ready for a craft show Wednesday, so it will be soon after that.  pm me for orders, we don't have the etsy shop set up yet!

sorry it's taking us so long to get the pictures on here, she is doing a craft show tomorrow and has been really busy sewing and doing school.  we will get them done as soon as we can, possibly tomorrow night.  thanks for being patient!

We are going to NY to visit dh's family for Christmas, and we all agreed that instead of buying gifts for everyone we would play "Santa Swap" (Dirty Santa without the dirty). So we only have to bring one gift each. Yay! But we will also buy his Grandma a nice gift to give her on Christmas morning.

Anyway, we decided it would be nice to take something regional or local for our Santa Swap gifts. I got a nice little burlap gift "bag" (it's rigid though) with bees on it and bamboo handles, filled with honey and handmade candles, soap, and handcream from our local beekeepers. I don't know what other local gifts we will come up with, but I like this idea.

I think local treasures like that would be appreciated by anyone's far away friends and family. Of course you may have to get things that would ship better than honey and candles, but you get the idea.  Grin

Oh that was good! I think I'm going to get the one that says "Playing That Funky Music" for my husband. He loves 70's funk music but he is Mr. clean cut military guy. You'd never guess it. Thanks!

We had it last year and though I don't really like that kind of games one of the things that I liked was a combo of Arizona tea cans. There were also a bonzai, a cd keeper, and that kind of stuff... I hope you find something good.

I had to look up White Elephant before I knew that, but yep, same thing.  Grin

One time we had to take gifts to a round of Dirty Santa at a gathering of church members, and I made a miniature replica of the church with little moss hedges and everything. Dh took a gigantic package of toilet paper.  Roll Eyes LOL!

I'm going to buy a supply of pint jars, epsom salts, baking soda, sea salt, essential oils and make BATH SALTS for many people far and near!  Hostess gifts, last minute stuff, moms and aunts and nieces and neighbors and such.

I find some doozies at the thrift store.  There was the plaques of Jesus playing softball and soccer with kids...the boosier vase...the velvet painting...and some REALLY scary dolls and stuffed animals Grin

and here in the south, a 'dirty santa' is someone that you don't want in your family tree. Grin

My same thoughts here in the west. Grin
I am making assorted truffles/goodies for our SS teacher gifts, to our mail man, etc.  Marshmallow shooters and ammo for our little guys, dress up boxes for the girls (feather boa, $5 shoes w/sequins added on, homemade glitter gel), salves, muscle rub, a few Kleen Kanteens, Epicenter book, some homemade jewelry, a pair of coveralls, leather work gloves, a large order of our family photo put into frames, a sewing kit, a bacteria growing/testing kit (this mom can't wait for playing with this one! Wink
That pretty much sums up my shopping list.

ok, well i wasn't sure where to put this, but i'm trying to buy twin bedding for my boys for Christmas, (found some for the girls on Amazon) but am totally having no luck finding 100% cotton for the boys.  i've checked Amazon, Ebay, can't afford the Land of Nod (trying for under 100 each, under $75 is even better.)  also checked overstock.com.  has anyone bought great bedding for a great price??

Hoonie, I found some really pretty 100% cotton quilts for my girls at a store called Kohls.  They're similar to the discount stores like TJ Maxx, Marshalls, etc.  If you've got any of those, it's worth a check.  You just never know what they'll have in stock.  They usually don't carry 'cheap-o' stuff, and the prices were great.  I think I paid $25 each for the quilt & sham, and they still look nice after a year of use.
Another thought: I have also seen the big Pottery type superstores get in big shipments of cotton quilts.  We used to have one here, but it closed down.  If you have one near you, they had great prices and selection... $20 each for cotton quilts!

I got two whole sets of cotton bedding in a solid color at Bed Bath and Beyond for my daughters last Christmas.  Normally their prices are too high, but on clearance and with the 20% off coupons, I think it was only $50 for each set.  It may be worth checking clearances there.  ~L
