Here is a cheap place to bentonite clay if you buy in bulk. I bought a small amount from them and was very pleased with it.

Mountain Rose Herbs

If you read about zeolite, it sounds like the mechanism of action is very much like bentonite clay.
...so you mean you take the clay orally as well as in a bath?

Dara, thanks for your input about the web site.  Have you read anything about chlorella? I am about to start some research.  Has anything been posted about chlorella? Huh

So, can kids take chlorella for getting metals out of the body?  Is it safe for them? Huh  I wonder which would work better, chlorella or zeolyte.  Could you do the bath and the chlorella with a child?

Chlorella is one of those supplements that is contraindicated in people suffering from mercury toxicity - meaning it is inadvisable to take it.  I have used Natural Cellular Defense with my son and while it appeared to have no effect on him, a recent hair test showed he is eliminating arsenic.  I cannot say if this is due to the NCD (zeolite) or because of continuing chelation with ALA on Cutler's protocol or if it is due to recent exposure (new furniture, store-bought chicken, etc.).  A good search engine for Autism/Mercury issues is http://onibasu.com .  Click box for Autism/Mercury and search a particular subject such as "chlorella" or "zeolite".

Regarding hair tests, I use Doctor's Data Inc. (www.doctorsdata.com).  You need to get a prescription from your child's physician for a "Hair Elements Test" (make sure it is not a "toxic elements test").  You mail the prescription to DDI and they will mail you a hair test kit.  Directions are included but you basically snip several hair samples as close to the skull as possible and trimmed to 1 inch and submit with payment ($46 as of Dec. 2006).  The results will be sent to your doctor who probably won't be able to make heads or tails of it unless they are a DAN doctor.  However, you can!  Obtain a color copy of the test and follow the "counting rules" in the files section of the Autism-Mercury Yahoo board and you will know whether or not your child has a mineral transport problem which indicates mercury poisoning.  This test will actually tell you three things: 1) which metals your child tests high in, like arsenic, lead, nickel, etc., which is beneficial because you can then remove those sources, 2) which elements like calcium, copper, iron, etc. are high or low, and 3) whether or not your child has a mineral transport problem by counting results in the "essential and other elements" section.  Children who have mercury toxicity rarely show elevated mercury in their hair/urine/feces unless their exposure was recent.  Therefore, children injured years prior can only be identified by determining if they have a mineral transport problem.  Chelation is the only way you can heal children with mercury toxicity.  Some, probably most, children can benefit from a GFCG diet and most improve on vitamin supplements, EFA's, yeast meds, and probiotics.   However, failure to remove the mercury safely (no IV's, no chelation if child has amalgam fillings, etc.) may be as detrimental as failing to chelate at all.

It probably is great for removing metals, however, it cannot be measured for the purposes of using it on a mercury-toxic individual.  To safely chelate, you need to be able to measure the amount (like mg's) of chelator (like DMSA, ALA, DMPS) to pound of child.  Otherwise, you run the risk of making a mercury-toxic person much worse.  You must also maintain a steady body burden of whichever chelator you are using or you are just stirring up metals and letting them take hold elsewhere.  We know what that steady administration is for ALA and DMSA (www.noamalgam.com), we do not know what it is for chorella.

So, how would you measure the amount of NCD?  I've heard it's natural and it doesn't cause damage to the body like the DMSA and ALA.  They are harsh on the liver, wreak havoc on the intestines, and promote yeast overgrowth.  That's why they do like two weeks on and three weeks off (or however that goes  Roll Eyes).  My son had the urine test done and his lead was 16 and his mercury was 20 (they should both be less than 5).  DDI did the red blood cells elements test and it showed lead and mercury, but small amounts and the report said there were "no abnormal finding."  The doc said that just meant he wasn't currently being exposed to them.  It seems like the safest way to chelate would be the bentonite baths (Clay for Autism) b/c the toxins don't have to get into the system and pass through the liver.  Hmmm........ it's all very confusing.  Undecided

Whether or not you're interested in buying anything from the clayforautism site, I would recomend perusing it thoroughly. I got a lot of my questions answered by reading the FAQs, testemonials, etc. She has an oral chelation suppliment she recomends... you could look into what it is, what's in it, etc. and perhaps that would help answer some questions.
There is a lot of info on the web too, that you can find just by googling austim and mercury.
I recomend the book "Children with Starving Brains" as well. She goes really in depth with her treatment protocol, and you can at least understand what is typical in the DAN approach. I am in the proccess of researching "herbal chelation", if there is such a thing. I will let you know if/when I find anything.

Hi Abbilynn,
I saw your post and thought I'd chime in...
I like the NCD because I've seen and heard of good responses from people with heavy metal toxicity, however, it is actually patented as a treatment for cancer. I say that to make the point that those people using it for mercury, etc, removal are using it for a "side" purpose other than that for which it was developed.

That said, it is very clear that what works for one person may not work for another. That is true for "conventional" treatments as well as alternatives. If there were only one clear solution for every problem, we wouldn't need this site!  Wink

I actually talked with the president of a different supplement company who was irritated at the fact that many people he knew of were using NCD for purposes of removing toxins. He agreed that the NCD was often effective, but didn't like the cost. (Around $43 wholesale, I think.) He said he felt that people could get the same amount of benefit by taking several tablespoons of Bentonite internally per day. And that bentonite liquid supplement was available at a health food store for $14. He said that's what he did. I asked him how it tasted, and he said not good, kind of like cardboard. Tongue  Lips Sealed I tried to make the point that many people, ecpecially kids who are picky, are not interested in taking several tablespoons of cardboard supplement every day, and might be glad to pay more for the convenience of a supplement that you only have to take a few drops of, which tastes like water anyway. He understood my point but was still upset.

NCD is made of a mineral called zeolyte which is a claylike mineral similar to bentonite. I see no problem with using it at the same time with bentonite baths, since that would draw things out through the skin, and would be different than using the zeolyte internally.

Bottom line, I use NCD and I like it so far. BUT I don't care what anyone else's preference is for chelating/ removing heavy metals and toxins. I know there are a lot of different methods out there, and some will work for some people and others will for other people. NCD is distributed through MLM, which I don't like, but I have signed up just to save money for our own purchases. I do not want to sell it or try to make money from it. I am not  here to convince anyone of anything, I honestly hope that we all can find what works for us and our precious children!! I know I am always looking for what I can do to help my son with his Autism.

May the Lord bless us all in helping our children! Smiley

I don't know much about NCD although I used it with my son recently (someone sent me a bottle in the mail).  I felt safe using it because I was already chelating with ALA and thought it may help encapsulate moving metals and flush them out.  I don't know if NCD has the ability to cross the blood/brain barrier to remove mercury from the brain.  If your child has mercury in the brain, chelation with ALA (which is a natural supplement, BTW) is necessary to remove it.  Because mercury is coming out in your child's urine, I'd say he is either detoxing some on his own which is very good or he was exposed recently to additional mercury (like a flu shot or mercury vapors from a broken flourescent bulb, or a leaching amalgam filling).  Does he have any silver amalgam fillings?  How old is he and when do you think his mercury poisoning occurred and how?  When did you first notice he was not meeting age-level milestones?  If it was prior to his first birthday and he was getting all his baby vaccines, he may have been exposed to thimerosal prior to his development of the blood/brain barrier which means the mercury could have traveled to the brain.  With regard to the liver, intestinal concerns, and yeast overgrowth, effective chelation of any sort which is moving mercury will cause problems in these areas - it is the nature of the beast.  It is not the chelator which causes the problems, rather the mercury itself.  They can all be helped with vitamins and supplements like milk thistle for the liver, probiotics (kefir works here) for the gut and GSE for the yeast.  The key is to move slowly, giving more days "off" than "on" during a round like 3 days on/4 days off and maintaining a steady dose of chelator on "on" days.  I did use DMSA when I first started chelation in 2002 because my son also had lead issues.  You generally need a prescription for DMSA and blood tests should be taken during its use to check hemoglobin levels.  Many folks just use the ALA exclusively.  Here's a good site to read other moms' experiences:  www.autismchannel.net/dana/index.htm

Does anyone recommend chelation with the doc's prescription?  I do believe my little one has mercury from immunizations, and had reactions to them as well.  The GFCF diet is doing wonders, and we have been doing high dosages of the Vit. C to flush out mercury.  His ped. said he is so responsive to the diet there is no telling what the chelation may do for him.  She thinks it is a good idea.  But as a mom of an autistic son who has made many milestones,  I don't want to do anything to alter or slow our progress.  I prefer safe an natural,  but will the benonite even touch something as the mercury  effecting the brain? From what I've read, the earlier you chelate the better.  He is 4,  5 in June.  I am so torn about what to do.  I am familiar with the DAN protocol, and although our ped. isn't a DAN doc.,  she is some familiar.  She and I pretty much exchange notes each time we talk. She says, "Mommys always know best".  She is the type that is fine with the natural approach.  Our last conversation,  she suggested coming in and getting a hair test to check his levels first.  She said from there we would know how much to chelate.  Any thoughts?

quicksilver - the reason the mercury came out in his urine is b/c they gave him a dose of DMSA first and then I collected his urine for the next six hours.  He has no fillings, has not recently been exposed to mercury according to one of the tests they did, and hasn't had any flu shots.  The last time he got any shots was a couple years ago.  I'm not sure if the mercury is in his brain or not.  I guess I should assume it is?  Huh  I'm not sure either if the NCD can cross the blood/brain barrier.  I believe he got the poisoning from vaccines and eating tuna.  He didn't show signs of problems until after age 2.  He was in bad shape by age 3 - MAJOR sensory issues.  So, considering his intestinal problems right now, I don't know what is worse - wait to chelate and try to resolve the intestinal problems and risk the lead and mercury doing more damage or chelate and have the intestinal problems become much worse.   Undecided Undecided

ByHisGrace - my son will be 5 in June also!  As much as I've researched chelation and what works, I still feel lost.  Cry Undecided  There's sooooo much contradictory information out there.  I don't even know what to believe and what not to believe.  I'm so glad you've had so much success with the diet - we did also!!  And I, too, can't wait to see the improvement when we remove the lead and mercury.  All I (we) can do is pray for enormous amounts of God's wisdom b/c only He knows what is best!  I just don't feel convinced He has shown me exactly what that is yet................ Huh Huh

I too feel like I am on an endless journey of learning.  But the Lord has kept me humble in showing me just how fragile our bodies and this life's journey can be, and how Holy and magnificent his promises are if we will ask and depend on him for our every need.   I am grateful everytime He gives us a piece to the monstrous puzzle of autism.  I am now listening to Noah call out "Luke, where are you?", his brother , and a year ago he barely recognized he existed.  I thank God he let us hear Noah's voice again.  It has been exhausting at times,  waiting and wondering about the next step.  What else may help, etc.  But I think if God gave us the whole puzzle at once it would be way too overwhelming.  There is joy in patience and waiting on the Lord and His time.
We began the diet almost a year ago.  It took several months of detoxing to see the results, and then we began the study and dosage of vitamins.  Now,  chelation??? Then,  speech therapy?Huh
I don't want to wait too late to do something with the mercury.  But,  I do have to stop and remind myself God showed us right on time about the diet and vitamins.  Dependance.  I know He'll give us the answer again, but as a mother I still have that nagging worry in the depth of my gut.

ByHisGrace,
I would recommend getting the hair elements test from DDI to help you make the decision about chelation (I posted about it earlier in this thread).  I am thinking that if you are having success with the GFCF diet, your son's issues may be more related to the MMR vaccine effects than those vaccines which contained mercury but the hair test will help with this determination.  The MMR vaccine did/does not contain mercury but many children develop "autism" after its administration because the live measles virus contained in the vaccine takes up residence in the gut.  This can result in leaky gut syndrome and the GFCG diet helps offset the problems associated with the wheat and dairy proteins being leaked into the body before digestion can occur.  I did not start chelating my son until age 6 (he is now 11) so if mercury is your son's problem you have plenty of time to get dramatic results.  Chelation any time before the onset of puberty gives you a greater opportunity for recovery as the brain goes through another growth spurt at this time.  However, it is never too late to chelate!  Mercury toxic adults will improve with chelation though it takes a year or two for them to begin to feel normal again.  Intravenous Vitamin C is sometimes used for mercury detox by alternative doctors but it is not a chelating agent by itself.  It is a powerful antioxidant though and we use it administered 3-4 times a day to offset chelation side effects.  I do not know anything about benonite clay therapies, I'm afraid.  You do not need to chelate with a prescription chelator like DMSA or DMPS unless your child tests high in lead or copper.  You can use ALA (Alpha Lipoic Acid-I use Kirkman's brand, www.kirkmanlabs.com), 1/8 to 1/2 mg per pound of child administered every three hours (even through the night but you can stretch it for 4 hours instead of 3) for either 3 days on/4 days off or 3 days on/11 days off.  Supplement with Vitamins B, C, Magnesium, & Milk Thistle 4x a day.  It is helpful to also take Zinc, Vitamin E, flax seed oil and/or Borage Oil.  It will only take a couple of rounds to see if there is improvement to help you decide if you want to continue on this path.  I pray you will find the answers you are seeking with regard to restoring your son to good health.

Abbilynn,
With elevated mercury and lead showing up in the urine test, I'd say chelation is your son's best method of obtaining recovery.  Because the mercury came out so readily, perhaps he is holding it in his body as opposed to his brain.  It is usually recommended that you reduce the body load first with DMSA.  DMSA is also used for lead so you are killing two birds with one stone.  The use of DMSA though means you'll need to have periodic blood work done to ensure his hemoglobin levels remain normal.  We started out with DMSA first and had to take breaks every two months to give Joseph's body time to recover via vitamins and supplements.  Once your son is no longer dumping mercury and lead in high levels, you can either add ALA or switch entirely to ALA.  The reason you don't use this first is because ALA does cross the b/b barrier and you risk moving metals into the brain if the body burden is already high.  Have you read the book Evidence of Harm by David Kirby?  It is the most concise work I've read on the whole vaccine/mercury debate and will bring you up to speed on what has happened so far - scientifically, politically, etc.

I remember being terrified about chelation when we started but our results were so immediate that there was no turning back.  It has been the hardest thing I've ever done (4+ years of sleepless nights every other week!) but the alternative was worse - a son trapped in a painful world we could never enter or even understand.  He is now talking and learning and enjoying life with his family.  Don't fret about having so much to learn - It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter. (Prov 25:2)   He will bless our efforts as we search and seek Him in all things.  He loves our boys even more than us and He desires their complete restoration. Amen?  Amen!

Well, I think I've decided on a chelation route (for now at least  Roll Eyes).  I'm going to go with the environmental bentonite clay baths b/c they are safe, gentle, and work quickly to pull the toxins AND metals out of the body.  Plus, it won't hinder the work we are doing in his intestines to rebuild.  We will retest after awhile and if there are still problems we may start BioChelate.  While doing the baths we are going to keep working on repairing the intestines and getting rid of remaining yeast.  Like it was mentioned, I want to remove the metals in his tissues before I try removing them from the brain so they are not released and carried into the brain from the tissues.  Anyway, we'll see how it goes.  I feel hopeful about the baths!  Grin

Maybe the questions about the effectiveness of NCD Zeolite for autism will be answered soon.  A clinical trial was begun in July 2006.  Look here for more info:

Just want everyone to know that we have tried Betonite clay bath from Bulk Herb Store, so far so good.  I accidently put too much in his first bath and paid for it for two days!!  He was very very irritable for two days, so it seems to be helping him.  We had major detox symptoms, so it really seems to be helping him.  He has been so calm today considering how he has been.  I will keep you updated on the clay baths.  I think I bought 1lb for about 5.00 or so.  I'm very excited about this.

We are doing bentonite clay on my son.  The first couple of weeks he showed massive improvement with his speach and concept of things.  After about 2 maybe 2 1/2 months he seems to regress on the clay.  Is this detoxing or is there a certain schedule I should refer to.  I've read with the medical chelation there is a 1 to 2 week break in between treatments.  Is this true and should I do this with the natural form?

Have you tried epsom salt baths? Whenever I feel like I'm really detoxing and feel bad from it, I do epsom salt baths and they really help me feel better. Epsom salts are magnesium and magnesium often gets depleted when you detox.

Yes, they do take breaks with chelation. I would take a break of at least a week.

I second the book recommendation.  I'm reading it right now and can't put it down.  I'm fixing to start buying some of the recommended natural supplements mentioned in the book for metal detoxification for my son.  I started the thread on Arsenic Poisoning.  It has been a really rough road for us!!  We are currently getting ready to move out of this old house since we think environmental issues are possibly a factor. Chealation can be very tricky.  You see awesome results, but then you start seeing die-off reactions, which can cause mineral deficiencies(sp).  We have experienced this problem with my son, we have to stop the chelation because he gets so irritable and grouchy from the detox symptoms.  We will start slowly again. We too are doing the clay baths; we normally have a really hard day the day after the clay baths.  Noah really has a time with getting rid of toxins.  He always has runny stools and rashes while he is detoxing.  Do you run into this problem also?  Sometimes I feel like it's doing more harm than good.  I have heard that if they have detox reactions that that is a good sign that their body is getting some really nasty stuff out. Anyway, sorry got off of topic.  Good luck with chelating.  Oh yeah, I would give his body a rest on the clay baths too.  Maybe try two weeks on and then skip two weeks and see what happens.

iodine chelates mercury. from what I've read it is much cheaper and safer than other methods. here is a link.

It also kills candida.

Here is a support forum for those taking iodine. You can find a lot of links with good info there. http://curezone.com/forums/f.asp?f=815

This study says kids with autism are deficient in iodine.

My son hasn't had any runny stools,  but does seem to be a bit more regular.  He has always had a problem breaking down food,   a common problem that comes along with his autism.
His pediatrician is referrring us to a metabolic/genetics doctor.  She said the wait list is 1 to 6 months.  Do you think this is a good idea?  She's sending him b/c his hair test came back with very high counts of aluminum,  tin,  some arsenic, and his magnesium, cobalt, and molybdenum are low.  The only normal is his copper level.  The mercury,  surprisingly,  is low. .  From what I've read that could be a sign he is holding the mercury in his body.  SO....the doc. referred us to see if the "medical" form of chelation would be the next step,  but advised me to continue the bentonite and high dosages of magnesium/B6 combination.

I think that the genetic or metabolic dr. would be a good idea.  We are starting to wonder the same thing for Noah.  That's interesting about the hair test.  Even though his hair test came back low for mercury, it could still mean his body is holding on to the mercury.  I have read that Mercury binds tightly to the brain nerve cells.  Some children have a hard time letting go of the Mercury in the body due to errors in their detox/methylation pathways.  I would think that this could be what's causing Noah to have lots of toxins and metals in his body.  From what I have read arsenic is one of the easiest metals to get rid of.  It rapidly leaves the body when chelated.  When we saw Noah's first arsenic blood test it came back at 165.  After 3 days of chelating it was down to 36!  I wish we too could find a DR.(who was covered by insurance) who would do hair tests and start a medical chelator.  Can you still do a hair test on your child if they have had a haircut?  I have heard conflicting sides. Maybe if yall take your son to a metabolic/genetics Dr. you will find some other things out that someone else has missed.  Good luck in your search for the answers.

Hey I just wanted to post an experience I had last night that was encouraging.  I have to preface this by saying that I believe that the Autism spectrum is multi-faceted, and what therapy works for some children may not work for everyone.

Three months ago we moved from a housing development and last night we went back for a going away party for some friends.  There is a 6 year old girl in the neighborhood who has Autism.  I asked her parents when we met if she had special needs, and they said she had the MMR at 12 mos. and within 24 hours whe was a different child: withdrawn, disconnected, emotionally stagnant.

When I got to the neighborhood last night I saw her and another little girl carrying on a conversation and riding their bikes together.  I was floored.  I've never heard her say one word, or make eye contact with anyone.  I went inside and asked my friends if they'd noticed a difference in her and they both lit up and said, "YES!!!" and proceeded to tell me how her mom had taken her to someone to cut everything out of her diet (wheat, sugar, corn, rice, everything...) and since they put her on a very strict diet and supplements, she is now mainstream in school.  She is not 100% where they think she would have been, she still struggles with some things in school, but you'd never notice it.

UNbelievable.  So it really encouraged me and I thought you might be able to benefit from it as well, that a change in diet might severely help some kids.

Sorry my respose is so delayed.  Yes,  you can have a hair test after a hair cut,  but you need to wait until their hair grows a bit,  because you have to cut the hair so close to the scalp.  After I did my Noah's hair sample,  I buzzed his hair with a one and three guard.  It looked fine.
I got my hair sample kit from Great Planes Lab.  I ordered online and got the ped. to sign off on it,  and they billed my insurance after the test was complete.  We have Blue Cross Blue Shield Ins,  and they have an insurance discount for those with  BCBS Ins.  I may do another hair test on Noah soon.  The first was before the bentonite clay,  so I am curious about what it may say now after almost 3 months of natural chelation..
I did give him a break this week from the clay and he is feeling better.  I'm not sure when to start it back since he was on the clay so long to start with.  Any suggestions?
