My husband had a horrible cough for the past week and we ran into a friend of ours who told us to mix 1/2 t. salt in with 1 cup of warm water.  Put it into a bowl and snort it up your nose into your sinus cavity and do it enough so it comes out your mouth.  This will prevent yourself from getting colds and flus because salt with kill the virus.  All colds and flus originate through the mouth or nose.  I felt like I was coming down with a cold the past few days but snorted salt water every day and have not gotten it.  My friend said he never gets colds or flu's.  Try it!

This reminds me of those little porcelain things at our co-op that do something w/ salt water up the nose...and the stuff about hydrogen peroxide in the ears from Dr. Mercola...

Made the Kickin' Cough stuff and dd said it was "awful" Tongue (had some extra honey in it, though)...she's not coughing!  Nose is running....I'll take that!

carolinachic - Well, he's getting better, but still has a little bit of a wet cough and his voice sounds slightly horse.  I've been giving him the cough syrup three times a day for two days now.  How long can I keep giving it to him?  My middle son started running a fever last night and looked awful so I did a garlic enema before he went to bed and put GOOT on his chest and he woke up fine!  Now this morning, my oldest son is coughing, stuffed up and sounding horse.  Looks like I'll be making more cough syrup, maybe a few batches at a time!  Wink  With the cough syrup and GOOT is there anything else I could give them to try and avoid getting it full-blown?  They already take GSE, aloe vera juice, and a probiotic every day.

Well guess what? My son started running a fever of 103 degrees last night. So after two Ginger/lavender/tea tree baths he dropped his fever!!! I also made my recipe but I was giving it to him about every couple hours, I don't think you can really overdose, other than like my oldest son, doesn't like to take too much because he gets heartburn and burps from the garlic. But I went ahead and gave my other children the cough syrup for preventive measures!!!

I swear by eucalyptus oil for colds. It does miracles for my kids. I have than lay on the couch and read or watch something and rub the eucalyptus oil on the pillow their laying on, that way their breathing it in, or like I think HB suggested you can put it on a rag and hold it to their nose to breathe inhale. I also do eucalyptis baths!!! The steam from the bath makes it easy to inhale the eucalyptus!

Hope they get better Smiley

I need some help!  We are visiting my in-laws and my 4 month old is getting a cold, she is stopped up, dry cough, and just miserable.  I have ECO and have been putting it on her blanket at night.  I have been rubbing mentholum on her chest. Oh and a sudacare plug in.  GOOT is out of the question here, too smelly Grin.  I need to go find her some Gripe Water to help make her more comfortable.   I finally gave her some Infant Tylenol just for comfort. She isn't running a fever, just miserable.

Any suggestions that might work here for a little baby?  At this point I would give her
Robitussin or something if it would help her get some rest, but I don't even know what to give a little baby.  My older 2 DD's I have been giving lemon juce and honey and then some Robitussin at bedtime if they are really coughing.

Thanks!!

carolinachic - how's your son now?  I've been giving all three of mine the cough syrup and GOOT once or twice a day on their chests.  The little guy who has been really sick is still not getting over it.  His cough is still really bad and phlemmy, and yesterday the snot coming out of his nose went from clear to slightly green  Tongue  But no fever since he ran that high one for three days earlier in the week.  Undecided  I don't know what else I can do for him.  We are already doing the cough syrup, GOOT, sage, and the vaporizer with eucalyptus.  Did your other kids end up getting it?  My other two have the cough but not the yucky nose.  Maybe it just takes a long time to run its course  Huh  Hope yours are feeling better!

Does anyone have a remedy for that persistent tickle in the throat that causes coughing fits? I get the same tickle at the end of every cold. It seems to last forever, and usually attacks at the worst times. I've been up 2 nights and have had it all day as well. I have never found anything to help.

Any suggestions?

I have good luck with Eucalyptus inhaled or Thyme tea (with Peppermint for flavor).

You know, I have thought to try the Eucalyptus on a rag by my pillow, but only after I had been coughing for part of the night. It seemed like each time I remembered to do this, I actually slept for several hours. Thanks!

Probably not WTM approved  Wink , but here's what I do.  I put a couple of saltines in my mouth and chew.  Not too long cause you want them to be pretty dry.  When I swallow, the roughness "scratches" my throat.  Sometimes it takes 2-3 tries but always works for a while.  Of course this is just treating the symptoms not the cause.  But when you are desperate.....

I mixed this up and put it right into a honey bear squeeze bottle. I probably used twice the honey, but it really does the trick.

My kids can take more spice than the average American kid, but they still can't or won't eat food as hot as hubby and me.  How "hot" is this medcine?

Hey HB, I didn't see this until today. Sorry 'bout that. Anyway, if your kids can handle a little hot, then they should be able to handle this with no problem. Even my daughter, who absolutely avoids hot sauce, can handle this very well. However, she does have a glass of water handy in case of emergency Grin

This happens to me as well.  Usually drinking some water or sucking on a throat lozenge (I use the Ricola Honey Lemon with Echinacea kind) will help.  I keep a bottle of water by my bed, so when it happens at night, I just take a couple sips & it goes away & I can go back to sleep.  Hope that helps!   Smiley

My husband gets this same thing.  It's horrible!  It usually lasts for a couple of weeks and the coughing gets so bad he actually gets sore ribs.  So far nothing we've tried has really helped.

I was just told that due to our mild weather (in the U.P. of MI), the mold spores are thriving, and making many people have problems w/ coughs ("allergies").  The eucalyptus oil REALLY helped us overnight. They slept well (I guess it aids w/ that, too), and the cough is greatly reduced.  I did the wet wash cloth w/ drops of eucalyptus hanging from the headboards/bunk beds.  Then I rubbed it in w/some almond oil on their chests.

We're in Indiana, also. Every time I go out, I feel even worse!

It seems like the eucalyptus oil isn't working as well as the first two nights. I really wish this would end soon! All day, most of the night. Tongue

Just curious...for those who have children w/ the prolonged coughing...do the adults have it, too?  My DH and I have avoided it (who knows how), and we're wondering why just the children have it?  Is it waiting until they're healthy to attack us (like any other illness)?   Huh

I hope your little girl is doing better.  I've been going through the same thing with our 3-month daughter, too.  It has been one full week since she started with her cough - started out as a dry cough then turned very thick, and she couldn't cough anything out.  She sounded horrible, and then she started wheezing very loudly and breathing very rapidly within a couple of days - not good.  She also had sinus congestion, too.  No fever though.  She's breastfed.

Anyway, I started with things I had on hand like garlic oil with eucalyptus, thyme, and tea tree oils mixed in - smelled really bad, but I massaged her with it starting on her back, armpits, and chest with it. (I'm now a little hesitant to use the tea tree oil after reading some info in the threads on it.)   This seemed to ease the wheezing for a little, but I couldn't get rid of it.  I also rubbed her with lobelia extract to help relax her respiratory passages, but she wasn't improving very much.  She needed something more.

Then I read about GOOT, and halfway through the week started rubbing on her chest, back, armpits, and feet 3 times a day.  I also started using Nature's Sunshine ALJ (boneset, fenugreek seed, horseradish root, mullein leave, and fennel seed) 5 drops every 2 hours.  The day after I started the ALJ, I began giving her Elderberry Syrup from Herbs for Kids - 1/2 tsp. 4 times a day.  She has been on the GOOT and oral herbs together now for two days. The wheezing stopped after the first day of giving her these things together.  She is doing so much better!

I have also been giving her ginger, peppermint, and lavender baths, and those have really helped to calm and relax her.

I hope this makes sense.  I have also used Cherry Bark Blend by Herbs for Kids with my other son when he was 6 mo. and it seemed to work.  It's really hard when they are so little because you can't give them teas or pills or even chewables.  I am going to experiment with some of the recipes for cough syrups also on this thread-always learning.  Smiley  I would love to make these remedies myself!

Does anyone know of a remedy for sinus congestion in very small babies?  I've been using Little Noses saline solution with my 3 mo. daughter, but it doesn't seem to help and just gives her a really bad stomach ache.  Is there anything that will rid the nasal congestion completely?

Thanks!

No, but I have used it in her eyes when she was first born.  She had conjuctivitis, and my midwife just told me to squirt some breastmilk in periodically.  It worked - cleared it up faster than the prescription eye goop the doctors usually give.  I have also used the breastmilk on scratches, too, and they healed really fast.  Don't know why I didn't think about the nose.

Anyway, I'll have to try your suggestion.  Thanks.

OK...our coughs are mostly gone...but so are most of my herbal remedies!   Roll Eyes

Checked out bulkherbstore and searched for "whooping cough" on someone's recommendation.  Saw some herbs for a cough and picked 3 (seems random, I know, but I knew what I had and what I knew about).  So I took the mullein, red clover and thyme and this time I ground them up in my Vita-Mix...then, I mixed a bag of that w/ some red raspberry tea...the children loved it.  Wonder if it'll work or how I'll know if it does?

Do you all grind your herbs before you make teas?

Grinding is not acutally recommened for making teas.  I don't know why, but have never tried it based on this.  I believe it would make them difficult to strain, but again, not sure.  Perhaps this would be a good post for this thread.

Smiley  Thanks--I did eventually find that combined thread and posted there, as well!  I've read something about waiting to grind until before you make the tea to preserve some of the medicinal properties. Wish I could recall the whole gist of it.  I'm sure, sooner or later, hb, or beeyoutifulgirl or SC or herbalmom or alittlemore will find it out and let me know!   Wink

I don't know about the post but hopefully this will help. Nutritional & medicinal properties of ANY food, herb, tincture, etc. deteriorate in the presence of heat, light, moister, & oxygen. That's why you store herbs cool, dark, dry, & as airtight as possible. The larger the pieces are in, the less oxygen it is exposed to so the better it will keep & grinding just before use preserves the medicinal qualities the best. HTH.

How fine are you grinding them? Just curious. I agree w/HB that if you are grinding very fine it would be difficult/impossible to strain & unpleasant to drink. Blessings ~herbalmom

A Russian girl in Israel taught us to treat a sore throat and nagging cough by drinking a mug of warm milk with a pat of real butter melted in it.  This is especially soothing when administered at night just prior to going to bed.

I have a Vita-Mix as well, & I love it. Anyway, I think it was referring to grinding for cooking such as grinding whole cloves to spice pumpkin pie. If your putting it in a cotton tea bag, I would make sure there was a lot of extra room so the water can move around the herbs freely to extract the max medicinal qualities. If its packed to tightly, water may not come in max contact w/all the herb in the center. I would also slosh it around some or dunk it ap & down in the water for the same reason. Just my .02 HTH Blessings ~herbalmom
