All my best  homemade cough syrups are made with honey and I know its suggested that you not give honey to an infant under 1year but one thing I do with a night cougher is take them in the smallest bathroom turn on the shower as hot as possible and sit in the steam for 15 to 20 min.  This almost always offers some relief  If I'm out of the mama made stuff I have been known to give even my infants a half dose of a store bought  cough syrup along with a steam.  This helps us all get some sleep.  Now, their all big enough to come wake me and tell me that they need a steam.

SC, does this work with allergies also?  My son is just sniffing and sniffing.  He has not had any milk products for I would say two weeks.  He stayed with my folks this week and they were good to not give him that stuff..  They did go out to the lake yesterday and messed him all up.  He seemed fine when we got him but now that we are home(I think our house is part of the problem)he is sniffing and sniffing again but of course when he blows...nothing.  so I gave him a ginger bath and now I am making him the tea.  Just wondered if you just use it for colds or also for allergy stuffiness.  I am getting really discouraged. I don't want him to take OTC stuff.  He is taking standard Process stuff which seems good but apparently not good enough.   Sad

I have a 3 month old baby with some type of cold/virus that he picked up from my friend's daughter.  I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions to help his cough and congestion.  My friend's baby (13 mos) has had the stuffiness for about 8 days now.  For both, they seem pretty unaffected in personality during the day.  My friend's baby was treated with Motrin and OTC cough medicine but is still not 100% better.  We are trying to avoid conventional decongestants/cough medicine and support his body in fighting it.  My son is coughing more in the evening and we've been pulling "buggars" out of his nose during the day... his cough is very wet sounding, and he almost seems to gag every once in a while.  He had a very mild fever the first night, but hasn't since then (that was 5 days ago).  The natural health book we have suggested onion poultices in his socks at night and a potato poultice for his chest.  He's on his 3rd night with the "onion socks," his first with the potato poultice, and 2nd with a vaporizer.  His congestion seemed stronger today, but I'm not sure if that's because the treatments are working and getting the congestion out, or if he's getting worse.  I'm a new mom dealing with my son's first illness, and I would appreciate any advice!  He hasn't seemed worse at all, but not seeming better yet either.  thanks!  Embarrassed PS, forgot to say he is 100% breast-fed.

Hey, Giddie,

I totally understand what you are going through.  My 6 mo. old is having her first cough.  I gave her a ginger bath today.  You might try typing garlic poultice or phelm or coughing in the search and there are lots of remedies.  I would point you in the right direction I just don't know how to do links that way.  But I do know there are lots of advice on that stuff.  In fact I think there is one that says 3 1/2 month old with cold.  That would be under childrens health.  Hope that helps you find something to help our little guy.  Smiley

Well, this morning baby boy is sounding more "liquid" when he coughs and sneezes, and there are no solid buggars in his nose to clean out.  I'm not sure if that's an improvement or not - it seems to be, in my mind, but maybe not?  He is still just as cheerful as ever when he's awake, but he sings such a quiet, sad little song when he's falling asleep.  He spit up this am (very unlike him) and there was lots of mucous in it.

I did the searches Pennie suggested and I'm going to give a ginger bath this am and maybe try the garlic tea - is it ok to try the tea with him at this age, and especially since he is breast fed?  I don't want to introduce other foods for at least a few more months, and I hope a new taste doesn't affect his nursing.  I had read a similar recipe to the tea for adults, and I've been taking garlic mixed with honey myself hoping some of the benefits would pass to him through my milk.  I got him to drink a few sips of water in a bottle yesterday, which a friend suggested to help break up the mucous.  I was nervous doing that because I didn't want to interfere with nursing!  Although my friend has nursed 7 babies so she should know!  Thanks for your help, I've only been looking through this site since last night, and it's great!

I have been hesitant to give Annika anything orally too b/c I haven't introduced any food to her.  I did make the garlic tea for 7 yr old last night.  Was not a good experience but he got it down.  I tried it more for allergies for him though.  If you do give him garlic tea just don't forget to sweeten with something besides honey.  I am sure you know that already.... :)just a little reminder.

My 12mo son has had a runny nose for a few days.  I have been treating him with a few herbs and garlic in his food.  The runny nose has slowed down, but there seems to be severe congestion developing in his chest.  This is the reverse effect I was looking for!  I just don't know WHAT is safe for one so young.  His cough sounds rough and hard...really bad.  Then his nose is also stopped up.  Anyone know something that will work??  Many thanks!

During naptime, or bedtime, chop an onion and place it in a bowl.  Then drizzle some honey over it.  Place it by the head of the bed where the child can breath in the onion aroma.  We've tried this several times and have found that it usually dries out the sinuses.  We've tried this once with chest congestion, and I believe it worked, but it is hard to say because we also did onion compresses, so I don't know which was the most effective.

The child will have a very strong onion odor when done napping, so I usually gave them a bath to make them feel better.

Chest congestion always happens if my non walker/runners get anything nasal.  Once they are big enough to run, fall and get breathing really heavy in activity, those symptoms never occur.  For us, it's activity & position.  Here's what we do:

Child is layed face down over the lap with head/shoulders lower than the hips.  Then you start rapidly pounding all over everything protected by ribs.  Cupped hands seems to work best & the idea is to physically loosen up that congestion and allow gravity & breathing in that position to move it up & out.  We try to shoot for 5 minutes  - unless they get coughing - then we quit and start again in 15 min or so.

Sound Yucky?  Well, at our house it's great fun.  #1 - Dad does it- which makes it better right away.  #2 - Child (& parent to demonstrate) makes a droning "Ahhhh" sound that gets all rattled up by the pounding and sounds silly. (This also makes them get lots of air down in there so the sounds last longer & the airways are forced open.)    When they are upside-up again, they usually cough for a bit, but that 's good - gets that stuff up and out of the lungs.

When it's bad, we do this every hour or even more often.  Best not to do it after a meal, but after a hot tub and before bed is perfect.

Please ask for clarification if that doesn't make sense-

The ABC herbal book says to make a garlic poultice to put on the baby.  I put a clove of crushed garlic in a washrag, pour boiling water over it, let is set a minute, squeeze out excess water so it won't drip and apply when the rag is cool enough not to burn but still very warm.  You hold the rag on the chest, the back, then soles of feet.  Hold each place for a minute and repeat until the rag is cold and the garlic seems to be week.  The book recommends doing at least every hour or every fifteen minutes in severe cases.  My SIL did this with her 14 mo old every fifteen minutes for a couple of hours and the cough almost disappeared entirely.  She feels if she had stuck with it a little longer it would have been gone completely.

This really is a generel question but I did not know where to put this as we all have this.  I had it a few weeks ago and kicked it but my DH decided to give ti back.  It is a bad cough that comes when after you have been laying down.  There is very little coughing going on during the day, and no congestion.  It is hard to breathe though.  I am trying garlic but we really need something else as DH Can not stomach the garlic and he has had this for almost 2 weeks.

I put a few drops of eucalyptus oil on a damp washcloth and the kids hold it near their face and breath it - all day, all night - as long as it takes. This soothes the coughing, and eucalyptus is very antibacterial and antiviral as well. I've killed strep and bacterial congestion overnight with a eucalyptus rag.

I've also put a few drops in the bathwater with sealed up and steamy bathroom and it produces the same effect.  Helps settles coughs and/or sore throats.  You could also try garlic and/or onion poultices to get it into the blood stream faster.  Also read the threads on croup and coughing/phlegm for more ideas.

Hi! I am tired and this seems to be an epidemic. I am to the point that I am not sure what to do. I am ready to drag back out the old drugs. My husband had something 2 weeks ago. Just a fever and congestion that lasted for about 4 days. Then my oldest son had just a fever a few days later that lasted for 3 days. My second son came down with a terrible cough a week ago and now has fever. I doesn't seem to be getting any better. My oldest daughter started feeling bad 2 days ago and today has started with the hacking cough and fever and she is complaining of her stomach hurting! I am afriad that my 9mo old is going to get whatever it is and it will continue to get worse. What can I do? I have tried garlic, elderberry, echinecia, and Vit C. I don't know what to do. They just can't seem to shake whatever it is. Please help! Signed: TIRED and FRUSTRATED

Lots and lots of water...it helps kep the mucous thin.  Licorice, Cherry bark, and mullein are also good for coughs.   Licorice seems to be the best overall, but needs to be used with extreme caution.  It can increase blood pressure.  Cherry bark reduces coughing...epecially he wet coughs.  Mullein is soothing.
We went through this a few weeks ago...or something very similar.  The biggest thing is lots of water and rest.  Keep up with the garlic.  Your daughter may have an upset stomach if she has mucous draining into her stomach.  Water will help this a bit as it thins the mucous.  Also keep crackers or something dry on her stomach. Avoid dairy if you can because it increases mucous and that will make them feel worse.  Als oregano oil is supposed to be good..antiviral properties.   I hope your family gets to feeling better soon!

I know it's so simple and we ALL get sick of hearing this, I'm sure, but: CUT OUT ALL SUGAR. 100%.

Also, a bodily cleanse is a good idea. There's oodles of info on this site about cleanses of every variety. I would encourage you to take advantage of the info and apply it to your own family in a way that makes sense.

Green Tea is a wonderful, healthful beverage, and very refreshing. Your can buy it in bulk from the BulkHerbStore. While you are waiting for your bulk green tea to arrive, you can go to WalMart and buy a box or two of it. To make a pitcher of it, I take 5 bags and steep them in warm water for 5-7 minutes. (No longer or else the tea will get bitter.) We sweeten it with local, raw honey. (Honey is a natural immune booster and healer. Wink And it's yummy!!) If you don't have access to local honey, I would encourage you to look into Stevia, a natural sweetener with many healthful benefits. Steer clear of sugar.

One thing the little ones around here LOVE is when I make "earl green" tea. (A spin-off of Earl Grey tea, which is made from adding Bergamot essential oil to black tea.) Simply make your pitcher of green tea and add ONE drop of Bergamot. (Any more makes it perfumey.)

Other things you can do to change up your green tea is adding Peppermint Leaf or Cinnamon sticks. You can drink the tea hot or iced. Remember to always warm it gently on the stove if you are re-heating it, not in the micro-wave.

We enjoy Green Tea more and more around here. I think it's getting to be a daily treat. It's a great energy booster.

Another thing is to eat very nourishing, easy-to-digest foods. You can make a wonderful home-made, low sodium Chicken soup (which tastes INCREDIBLE) from Sally Fallon's (author of Nourishing Traditions) chicken stock recipe. Here is a quote from another post with her recipes for healthy stocks. (We use it all the time - in everything. I call it my "secret ingredient" for why my chili, rice, beans, soups, etc. all taste soooo good. Smiley)

"Here are Sally Fallon's (author of Nourishing Traditions - http://www.bulkherbstore.com/NT?id=h3quEMhT) recipes for homemade chicken and beef stock:

CHICKEN STOCK
1 whole free-range chicken or 2 to 3 pounds of bony chicken parts, such as necks, backs, breastbones and wings*
gizzards from one chicken (optional)
2-4 chicken feet (optional)
4 quarts cold filtered water
2 tablespoons vinegar
1 large onion, coarsely chopped
2 carrots, peeled and coarsely chopped
3 celery stalks, coarsely chopped
1 bunch parsley

*Note: Farm-raised, free-range chickens give the best results. Many battery-raised chickens will not produce stock that gels.

If you are using a whole chicken, cut off the wings and remove the neck, fat glands and the gizzards from the cavity. Cut chicken parts into several pieces. (If you are using a whole chicken, remove the neck and wings and cut them into several pieces.) Place chicken or chicken pieces in a large stainless steel pot with water, vinegar and all vegetables except parsley. Let stand 30 minutes to 1 hour. Bring to a boil, and remove scum that rises to the top. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 6 to 8 hours. The longer you cook the stock, the richer and more flavorful it will be. About 10 minutes before finishing the stock, add parsley. This will impart additional mineral ions to the broth.

Remove whole chicken or pieces with a slotted spoon. If you are using a whole chicken, let cool and remove chicken meat from the carcass. Reserve for other uses, such as chicken salads, enchiladas, sandwiches or curries. Strain the stock into a large bowl and reserve in your refrigerator until the fat rises to the top and congeals. Skim off this fat and reserve the stock in covered containers in your refrigerator or freezer.

BEEF STOCK

about 4 pounds beef marrow and knuckle bones
1 calves foot, cut into pieces (optional)
3 pounds meaty rib or neck bones
4 or more quarts cold filtered water
1/2 cup vinegar
3 onions, coarsely chopped
3 carrots, coarsely chopped
3 celery stalks, coarsely chopped
several sprigs of fresh thyme, tied together
1 teaspoon dried green peppercorns, crushed
l bunch parsley

Place the knuckle and marrow bones and optional calves foot in a very large pot with vinegar and cover with water. Let stand for one hour. Meanwhile, place the meaty bones in a roasting pan and brown at 350 degrees in the oven. When well browned, add to the pot along with the vegetables. Pour the fat out of the roasting pan, add cold water to the pan, set over a high flame and bring to a boil, stirring with a wooden spoon to loosen up coagulated juices. Add this liquid to the pot. Add additional water, if necessary, to cover the bones; but the liquid should come no higher than within one inch of the rim of the pot, as the volume expands slightly during cooking. Bring to a boil. A large amount of scum will come to the top, and it is important to remove this with a spoon. After you have skimmed, reduce heat and add the thyme and crushed peppercorns.

Simmer stock for at least 12 and as long as 72 hours. Just before finishing, add the parsley and simmer another 10 minutes. You will now have a pot of rather repulsive-looking brown liquid containing globs of gelatinous and fatty material. It doesn't even smell particularly good. But don't despair. After straining you will have a delicious and nourishing clear broth that forms the basis for many other recipes in this book.

Remove bones with tongs or a slotted spoon. Strain the stock into a large bowl. Let cool in the refrigerator and remove the congealed fat that rises to the top. Transfer to smaller containers and to the freezer for long-term storage.

The bones and such that might be hard to find at the grocery store are likely available at your local butcher or meat market if you ask. (They give the bones to my mom free! What else would they use them for?)"

Another thing that came to my mind (because you said you are exhausted) is Treasure Chest Tapes. Haha, when i was little, I LOVED listening to these tapes my mom bought me. They were just 15 minute Bible stories, but I literally wore those things out. She bought me a case of like 12 tapes (24 Bible stories.) When your little ones (and even the older ones) need a break and need to give you a break, you can just pop one of those in and say, "Time to listen to a Treasure Chest tape." You can then take 15 or 30 (if you flip the tape Wink) minutes to relax, drink some cold water and regain your wits. Or even take a little snooze. Smiley

I don't remember where my mom got those tapes, I'm going to look online and find you a link.

Also, you said you're exhausted and you can't seem to kick it. Well.......maybe you need to slow down. I'm the last person that likes to hear that, because I'm a total spaz. But, I remember when I read a book by Shonda Parker, she talked about days when the family is sick. Unless they HAVE to go out (like to the store for groceries), they stay inside, away from friends, church and normal activities, until they are well. She spoke of making it a way of life - when the family is sick, it is a time for rest. Not spreading germs (which is how you got sick in the first place) to other people, and not putting any more pressure or activity on the family then there already is from not feeling well. I would encourage you to all just take a week off. Stay at home, eat light, healthy foods. Drink herbal teas (you can go to BulkHerbStore.com and find lots of recipes for herbal teas for all kinds of teas.) Relax and enjoy the security of home.

Another thing which I found very helpful over the past week (because I was sick) was inhaling Eucalyptus oil. You can put some drops on a cloth and inhale it, or you can burn it in an oil burner (WalMart) or you can put several drops on the stove in a pot of water and simmer, or you can buy one of those steamer things (what are they called) where you put water in and they release steam for you to inhale, adding Euc. oil to it. If you have a health food store in town, they almost certainly will have Euc. essential oil and it's usually inexpensive. Euc. ess. oil is so incredible -it's ability to heal all that yucky stuff we start getting around this time (when we should be enjoying the fall and winter weather) makes it a true blessing!

I'm going to keep your family in my prayers. I hope you all get well soon.  Smiley

I found the link (or at least, one link) to the tapes. The series is number 12 on the list, so you can scroll down to see them. Looked like the site had some other tapes on there which looked good, too. Just simple Bible stories, nothing fancy. I like the idea of being able to take half an hour to rest and something to entertain the kids BESIDES the tv.  Smiley

http://www.classicshome.com/prod_bible.htm

One thing I will tell you, should you order these tapes, be sure you take those little plastic things off the top (which secure the recording on the tape, making it impossible to record over) as soon as you open the box. When I was little, I accidentally ruined two of the tapes by pressing the record button in stead of the play button.

Anyways, they're pretty cool. They're like little skits where they dramatize each story, including the crucifixion from two little boys' points of view, and the story of Ruth and Noah and Naman dunking his head (my personal favorite.)  Wink

Have any of you ever gotten one of those telephone calls from someone who called "just to chat and see how you are doing?" You're busy. You're tired. You're frustrated. But what do you say to the person on the line, "Oh, we're fine. There's been a little sickness, but we're over the worst of it."

Take it from a mama that learned the hard way. When those telephone calls come, be honest. Tell that person that you are tired and frustrated. Everyone has been sick,  you aren't taking good care of yourself, and the baby seems to be getting ill. Could they please bring a meal? Some homemade chicken soup?

Don't rob them of the blessing of ministering to your family. You may know someone that has been feeling unneeded and you didn't know it. This could be the thing God uses to confirm that He can use them -- and to bless your family -- all at the same time.

If it's shyness (or pride) set it aside and make the call. Tell someone that you need a break and then watch God meet the need.

That's my remedy and my $.02.

Ginger Root (rhizomes).  They sell them in the produce section at the grocery store.  Just cut a couple of chunks off, boil them and throw the resulting tea in the tub.  You can also get powder, but you have to find this at a specialty store, so I don't bother with it.  Some prefer it, because I don't think you have to boil it, just throw it in the tub.

You can also use dried ginger root (which is what I've used, both for baths and for muscle poultices.) I buy mine from the Bulk Herb Store. Here is the link to the Ginger Root page:  http://www.bulkherbstore.com/GRC?id=hDJQUv6R

It's also very inexpensive: $5.20 lb,  $3.10 for 1/2 lb.

My husband and daughter both have been coughing for weeks-- both coughs seem to be unproductive and are just annoying.

My husband is a professional speaker and can't be coughing-- he needs a remedy quick.

Is there anything that he can do right now to be ready for his conference this weekend?

Thanks!
