Hold a cut clove of garlic up against the bottom of your foot & you will taste garlic in your mouth in something like 1 min.

I tried this last night, and I'm sorry to report ... it DOESN'T work.

I've read through this thread and can't find any symptoms that match what my 1 yo dd has.  For the last few days, she wakes up with a very congested nose.  I've squirted saline stuff in there and within a few minutes it is pouring thick green junk.  She has a little bit of a wet cough that just sounds like the stuff going down her throat.  She doesn't cough at night at all.  By the evening, her nose has stopped running and she isn't congested anymore, but by morning it all starts over again.  I've thought maybe it is her ears so I've put garlic oil in them, as well as rubbing it on her feet.  No fever, no chest congestion.  She just acts like she doesn't feel well at all.  Maybe teething?  I don't know.  The mucus coming out of her nose seems too thick and green just to be from teething.
Any ideas?

Sounds like she'd suffering from a sinus infection. Anyway you could get grape seed extract, garlic or echinacea into her.
I've noticed a big improvement, with the breathing problem to use two pillows when battling a sinus infection and it keeps it drained. Could you put vicks under a vaporizer for her to breathe?
It's so hard with little ones sick. Sad

I've been coming down with a summer cold (ick) and have to work in an office so during the day I can't use onions and garlic or any other stinky stuff. lol (the people in the cubicles around me would riot Cheesy) So, I was so miserable today I was trying to think of what I could use.  I went to the local HFS on my lunch break and got dried shredded licorice root, sage, yellow dock root, and stevia and put some of each of these in my mesh tea ball and dropped it in hot water in my coffee cup. I added a tablespoon of 90,000 HU cayenne (I have a high tolerance for cayenne).

I drank the tea and feel soooo much better!!  Just thought I'd throw this out there for anyone who might not be able to use the more odiferous remedies. Wink

I have an almost 2yo that has had just a cough for over a week. She hacks a little and then gags at the end. She has always easily gagged, though. It has been worse at night for about 3 nights. She will have a cough attack for a few seconds, and can't breathe while it's happening. As soon as I can get to her, I sit her up to help her get control, & she proceeds to swallowing continuously for several seconds (& I can hear the air going into her belly). Then she's done for a while. This has happened 3-5 times during the night, but tonight is more often.

We have propped her up on a pillow, but she is always lying down in a sitting position when I get to her. Tonight, she gagged a bunch after the bout of coughing, but nothing came up, though it sounded like there was something there. DH has her on her stomach on his chest right now & said as soon as she rolled over to her back she started coughing. He notices noisy breathing in her chest, and the cough often sounds as if there's mucus inside, though none has been expelled.

Does anybody have a clue what this is? She hasn't had any other symptoms. I have given her teas, put eucalyptus oil with almond oil on her chest & have just used drops of the oil on her pillow. It seems to have helped for a couple of hours at a time, but the gagging & not being able to breath from the cough has us worried.

Also, my 4yo's have had a milder cough for a few days, also. They don't have near the trouble that the younger has. They are sleeping fine.

Sounds an awful lot like whooping cough.  Not a fun idea, but you're describing classic symptoms.

There's an outbreak here in MN, and there are always others around the U.S. at this time of year.

Only sure way to know is doctor visit with nasal swab for diagnosis.

mommyoftwins, i feel for your late night awakings....as all mommys do.  I have been trying to get rid of my ds cough for almost 2 weeks now....he was diagnosed with bronchitis.  The thing you have to be careful is is that you dont want this to turn into phenmonia or hospitalization.  I am thinking you need to thin out the mucous so that she can cough it out.  I dont have my shonda parker book available but she is a great resource.  Something that helped my son get over his cough was to give him oreganol oil.  It was the thing that finally got rid of it no matter how many cough concoctions i made.  I will try and remember to get back to you with some more info.

Eucolyptus oil is a humidifier soudl help tremendously as long as she is not allergic to it. I used that to really help my 6 month old get over a nasty cough. Also, Lobelia and a nerve relaxant which is used for asthma and such to keep from getting into the coughing fits. A tincture maybe better since it makes tea have a bit of a bite to it. I woudl also suggest mullien & comfrey for a tea for her. THe throat coat tea is a good one too. YOu can buy that at a store.
Also you can use the good (equal parts Olive oil, Coconut oil and garlic wizzed in blender) on her chest, back and feet. I did this as well.

Hope any of this helps.

Lobelia is great for most coughs.  Keep her well hydrated.

Mullein is also great for coughs.  Together they work very well.

The eucalyptus is great too.

To get a little one to stop coughing,  mix unsweetened cocoa, water, and honey to for a syrup.   Give them a couple of teaspoons.  This works great in the middle of the night and will stop a cough so the little one can sleep.  This will  NOT get rid of the cough tho.

I 2nd the cocoa thing. I gorgot I had given my kids one or two dark chocolate chips in the night to relax their cough reflex. I heard about this idea on Mercola's website. www.mercola.com
It really does help.

After seeing the whooping cough thread, I figured that's probably what it is. She's still waking up & having the fits & gagging. She stays asleep, though. We have been giving her vit. c, cod liver oil, bovine colostrum, Dr. Schulze's Supertonic, and an herbal expectorant by naturade. Since Monday, we have all been only eating veggies, fruit, homemade chicken broth & yogurt. I don't have any of the lobelia, oreganol or mullein. I could have my dh check at the health food store.

Oh, and I have been using eucalyptus oil on her pillow & sometimes in a rub on her chest, back, and ribs. I did a garlic poultice the other day, but haven't since. There are just so many different things to do & I don't want to overload her. Sometimes, just giving her the liquid concoctions has caused her to cough & spit. My other two haven't been choking & gagging like her, but they have really coughed harshly.

The gagging sounds more like croup.

If it is croup, if you can get her cold.  Cold helps them get their breath during a coughing fit.

I have read that opening the freezer door, and letting them breathe in the frozen cold air helps to constrict the inflamed lung tissue almost instantly for croup.

Wanted to post a couple of remedies.  This one is for congestion and my cousin shared it with me:

Lime Salt Gargle "I found out about from a Hatian lady I worked with when I was getting over the flu (and smoking still so congestion was always the last symptom to go). She took boiling hot water from the coffee machine, cut two limes in half, squeezing and dropping them in the water, poured in a bunch of salt and told me to stir it until it cools enough to not burn my mouth, then gargle and spit it out 2 or 3 times (letting the slightest bit run down my throat). Totally cleared up the congestion for hours at a time."

Also, WR has a great post on how Rabbit Tobacco helped clear up a bad case of congestion: http://www.welltellme.com/discuss/index.php/topic,19973.msg242068.html#msg242068

Sore Throat Garlic Poultice
And finally, here is a remedy that was suggested by a fellow WellTeller when my son had a really awful sore throat (tonsils and throat coated with white sores).  He'd had it for 2 days, with no signs of getting better despite eating lots of my honey garlic lemon potion.  My friend suggested that I dice up 2 cloves of garlic, and cut a paper towel in half.  Put one clove on each half and fold into a little pouch.  Pour about a T of boiling water over the garlic, and let it cool to the touch.  Apply on both sides of the neck over the tonsil area, and hold in place for 2 minutes.  We did this the second night, and the next morning, one tonsil was almost totally clear...there was marked improvement after each treatment.
Garlic, directly into the bloodstream/lymph system rocks!  I liked this much better than GOOT because it doesn't require me using my good coconut oil, it's quick, and he gets the full strength of the garlic every time.

Any advice on keeping a cold specifically out of the lungs? I have been fighting off a cold - fairly successfully - but today I can feel it moving to my lungs and ginger (almost constantly drinking it for 2 days), elderberry, and oregano oil don't seem to be working. This happens to me almost every time I get a cold. I have tried breathing eucalyptus oil in the past and it doesn't seem to work, perhaps I am using it wrong. Do anti-virals just not work as well with viruses that are airborne in the lungs? What can I do to specifically protect my lungs? I know this little tiny bit of a cold that was never even really there will now become a cough that lasts for several weeks. Sheesh, sometimes I feel like I have no immune system left and if it weren't for herbs I'd be sick all the time!

Do a quick search for Rabbit Tobbaco on WTM.  It's supposed to be fantastic for knocking colds/phlegm, etc.

Or try Mullein -  burning it as incense.

Also, Grapefruit Peel Tea.

Red Clover Tea is good for congestion, as well.

One of our family favorites for getting rid of or preventing congestion is thuja; aka arbor vitae.   I usually throw in some red clover when I brew it.

When a cold comes on I am sure to rub garlic oil all over the chest area to help keep the stuff out of the chest.

The only other thing that I have used for this is fresh thyme in honey.

Like thyme tea?

That's a good idea, start treating the chest/lungs before the cold ever thinks to go there.

I don't have rabbit tobacco or mullein. They are on the list for next time I make an order!

I made a eucalyptus rub for the baby and me, I am burning pine needles so hopefully I don't burn the house down, and I am going to add cayenne, yarrow, and sage to my ginger tea (I remembered I have had success with yarrow for a cold). I already eat a lot of garlic. At least it might help my nursing baby's cold if it doesn't help me.

I mentioned this in the swine flu thread, but last week I successfully fought off the swine flu that the rest of my family had by constantly drinking ginger tea with elderberry, taking some oregano oil, vitamin C, and later on, pine needles in tea. Then I let up for one day and caught a cold. I am convinced that it is easier to fight off the swine flu than the common cold!
