I just have to say that we've had a nasty cold in our house and in addition to doing what I already knew-that being lots of soups and teas, I got on here and checked out the tips you all posted.
My baby ended up with croup, which after treating it with steam, hot and cold, garlic compresses, goot and such by evening he was better. I've been dosing the older ones with garlic and honey, and lots of tea as well. They've been gargling with salt water and trying any concoctions I give them...it's just nice to know that these things do work! They still had the cold but as someone said they're body is "kickin' it" or as my kids would say "the goods are winning"
Thanks to all of your insights!

Hi all! I am new to posting here but I HAVE been reading all the great posts for a few weeks now. I am in quite a bit of a quandry I think.
I have the books ABC Herbal & the How To Herb Book. So far I have all the vitamins I need for "mega-vitamin thereapy" & everything to make "Children's Composition" (Yarrow, Elderberry, Peppermint) I just do not have the glycerite yet. It is on order. I also have Cayenne pepper, and the Bulk herb store's Rise N Shine tea and Sleepy Time tea. I have capsules of Echinacea & Golden Seal. Beeyoutiful's Tummy Tune Up and Super Mom for me. I have plenty of garlic, honey, & a few onions. We are broke for the next few days so I'd really can't afford to get much more than what I've been able to accumulate this month.
My whole family (6) are in various stages of coming down with a nasty chest cold. My 4 year old woke up with it from a nap giving me no warning that he was getting sick until it was already a bad case, waking up later that night with the croup. I have doctored him in various ways over the last 3 days and he has responded to something I've done. I'm not sure which one of the things I've done worked but he is getting better, still has a nasty congested cough but better.
My question is: of all the things I've listed is there a logical method to carry out treatment? I've been doing teas, garlic oil, eating garlic, ACV steam, humidifier, onion/raw honey syryp etc. etc. etc.  Undecided
I do not have what I need to do enemas, nor do I have glyceryite (sp?) yet.
I am also worried about giving too much Vit. C, Echinacea, Golden Seal...
Are they dangerous in large doses??
Any help or comments would be greatly appreciated as I am certain the next few days are going to be quite miserable with the others and myself coming down with this bug. Thank you!!!

Well, I finally got over my cough from a few weeks ago. However, after several days of nearly non-stop coughing, I developed a sore spot in my throat that will not go away. This spot has been hurting, with the same intensity and no change in location, for almost 2 weeks. I have no other symptoms than this. It hurts to swallow (especially liquids and after not having swallowed for a little while, like at night), to talk very loudly, and to sing. It feels like a bruise from coughing so much, but it seems like it would have started healing by now. Could this be something serious? Anyone else ever heard of anything like this?

You might have a raw or just irritated place in your throat.  That would make sense to me.  But - since your throat is in constant use (breathing, talking, swallowing), it takes longer to heal than other irritated places.

Given the timing of the soreness, I would not be concerned if it was myself... just irritated.

Here is some info I found for sore throats (sorry if it is a repeat):
Use gargles of sage, salt water, garlic and Cayenne.
Calendula also helps decrease inflammation in the throat and heal tissue damage.
Yarrow or meadowsweet also help to decrease inflammation and pain.

Sore Throat Tea:
1 thumb size piece of ginger root chopped.
Pour boiling water over chopped root and steep for 10 minutes.
Add 1 teaspoon of honey, 1 teaspoon lemon juice, one small pinch of cayenne powder.
Drink several cups per day.

I have not tried this yet.  My natropath gave me the information.
If anyone tries it, let us know how it works.

Well, my 4 yr old twins are on day 9 of their chest cold that is now a head cold. They sound no better than they did the first day. I can't get them to understand how to blow their nose so all that gunk is just staying in there or getting swallowed UGH!
Their chest sound awful and I can't get them to cough of that junk either.
I am almost to the point of giving "real" meds to them this morning as it appears all my treatments are failing me.
My dear hubby after 2 days with his symptoms took Nyquil to sleep last night. I so far am able to handle the symptoms without meds...
My older 2 children haven't gotten it yet. I have them on vitamin therapy and they are eating the same raw/whole food diet we are except I am allowing them to drink our raw milk because they have no congestion.
I am a little (o.k. a lot) disappointed that our first real sickness I was unable to prevent/cure using my newfound knowledge. Hopefully this is something that will come with experience.
My dh is wanting to take the twins to the Dr. tommorrow just to make sure it's not bronchitis or pneumonia or even a sinus infection.
Any thoughts or encouraging words?  Undecided
BTW I did make my first batch of GOOT and it is working wonders on my daughters poison ivy! So that is one success I can record in my books!! YAY!  Smiley

I haven't used the GOOT on the twins but they have ingested garlic a lot in the beginning for about 4 days..." also did an onion poultice on their feet for 3 nights.
I have a post earlier in this thread of the various things I have to treat them with.
Maybe you could look at that and give me a suggestion?
They absolutely hate tea so I have to give them spoonfulls at a time...
I also had them on vitamin therapy but the last 2 days wasn't as vigilant with it because it didn't seem to work? They were on mega vitamin therapy for a week.
I did purchase Eucalyptus oil and that helps clear them up some but doesn't get rid of the congestion in their chest.
Thank you for trying to help!

God bless,

i looked over your list, and if it were me i would have them on TTU twice a day, and slather GOOT all over them 3x a day.  i am a rather simple person and dislike complicated or time consuming stuff so i have settled on these two things because they are easy.  i used to use chewable echinacea, but it didnt' seem to work very well.  i have been using these two things this winter and am totally SOLD on them both.  I  Kiss GOOT!!!  my 19 mo. has never had an antibiotic--only GOOT!  i hope you like it as much as i do!   Grin

My family has been dealing with this for over a week now!  My kids have been relatively okay, just runny nose until yesterday/this morning.  Yesterday, my dd eye had been gunky - both this morning.  I found the honey water method on the Pink Eye/Conjunctivitis message thread and put two drops in each eye this morning.  We'll see how that goes.  My son this morning sounds more congested so we'll need to do something about him now.

My hubby and I have had head congestion (sinus pressure) and Wednesday morning (after the salt water bath Tuesday), this was relieved, but went down more in my throat and chest.  We both have been coughing and hacking up green or yellow or white stuff until we feel like half a lung or more is missing!

This is what I've done:
1 salt water bath (ran out of salts!)
Garlic tea 3 times a day for 2 days now.  I make a cup of reg decaf tea and drop in a peeled garlic clove to steep with the tea.  I leave it in the tea as I drink it so I can get plenty of garlic.  (the hubby makes his own concoction of garlic cocoa  Roll Eyes)

Last night, I woke up at two AM hearing gas come out of me like a machine gun.  It smelled like garlic.  I ran to the bathroom and had diarrhea that smelled like garlic.

So now I'm not sure if I should have more garlic tea or what!  What should we do to get rid of this mess!  My son is 5 and my dd is 2.

I would have made some GOOT, but someone needs to go to the store and get more garlic!  Maybe I'll drag myself down there today.

Any and all help would be appreciated!

I would keep doing the garlic.

Lobelia might help with whatever is still in your chests.

Have you tried eucalyptus?

The salt water baths are great. When you are done with the bath (make sure it is a HOT one) wrap up in warm clothing and get under the covers. Maybe sweating will help you get this stuff out.

If you start to dehydrate or you want to clean any of you out you could do some good old fashioned enemas.

Also, no animal protein. IF you eat make sure it is just fruits (cleansing) and vegetables (healing).

Sambucol - black elderberry syrup with echinacea.  Also, cold-eze, which is just basically zinc.  Every 4 hours/ 4 times a day.  Knocks out our yucks in 24hrs.

Thanks for the tips!  I will continue the garlic.  I figure it is cleaning me out and has to start somewhere.

The Lobelia and Eucalyptus are out since I live in the boonies and we are on a very tight budget (so no ordering stuff  Sad).  We do have Baby Vicks that has Eucalyptus in it, I think.  But it really just treats a sypmtom, right.  It won't really get at the cause of this, right?

I'm heading to the store for more garlic to make GOOT and garlic/onion poultices.  We'll go from there.

I just saw Patti's post:  Where do you get black elderberry syrup??  I'm guessing that is more stuff to order.  Sad  I'm hoping when we get things straightened out with our budget we can get some things to have on hand (that will be a topic for another post)  Wink  Thanks though!

Any other tips would also be appreciated.   Smiley

She is right, Elderberries are great. If you live in the Boonies you should look for the plant in the spring and collect the flowers at the right time. Then you won't have to mail order for them.

It's very unlikely that garlic caused your diarrhea.  Diarrhea is just another way for the body to rid itself of toxins.  Garlic is a good way to go.  To help slow diarrhea if it becomes severe, take some probiotics.  I recommend Tummy Tuneup Original Formula, but if you don't have any, then take what you can find, including yogurt, kefir and other fermented foods.

Many of our members just rave about GOOT and I'm sure it's wonderful, but if you can stomach it, I would just eat the garlic straight.  You'll get a fuller, faster effect.  I just chop it pill size and swallow it with water.  For me, it works to clear sinus and chest congestion within minutes.  Garlic farts  Roll Eyes are just one of those unavoidable side effects of getting well.  Don't worry though, they will soon be joined by garlic feet, garlic sweat and garlic breath.  Grin

Thanks HB!

I have started just eating a whole clove 3x a day myself and gave up on the garlic tea.  Still no change.  Dh and I are coughing and hacking and talking hoarse all day long.

My dd is who I'm most worried about (see the Pink Eye thread).  Both her eyes look sorta like black eyes only pink (hence the name pink eye I guess).  I hope she gets over that soon.

I've started just giving the kids chopped garlic covered in honey, too.  I'm going to give them half a clove 3x a day.

If we aren't better by Monday I'm going to have a tough time convincing dh to not take us all to the doctor.   Sad

I messed up a batch of Goot.  It pays to read the link and not just mix up what someone's post said.  The link said 3 T of minced garlic and 3 T of coconut oil only.  I put the 3 T of olive oil too and it is much too runny.  I didn't use the blender either, just mixed it all up so it is chunky too.  Ya live and learn right!?  Wink

don't throw it out!  you can blend it, strain it and refrigerate it and it will set up into a paste.  then when you use it, it "melts" onto the skin.

Oh no, I didn't throw it out.   Smiley  I've been using it as a poultice on myself, but it is rather messy.

It has been in the fridge and it turned solid, rock solid.  I think it is the olive oil in it or something.  I'll try blending it and see though.   Smiley

No, you didn't mess it up. Reread the link. It DOES call for 3 T minced garlic, 3 T coconut oil AND 3 T olive oil. Without the olive oil, you'll have a garlic brick instead of a salve. It was runny because it is a liquid when you make it. Refrigerating it causes it to firm up into a salve. HTH

This is the theme song around our house right now:

This is the cold that never ends,
It just goes on and on and spreads.
Some people started coughing not knowing what it was,
And they'll continue coughing just because...

This is the cold that never ENDS!!!   Cheesy

Our son had what looked like the start of Pink Eye last night.  We sprayed honey water in it and it looks great this morning!

Abby's eyes were still gunky, but the whites of the eyes are white.  She still looks like someone punched her and gave her a 'pink' eye, though.  So, she and I are staying home from church (I wish I could go and just sit in the back, but we have some very germophobic people.  Sad).

James and I are still coughing, hacking and blowing noses, but our voices are coming back on occasion.  I'm out of garlic and neither of us can make it to the store until this evening (he is the preacher and has responsibilities, and I'm watching the kids - don't really want to take Abby out in this cold, cold weather.)  I hope the lack of garlic today doesn't cause us to go backwards.

I still do have the mixed up batch of goot.  At the Fridge temp it is rock hard, but at room temp it has become like a salve, although it melts quickly on my hands and makes a mess!  I did put some on Xander's feet last night and some in his ear as he was complaining of an earache (which is gone today!), and I've put some on a washrag on my chest as a poultice, but other than that I haven't used it.

It has been 10-11 days now of dealing with our junk and 5 days of dealing with Abby's Pink Eye.  I'm ready to see the end of this thing!

you may not like this taste though it really isnt bad at all. it is "guaranteed" to get someone over strep in 24-48 hours. i just made a batch with my children this morning and its all gone;-) children take this rather easy because of the honey

5-6 cloves"preferably organic
2-3 T raw honey (listed with top 12 herbs in "antibiotics")
1/8-1/4 ts. or more cayenne

squeeze the garlic through a press into honey adn cayenne
take a tablespoon every 2 or so hours for a day or till cured:-)

Has anyone used the eucalyptus oil and had instantaneous croup? I was trying to use it to help my boys get over there congested sinuses and chests w/ possible sore throat. A couple drops in the bath water seemed fine, but a few drops inside their pillows made both of them so instantly tight I was a bit frightened.  You know what I mean...that tighteness that makes you wonder if they are going to take another breath or not  Shocked Then I got a sore throat and got a rag w/ a couple drops of oil to breath and whoa!!! my throat instantly got sooo raw and sore.  Huh Any ideas?

I went back to Vicks for this time. Besides the petroleum base what's bad about vicks? and how could a make my own mixture of menthol, camphor, and eucalyptus?

Sounds like maybe you had TOO MUCH eucalyptus. Straight eucalyptus vapors are STRONG. I alway use eucalyptus mixed with olive or coconut oil as a chest rub & in the medicine cup of a vaporizer or floated on water in a simmer pot. With the vaporizer & simmer pot it can get too strong sometimes. You can also get a little plug in thing at the HFS that has pads that you put the ess. oil on & it dissapates the oil into the air. We have one that plugs into the cigarette lighter that DH uses in his truck.

The other possibility is that it wasn't organic & you were reacting to some kind of pesticide residue in the oil. One last thing that comes to mind is that the manufacturer used solvents to extract the oil & you were reacting to solvent residue.

The petroleum base IS what's bad about Vicks, other than that it's just ess. oils. You can mix ess oils with coconut oil & use it instead of Vicks. Eucalyptus is good that way & if you want you can add any or all of the following: mint, (menthol) camphor, thyme, oreganol. There's others you can use, that's what I can think of right now. I usually just use eucalyptus in the coconut oil & that's it. I make a small jar of it, keep it in the fridge, (make sure that no one is going to eat it Tongue) warm it up when I need it. We use the same mix for chest rub & liniment for sore muscles. It doesn't have to be refrigerated but it stays fresher that way. HTH Blessings ~herbalmom

An update: I put mint (menthol) on the list because it is good for chest colds but I don't use it myself when I make this. Well, the other day I used eucalyptus & peppermint. I love this combination in the vaporizer but I won't use mint in a ointment for chest congestion again. It's too cooling on the skin & makes you feel like you have a chill. Might be good to make an Icy/Hot kind of thing for sore muscles but not for chest congestion. I thought I would let everybody know. HTH Blessings ~herbalmom

Where do you get camphor?

I have some old-fashioned Watkins menthol camphor.  I picked it up fairly cheaply at the Cracker Barrel or somwhere unexpecting like that.  Some grocers may even have it.  I can't honestly remember where I got it, but I have it.

That may be an alternative if you do not live near a health food store, like me!!  The nearest one is an hour away so it is not convenient when I need something quick!  I thank God for remedies we can use food for.

I forgot to mention on this thread one of my first courses of action when dealing with congestion. I had forgotten because it had been a while  Undecided since our family had dealt with this. . .

OH WELL, this last month has been a refresher course  Tongue

One of the first things I recommend when you feel yourself becoming congested is to take a laxative -- not an enema -- but some form of laxative to clean the digestive tract from the top down. When the body is trying to rid itself of something (this is especially true with allergies) it produces lots of goop. That stuff gets all through your digestive tract and can cause even more mucus production as the body reacts to its presence. So, a gentle cleanse is a good first line of defense against invading bacteria and/or viruses.

It's not all in your head.  Wink

Another helpful hint is to use various means of immune support. Alternate days with garlic and echinacea or some other immune boosting agent. This weakens whatever is attacking your system by throwing it a little off. It also gives the receptors in your body that utilize one thing a break while reinforcements from another remedy take over. HTH

One of the first things I recommend when you feel yourself becoming congested is to take a laxative -- not an enema -- but some form of laxative to clean the digestive tract from the top down.

Do you have a recommended?  Or a "for this age, I use this but for another age/need I use that"?
