My 7 yo boy has a headache and has had it since last evening.  He has never had a headache b/f and I think it is sinus b/c he said it is in the front.  He threw up this morning and I think b/c his head hurts.  He is on a major natural regimen to heal some of his organs and a pretty strict diet as far as nothing with sugar caffeine or anything like that.  I have no car today to go anywhere plus I dont' want to give him any drug type stuff although I did give him some childrens tylenol last night about  midnight b/c he woke up bawling.  Can anyone help? would rubbing goot on his head help? what about the ginger bath?  I'm distressed and at a loss b/c he is taking so much stuff that he should not have ANY problems right now IMO  Undecided

You can usually buy a pepperment stick at your local health food store that looks like a chapstick... just rub a little on his sinus area... that might relieve some pain.. or at least distract him from it with the cooling effect..  Undecided

The ginger bath is a good idea.  It's good for any immune problems (tummy or face).  It sure couldn't hurt.  My kids have been taking ginger baths before nap for the last couple of days for sinus.  It helps open them up and even makes them a bit sleepy and helps them rest.  I also add a few drops of eucalyptus to the bath to help open them up and sooth any soreness in the throat.  It's also a natural antibiotic.   Grin

One girl in our church had severe and frequent headaches.  They finally found that the trigger for her was meats such as hot dogs-- which have nitrites in them.  Luncheon meats, bacon, some sausages, and so forth all contain these.  When  she stopped eating them, her headaches also stopped.  I don't know how these cause headaches, but you might research this further and try eliminating anything like this from the diet, if you have not already.

I have headaches daily...DAILY! I know it isn't the best thing to do, but I usually take a Goody Powder to help relieve it. Yes, I know, Goody powders are not good for you. I have suffered from neurologia twice before...once I was hospitalized for it (I literally thought that I was going to die from the shooting pain in my head). So, I know that some of my headaches are rebound headaches from taking the powders or tylenols...but what do you do when your head aches so bad and you have children to teach, laundry to do, supper to cook, dishes to wash and so on and so on...and then if I feel bad, sometimes I find myself being short with my kids and I don't like that....so to keep going, I take the meds to get rid of the headaches. So, how do you get rid of headaches?

Have you tried lemon water? It has worked on my headaches, which sound much less frequent and severe..., when I have drank it before my headache gets really bad. Another thing to try is the juice of one lemon in 1 qt. of water with a little stevia or maple syrup, 3x a day. I hope you get some relief from this soon!

I know some say that headache is the first sign of dehydration so you may want to increase fluids.  For me, aside from allergies, headache means hormones are out of wack...usually pregnant.  I also used to get bad headaches when I was having problems ith blood sugar.  I would try to find your trigger first.  headache medicines...even herbal ones tend to just mask the symptom.  If you can find what is causeing your headaches than you can prevent the headaches from occuring.  for example.  My biggest allergen is mold.  The house I lived in as a teenager had a BAD mold problem, and I had just about daily headaches (not to mention queasiness).  When I moved out of the house the problem stopped.  I'm sorry.  I'm sure this is nothing you haven't heard.  There are a few tricks to try to get rid of a headache, but you really will need to find what is causing them so you won't get them as often.  Smiley   Magnesium is supposed to help migraines and tension headaches.  Peppermint and chamomile tea might help some too.  They help relax you.

I had bad migraines....to the point of vomiting (which helped the headache somewhat!) for almost a year. First, we figured out the it was mostly stress. The headaches were a reaction to my stress. I didn't feel stressed, tense or anything like that at all. For me, (this sounds bad), most of my headaches went away when the stress went away....our 11yr old fosterson!!! Before that I was in the ER twice and received shots. If now I feel a headache coming on, I just call it an easy day and drink lots of water and try try try to stay away from my only relief....ibeprofen (I have only RECENTLY read all the stuff on it, so I am going to find something else I think!).......exercise, water and good sleep (another cause...my ds3 was nuring only at night EVERY 2 HOURS!!! at 18months...weaned him and got sleep)

I would suggest writing down what you eat or watching how well you sleep as well as make sure you are drinking enough water. And watch the stress factor....I have 3 boys (8,4,2)...we watch another 2yr old boy during the day AND we have 2 teen fostergirls (they are in school though)..........and I am a pastor's wife..........STRESS MANAGEMENT!!!!

In addition to upping my water intake (pure water), I would consider putting some cayenne on a cotton swab and placing it in the sinus cavity. It will BURN! So try this when the kids aren't in need of your attention. But if you've ever had a head-bursting headache, and have tried everything else, it's worth a try.

You hit the nail on the head Rebekah! I know I don't drink as much water as I should, so I'm definitely going to increase my water intake, and see if that helps any.

Well, I read way too much at night and I don't have as good of lighting as I should in my room, so that is probably my problem. I will experience occassional headaches when I am constipated. I use herbal products for my bowels and they move easily twice a day. I also try not to eat a lot of mucus forming foods. Such as white stuff (sugar, white flour, pastas, milk products). This type of food restriction will also greatly help the sinuses.

I have suffered from Migranes since I was a teen, at least as far a I can remember.    I know some are hormonal and some are stress but I am beginnig to realize that some are related to the barometric pressure.   This past summer we had some really unstable weather, tornadoes and such, for about a week and I had a headache all week plus off and on for about the next month when the weather was stableizing.   I know it sounds strange but even my chiropractor tells me that it is true.   I never have gotten relief from diet changes, chiroprator adjustments, lemon water or any of the other things mentioned.  I ususall have to go to bed with an ice pack to my head.   Really hard to do when you have young children but mine are all old enough to take care of themselves now.   Before we would have family rest time.
Sure wish someone would come up with a cure.   Smiley

For those who said they get headaches every day - I used to get them every day, several times a day, too. They weren't real intense but they were increasing so I went to a few different doctors. The first one said "Take some Advil." (Like I didn't know that! I wanted to know why I was getting them, not how to get rid of the symptoms! This is one of the incidents that put me on the path to being more "natural"!) The second one told me to get my wisdom teeth out, which I did, and it didn't help. Finally the third one told me the most common cause of headaches is called TMJ disorder - I can't remember what it stands for but it's pain that comes from clenching your jaw muscle. Do you grind your teeth or chew on pens? Do you chew gum a lot? I was blessed in that once I knew why they were happening, I became aware of the times I was clenching my jaw (I was under a lot of stress at the time), or chewing my pens, or chewing a lot of gum or chewy food, and I stopped, and so did the headaches!

Now I get migraines occasionally and I've narrowed the cause to being dehydrated. I think when I am having any kind of hormonal surge due to the time of month or pregnancy, they are more likely, but it's always because I am dehydrated. But drinking water once they start doesn't help immediately, in fact, it makes them hurt worse. I have heard that caffeine will help headaches because it opens up those capillaries in your head and gets the blood flowing. It seems to work for me, to a point.  Also, I think it was Practical Herbalism that said a thyme and cayenne tincture rubbed on the forehead would help.

Someone here mentionee lemon juice.  That is because fresh lemon is very alkaline forming, and an acidic body ph causes headaches in many people.  Look up a  list of alkaline/acid forming foods.  I hear 80% of our diet should be alkaline and 20% should be acidic.  Most of us are probably acidic. My hubby works 3rd shift, so drinking a thermos of coffee each night is not a big deal for him.  Tongue Well, since being on Christmas break, he has had very little coffee. Tonight he got a major migraine headache.
Getting him off coffee would probably be impossible, that is the only thing that keeps him awake at night, but I am thinking the headache is probably a withdrawl from the coffee.
Is there anything I can do for him to speed up the withdrawl? Tomorrow night, he'll be drinking it again, so I didn't know if there was anything I should do at all.

Caffeine withdrawal is a possibility, but coming from a coffee drinker, I would surmise there is something else causing the headache.  I drink coffee like water in the winter and don't drink any in the summer and the only thing I ever notice in transition is I feel a bit sluggish the first couple of days I don't have any.  I used to suffer from very severe migraines, but in my case it was aspartame.  If it is in fact the coffee, then give him some coffee and he should be fine, but if it's something else, you may want to research the cause(s) and go from there.

My DH drinks 1-2 cups of coffee a day during the week, and on weekends and vacation days he gets very bad headaches until he makes coffee. I do think it's withdrawl. He wants to switch to Kombucha, but our first batch is still brewing, so he doesn't know if it will be a good sub or not... just our experience. oh, and drinking LOTS of water helps the headaches a lot too, as well as Green Tea.

I end up with a headache when I go into a lot of places too. Sometimes I get dizzy & have a hard time breathing. Perfumes, cleaners, plastics, not enough air circulation, BLEH... Fresh air helps some but mostly you have to give it time to clear your system. If you have anything that helps support the body's detoxification system it might help speed it up. Hope your feeling better soon. Blessings ~herbalmom

I have been diagnosed with what the doctor has called "migraine variant headaches".
Here's what I know:
-The headaches started over seven months ago as chronic tension headaches{my previous self-diagnosis}, which have developed into migraines in the past two months.
-I am sensitive to light and noise during the headache and very recently has become nauseated as well during the headache.
-The pain seems to be mainly on the right side of my head and is usually a sharp pain.
-I work part-time and love my job, so it is not from any stress there.
-I do love to read so I was wondering if eyestrain could be a problem? However, I don't have aura (sp?) {usually vision disturbances} before headaches.
-I don't think that they are hormonal as the headaches are pretty much the same no matter what time of the month it is. I do take red raspberry capsules, albeit infrequently.
-For some reason, the headaches are at their worst in the evening before I go to bed (making falling asleep very difficult) and when I wake up .
-Also, when I bend over the pain is worse.
-The doctor has put me on Depakote for six months to hopefully take care of it. (If anyone has any more info on Depakote, feel free to post it on the Depakote thread that I started. http://www.welltellme.com/discuss/index.php/topic,7435.0.html)

Which brings me to my questions:
-This drug can cause liver toxicity. Is there an herb that I could take to help to protect my liver?
-It also brings a risk of pancreatitis (sp?). My mom has diabetes so could this put me at a higher risk?
-What herbal remedies besides feverfew could I try?
-Any suggestions on how to identify the triggers of these headaches?

Thanks for any suggestions or help you may have!

Sorry for all the pain everyone is in! Embarrassed I thought I'd put in my 2 cents...

I have read in my herbal book that you can drink 2000 mg Emergen-C along with a large dose of caffien (coffee) and it will help avert the headache (migraine).

Yesterday (Mother's Day) I had a BAD headache, and felt like vomiting...I was told it was a migraine.. So I decided to test this "idea" of averting the headache.

I drank both the 2000 mgs of Emergen-C along with a cup of coffee....I got distracted... Then I realized that my headache really was gone! It worked!! Thank God!! I hope this help someone!!

Have you gone to the chiropractor for an adjustment?  I know you mentioned you don't think it is hormonal, but I still would try the Evening primrose oil just in case.  Also I would try the cayenne.
Also a rub of coconut oil, lavender, peppermint and eucalyptus oils is very soothing.

I have seen some excellent results with migraines by chiropractic treatment.  I had a friend who was having migraines that lasted for several days and her Dr. had her on some serious meds to dilate blood vessels to relieve them - wasn't working.  I took her to chiropractor for her first couple of visits, but she had already decided to continue on her own after immediate relief at first visit.   He helped her to get off the meds and detox, also.
Cayenne is a good vasodilator (blood vessels), also increases blood flow to the area.  This is great for helping migraines.
