  Coffee Creamer Substitute
« on: October 26, 2006, 05:38:01 PM » by Grace
My DH likes his coffee very much. But the creamer is pretty unhealthy. Any ideas on a tasty and cheap substitute?

I like my coffee too and used use the creamers until I found out what was in them.  I still have to have cream though so I use real cream (I wish I could find raw) and vanilla.  It's not super cheap but I don't have to use as much so it turns out cheaper than the creamer.  I just started sweetening it with honey and that is very good! If you like the flavor, whole coconut milk.

The real cream with vanilla sounds wonderful!!! I am going to try this very soon. I have used the bad stuff for a long time and was quite unaware of the unhealthy stuff in it. Thanks for this posting.

Isn't the powdered stuff in moderation better than homogenized milk or cream.  Raw pure is always better, but that is not an option for me...

I use skim milk in my coffee to minimize these effects.  I've been meaning to ask if anyone knows if heavy cream is homogenized.

I went from non dairy creamer (powdered) to 1/2 and 1/2 because of all the chemicals in the powder stuff.  Then I realized that the 1/2 and 1/2 was homogenized so I went to the heavy whipping cream.  I like it in my coffee and I use less than the 1/2 and 1/2.  I use it in my mashed potatoes if I have enough...YUM.  My whipping cream does not say that it is homogenized, but only pasteurized, the 1/2 and 1/2 said "homogenized".

See my post on the homogenized milk thread, HB.  I just answered that for you there.

I second the cream and vanilla and natural sweetener that jm3collum mentioned.  If you can find nonultrapasteurized, like at Whole Foods, even better.  Here it's $2.29 for a pint.  I stock up and freeze them.

I always use milk and ran out the other day.  I tried some plain powdered milk.  Tasted just like coffee creamer.  Grin

But I thought powdered milk was "bad" too, even worse than reg. hom. milk??? I'm so  confused! I think I'll chunk my coffee and creamer and go with water!

i thought all the whipping cream was homogenized to, so it looks all creamy.  i will look again, what brand are you buying?  i may just start mixing my own if i can get unhomo cream.   Wink

I don't think cream is homogenized.  The homogenization process is just mixing some parts cream with some parts skim, right?  When we get our raw milk, the cream is on top and at the place we used to get raw milk she would sell quarts of cream that was thick and consistent in texture but, of course, she didn't homogenize it.  I'm pretty sure it would be completely unnecessary to homogenize cream, I just don't think it separates at all.

It's pretty standard to homogenize cream to prevent any separation which might cause the product to look "undesirable" to the purchasing public.  If the package doesn't specifiy that it's unhomogenized, then assume that it most likely is.  Many people have called their favorite companies because of lack of labeling only to be disappointed.   Undecided

Keep in mind whether powdered milk is bad or not, I'm not allergic to it and as far as I know it's not flammable.  I can't say this about coffee creamer.  Grin
