I have been brewing Kombucha since Nov. or Dec.  my family loves it and drinks it often with no side effects.  However, I do get a side effect from drinking it.  Everytime I drink it I get violently ill (vomiting) from it.  At first, I thought maybe I was doing something wrong in my brewing or in the time that I let it sit to carbonize, but since no one else gets sick from drinking it, this tells me that the problem is with me.

Does anyone know why it would be making me get this ill?

I'd be thinking either candida or allergy to something in the kombucha, but since it's only tea and sugar and a few probiotic cultures, I'd probably be thinking candida or possibly some other type of toxic overload.

How much does it take for you to throw up?  1 oz, 8 oz??  How long after you drink it, do you get sick?  If you have a severe case of candida and you kill enough of them off at one time, you can vomit, have diarrhea, etc.

Do you have any other symptoms?  Check this thread.

The first time, I drank about 2 oz. this time I took less than 1 oz.
I drink this before I eat my supper, and it happens after I go to bed, it wakes me with not much time to make it to the bathroom (thankfully we have a bathroom in our bedroom).

Vomitting is the only symptom, no diarrhea.

Now I am off to check the thread, thank you HB!

My son tried the Kombuch and his eyes got all puffy and he said his throat felt a little swollen.   He was on his way back to college at the time and it was the only thing he had to drink in his car so I'm sure it was the Kombucha.   I had him take some benadryll but his eyes were swollen for a day.
Weird.   No one else has had any reaction to it.

Ok, i dont have time to go through every page so i was wondering if anyone could tell me if its safe to drink bucha while nursing. I just thought about that.

I do it often - just be careful the baby doesn't grab the glass.  The spill makes a terrible mess.  Just kidding - yes, it's fine.

sarah, or anyone else--is it safe to begin drinking kombucha while pregnant?  i was thinking of sharing a baby with my sister, but she's never had it before, so i wasn't sure if she should wait.  what do ya'all think?

From the timing of BeeyoutifulGirl's posts & her baby birth announcement - I would guess they believe it's fine.  I have no personal experience myself though.  I know I saw "OK for pregnancy" somewhere - but since I don't remember which site it was I can't say with certainty that it was a reliable source.

I personally would feel safe drinking it while pregnant.

It is not unusual for me to have between a pint and a quart daily.  And I'm not dead yet.

I think we're all having some detox stuff w/ our kombucha...I had a terribly itchy rash and night sweats...my children seem to be doing the same.  We're taking a break for now.   Sad  Hard to pinpoint the cause, but I'm looking at that Herxheimer reaction...

Interesting.  I too had an immediate reaction by vomiting after swallowing my first batch ( about four ounces of it I think).  At the time I was pregnant and since I was uncertain I just gave up the brewing of it for the time being.  After jumping into this forum I'm excited about starting up again and giving it another try!

Hi Rebekah...I would love to hear more about your cranberry kombucha.  I was making regular kombucha a lot last summer..but now I'm pregnant and quit because I too read it wasn't safe for the pregnant or nursing mommy to drink.  You say you drink it when you're pregnant with no ill effect??  Maybe I'll try it in smaller quantities..also what's the Water Cure??  Take care Smiley

One thing I must add, is that I don't think I drank enough water w/ it...I remember Gabe saying to make sure you drank enough water w/ 'bucha, since it's a diuretic.   Embarrassed

I love the taste of my kombucha, but it makes me nausea. Sad I know I have a yeast problem but I'm nursing so I am not being very aggressive about treating it. I was drinking about 4-8 ounces day. I also would have a slight headache. I gave up drinking it because I didn't know if it was bad for my son. Hubby, who has a pretty LARGE yeast problem, drank a large  glass and had a stomach ache as well.
I'm afraid it is too much detoxing while nursing...should I stop drinking it? Actually, I've taken a break but I have some brewing and some in the 'fridge.
Any advice?

I'm curious about this too! If it kills candida in the intestinal tract then is that harmful to a nursing child?  I can understand if it were heavy metals or chemicals etc, that might enter the bloodstream and get into the breastmilk, but if it is only cleaning the GI (and where ever else candida thrives) then would it contaminate the milk?  And if it is a diuretic then will it inhibit milk production?  I'm anxious to hear some thoughts, tho I'm going ahead with brewing, I hope to get the rest of the family drinking it!

Since we have the slowest dial up internet speed in the world, I haven't read all 5,000 pages about Kombucha. So, is it ok to start drinking this the first time while nursing?Huh I think I want to try it, but am unsure about the baby. She is 6 weeks old, and I am very careful about what I take. Thanks

It should be fine, just start off slow.  Drink maybe 4 oz. a day and see how both you and baby do.  I started drinking it while nursing my dd & we both did fine.

I don't know about the candida issue, but I think (don't know for sure) that the diuretic nature is partly due to the caffeine & partly the contents of the bucha.  And it's pretty mild (in my experience).  I have been drinking it since our youngest was 6-8 weeks old and never had a production drop related to starting or increased volume of kombucha (but mine is 100% herbal- no caffeine).

My dear friend is having a side effect that I don't see on here anywhere.  She thinks she is going nuts.  Grin  I introduced here to the tea last a couple of weeks ago and she just started drinking her first batch this week.  She really likes it but called last night a little concerned.  She did a lot of gardening yesterday and she was hot and sweaty.  She says she could smell the tea in her sweat.  Embarrassed She was a little freaked out.  She asked me to get to "my group" online and ask if anyone else has had this and what she should do.  My only suggestion was MORE WATER.  She said she was not drinking enough water.  Anyone else ever heard of this or have suggestions for her.

Thanks!

Sounds like detox to me.  Maybe she just drank too much at one time.  When I eat a lot of garlic, I sweat and smell like an Italian restaurant.  Wink

I am scheduled for a c-section at the end of this month. I have been drinking kombucha for many months now, but was wondering if I should stop since I am having surgery.  I had heard somewhere that it is a blood thinner, but I also recently read an article that a scientist concluded that it is not a blood thinner. Has anyone drank it up to having any type of surgery?

Thanks!

My sister and I read on Wikipedia that 'bucha can make medications, less effective. They specifically meniton birth control. She wanted me to ask if this is true. Do any of you know anything/have you heard anything about that?

It's not uncommon for smells to show up in your sweat or urine, especially if it is something strong smelling or foreign to your diet.  I have been a tea drinker most of my life, but on the rare occasion that I drink coffee I can smell it in my urine a few hours later.  And, as HeathyinOhio mentioned, garlic smell can turn up in your sweat.  I suspect that if you ate the same amount every day, then you would stop noticing it (though I'm sure that from time to time others would!)  I've heard people saying that some people smell more like fish because of their mostly seafood diet.  Some of it is just a matter getting used to it.  Once it's not foreign, you don't notice the smell.  But, it could be that she really just does need to drink more water!  If you're dehydrated, everything in your system will be more concentrated.

Actually, the article says it "might" make medications less effective, but I didn't see any documented evidence to support it and I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere else.  I tried linking to the documents cited in the Wikipedia article, but one had nothing to do with interactions with pills and the other one was inaccessible without a login to the Stafford University website, so that didn't help.

The only place birth control was mentioned in reference to kombucha in other articles, was that kombucha could help restore the proper balance of bacteria in your system destroyed my the use of birth control pills.

This is a definite possibility.  Kombucha is a liver detoxifier and many medications are metabolized in the liver, so if you clean out the liver while trying to make use of a medication, the med may get pushed through(cleaned out) before your body can utilize it in any way.  Forevergirl has shared with me that it was discovered in Russia that people who drank Kombucha regularly got less drunk when drinking Vodka than their neighbors who drank only the Vodka.

This is the response I got from CajunErnie:

sounds like Wikepedia got it backwards.  Kombucha (and other supplements) sometimes enhances the effectiveness of medications so the government requires a notice that your health provider be informed of any supplements you are taking so dosage can be adjusted if needed.  Wouldn’t it be great if Kombucha made the birth control pills 100% effective so there wouldn’t be any “accidents”?

Okay, you lovely kombucha drinkers:
What would you do if you were annoyed by a slight buzz when you drank your kombucha?   Roll Eyes   I wasn't falling over, but it was just *too* reminiscent of a wine cooler I guess.   Shocked  The only one staggering around was my dh as he made fun of me  Grin

Here's an explanation my friend sent me from her kombucha loop...
(after I'd thrown out my scoby...)  I haven't checked my bp lately, but in the days of prenatal office calls I was usually in the normal/low zone, so this might be my issue.

 Huh
Any opinions/advice??  (ie, Quit reading kombucha threads and be content to give it up?)

Thanks,
Melanie

A very active yeasty KT ferment, in the early stage >4 days, the alcohol
content would unlikely go over 3%, settling at less than 1/2 of 1% over the
typical 9 day ferment. Typically fresh squeezed OJ has ~1/2 of 1% alcohol.

Many people even those with high alcohol tolerance have told me they seem to
get a buzz from KT. The buzz associated with KT seems more of a
light-headiness to the point of dizziness and having to sit down. High
vitamin B gives a pleasant burst of energy, quite the opposite effect. At
any rate the vitamins and minerals content - though quite numerous, is on
the low side and insufficient to effect anything. It is generally believed
to the acids that fuel the benefits of KT.

IMO, the buzz is from KT moving the blood while lowering the blood pressure.
This fits into the traditional Chinese medicine view (my area of expertise)
not into the western mode. If you're one with low blood pressure, or
borderline KT may affect you more. Seems to work nicely for those with high
blood pressure. This is of course, a generalization as with TCM there are
difficult causes of LBP as well as different causes of HBP and have to be
considered in a different scheme.
