Florescent lights causing eye strain and nausea?
« on: September 30, 2009, 09:41:40 AM » by wlwest
Has anyone else ever had this problem?  I've been noticing more and more lately that I have to wear my glasses, which normally only need them for reading.  Now it seems I'm wearing them more and more thruout the day, not to see better, but eye strain.

And I'm wondering, whenever I go in our basement, which has a drop ceiling with florescent lighting, I always get sick to my stomach and my head hurts.  And I feel better after coming upstairs for a little bit.

Is that an eye thing, or maybe neurological??  Seems kind of weird, but I would like to be able to go down stairs more, that's where all the kids toys are.   Wink

Hi Wendy,

Flourescent lighting and computer screens flicker.  If they are operating correctly, then you won't notice it at all.  But if they are flickering slowly enough for your eyes/brain to pick up on it, then it can be a problem.  I have the same deal in our basement, and if a bulb is going, it starts to give me a headache and I can see if flickering sometimes.

It's possible that your computer screen is causing you issues as well if you have a crt monitor.  There may be a degaussing option that helps, as does resetting the screen resolution to a higher quality.

P.S. I learned all this by asking my hubby to fix things that were bothering me. Cheesy

Wendy,
I have moderate to severe reactions to fluorescent lighting.  I avoid spending much time in it and we have not had any in our house for many, many years.

Here are a couple of articles about it;

Yes, yes, yes!

My grandma and I both get "funny" feeling in some stores with fluorescent lights.  She thinks some stores use cheaper bulbs than others???  I can only handle about half an hour in a Wal-Mart.  And my husband and I were at Lowe's the other day and he said, "These lights are bothering me.  I feel tired..."   Tongue

At least now I know I'm not crazy! Smiley  I think we'll have to just get some lamps down there, that's probably the easiest thing for now.  No wonder I got headaches in school so much!

I often get headaches when I'm in certain stores with florescent lighting. And, with certain computer screens, I need to limit my time, or I get sickish.

Me and my mom are just the same. I know I have been a lot of time at the computer when my eyes start to feel tired. I've been dealiing with this from years. We both get migraine if we see a very bright light or like when the sky is cloudy, like today...

But, what do you guys recomend us to do, to the people who deal with this??? I wear glasses, but I know I have to use sunglasses. Should I use the kind that gets darker with light???

My sister and I always noticed that when we were under florescent lighting for a while (such as in a department store), we'd feel light-headed, less able to "focus" visually, and even nauseous --like you described. We both always felt better if we were able to go outside or at least look out a window or sky light for natural light.

Later, after college, I worked in a public school as a teacher for a while. After the kids were gone at the end of the day, I'd always turn off the lights and use sunlight from the windows and a small desk lamp to grade papers and do my other work. My eyes would feel terribly strained otherwise.

A friend also told me about a B12 spray (http://shop.sunrider.com/Shop/Product_51.asp?group_id=2&dept_id=11&pf_id=34&Return=/shop/display_dept.asp?group_id=2&dept_id=11&Cols=0) that is marketed as countering these feelings. So, now I usually carry a bottle in my purse if I have to be under florescent lighting for any length of time.

My first recommendation is just to avoid long periods of the lights -get outside or even turn off lights (such as in an office) and use desk lamps.  If these aren't an option, the spray works pretty well, too. I'm a stay-at-home mom now, so I'm thankful to be out of the florescent lights unless I choose to go on a long shopping trip. Then, with the spray, I'm usually fine.
