  mammogram..yes or no??
« on: November 11, 2006, 09:40:47 PM » by queentea
I am going to turn 40 next year...the magical year of the mammogram.  I was wondering if there are some of you ladies out there could share your experiences...not that I don't know how bad they can hurt, but I am not certain I even want to do one.  When I mention that to family, they think I am crazy, and that I MUST have it done. I have no family history of breast cancer and I have very sensitive breasts as it is, and I know that it will hurt me a lot! Cry  So are their any of you who have opted out of the experience, or am I just being ignorant and should I just do it?

I think mercola might have some good info on that.  When Doug Kaufmanns show used to be a different format he had a lady on quite often.  Her name was Leilani(sp) and I believe her website was www.blisscream.com  she used to talk about thermal imaging alot.  I have heard that mammograms not only don't help but that they can actually cause more problems.  Now, that is just what i have heard and I can't really say I know anything about thermal imaging, just something to look into. HTH

I just went to her site and it had detailed info. on the thermal imaging.  Says you can make an appt but I'm not sure how you would do that unless you are where she is.  Looks like it was 175.00

Sometimes they use ultrasound instead. Maybe you could ask your doctor about that? My friend, who is 38 found something in hers and she had no history in the family. Not to scare you, but to remind that some are just personal health factors. My mom is 56 and has never had one. She just believes she breastfed 7 children for 2-3 years a piece and was left with empty skin, so if there was ever a lump she would know it because it would be something to put in her bra. lol Roll Eyes I'll probably be the same way. We have it on both sides of my family, so I'll be extra alert about any changes. I'll probably get one just for piece of mind when the time comes. I think the increase in breast cancer is caused from the BC pill and fewer woman breastfeeding or breastfeeding for very short periods of time. Both woman in my family who had it did not breastfeed and one took BC and then HRT.

When I was 22 or so, I found a lump and was scheduled for a mammogram.  The appointment was set for the radiology department by my MD, but when I got there they did some quick phone calls & changed me to an unltrasound exam.  There was no compression or anything painful to me in that experience.  So - as of 13 yrs ago, the two tests were interchangable in some cases.

I discovered a lump about a year ago, and the doctor (a breast surgeon) did an ultrasound.  He said that ultrasounds are best for younger women, because their breast tissue is denser, and mammograms are best for older women as the dense tissue is replaced by fat.  Not sure how "younger/older" is defined, but I am 27.  So the two methods may not be entirely interchangeable, but I would definitely request an ultrasound before a mammogram, if that was an option.

I have never had a mammogram. For me, I would lean towards an ultrasound or other type of scan if I were to be checked. I would never advise someone against a mammogram, but I will share my thinking on the subject.

From what I understand, a cancerous tumor is the body's way of putting the bad cells all in one place, in a sack. The good news about having a tumor is that your body's defense mechanisms are on alert. Pressing and mashing on this sack could cause it to rupture and release the cancerous cells, causing them to spread.

Again, I have no way of backing this up. I heard this at a conference. It made sense to me. I've also made dietary and lifestyle changes to support my immune system and maintain my health so that I can avoid cancer if at all possible.

The bottom line is to use the helps God sends your way and pray for wisdom to know that help when it arrives.

It's been a while since you ladies discussed this, but I am wondering what you all think about mammograms, too.  My doctor scheduled one today at my annual well-woman visit (I'm at the magical age).  I'm not sure that radiation (or whatever they use) is safe.  Any thoughts?

There's a section on mammograms on page three of this newsletter.

And here's another option:

This is one person's take on it. I don't agree with him on everything he teaches, but in this regard, he makes sense.

I have had both: mammograms and ultrsounds....
I have a dear friend (much older than I) who had no family history of breast cancer, no lumps found...she went for a routine mammogram and they unfortunately found cancer...for her, the mammogram was a life saver! She went on to have a masectomy and chemo and is living in perfect health now thanks to that mammogram! Just a thought.
