Reversing Damage Done by Antibiotics: When & How
« on: November 14, 2006, 09:16:50 AM » by smileyface
Ok, I'm just about ready to give up on the do it yourself all natural remedies stuff.  Angry Seems like everytime I try, I end up having to go to the doctor anyway. Last week, I started getting a toothache. I have a wisdom tooth that is pretty bad and needs to be pulled. I was planning on having it pulled after I had the baby, since it never bothered me. Anyway, as soon as it started hurting, I started chewing on garlic and holding it in my mouth. I swished with salt water, and with peroxide. I put cloves in my mouth. I drank echinacea tea, and I tried the water cure for a few days. Well, it just kept getting worse. By Saturday, I gave in and took some Tylenol. It got worse and that night I needed to sleep and the Tylenol wasn't working, so I took some Ibuprophen, which you're not supposed to take when pregnant (I thought it just caused complications during delivery, didn't know it could hurt the baby.  Cry ) The next morning I called my doctor, she wasn't happy about the ibuprophen, told me it would be better to go in and get a prescription for antibiotics and Tylenol #3. So I went in, did all that and came home. The tylenol 3 didn't even touch the pain, it kept getting worse. I have never been in that much pain before in my life!  Cry I think I kinda freaked out my husband (I'm usually quite tolerant to pain, it takes a lot to make me cry), so back to the doctor we went. It was Sunday, so I couldn't get in to see a dentist and just get it pulled. So at the hospital, they couldn't give me any stronger painkillers because of the baby, so they gave me a shot in the mouth to numb it. It numbed the inside of my mouth, but didn't come close to relieving the pain. They couldn't do anything else for me, so they sent me home.  Angry It did start feeling slightly better, I got a couple of hours of sleep. Yesterday morning, I went to the dentist and got it pulled. My jaw still hurts quite a bit, they had to put a ton of lidocane in to numb the tooth, so my jaw is swollen still. But the pain is bearable now, I don't even need the Tylenol anymore.  Smiley Now it's just a dull ache, and I can handle that. Ok, that's my story, I don't know why I typed all that. I guess I just need some sympathy for my horrible weekend, lol.  Roll Eyes

Anyway, all that for one little question.  Wink I'm on antibiotics now. Last week, before the toothache started, I had a yeast infection. It was pretty much gone before this weekend, but since I started the antibiotics it has gotten worse. Is there anything I can do while on antibiotics, or would it be pointless until I'm done with them? Is garlic and all that stuff even going to work right now? Any suggestions would be great.  Smiley

Okay, first take a deep breath. You aren't a failure because you had to have a wisdom tooth removed and required pain medication for the procedure. If success or failure were measured on that scale, there are few that would measure up.

Second, recognize that your ability to cope with frustrations right now are hindered by your physical condition: your mouth hurts, you just had oral surgery, and your body is surging with hormones due to the pregnancy. (BTW I don't know of any herb or natural solution that can make a wisdom tooth that needs removing NOT need to be removed.)

Third, continue to take the antibiotics until you are finished with the prescription. If you don't, the bacteria that the antibiotic is there to kill will regain a foothold and grow back even stronger. While you are taking the antibiotic, look for a good probiotic to take and make it a regular part of your daily routine. Just be sure to take it separately from the antibiotic. The prescription will kill the probiotic if you take them at the same time. Consume yogurt, kefir, kombucha and other fermented foods to encourage the good bacteria to repopulate your system. These, too, should become part of your daily diet.

As far as the yeast is concerned, GOOT is a good application. IMO it will be an encouragement to you to see that you can actually make something in your kitchen that will help your condition. Click here for information on how to make it and its applications. If that's not an option, put the yogurt in there a few times a day and add apple cider vinegar to your bath water.

Finally, a bit of personal advice: look at your to-do list. Look at ALL of the things you have on there. After you've started to get good and tense with the feeling that you'll never get it all done, put that list down and pray. Tell God you're ready for Him to be in charge of the to-do list of your life. Pick up a clean piece of paper and ask Him to tell you what He wants on your to-do list. My guess is that His list will be MUCH different than yours, much shorter, and prioritized differently. Learn to say no to the things that God hasn't placed on your list. You'll rest better and enjoy this pregnancy, this baby and your dear husband much more.

Remember, your job right now is to grow a healthy baby -- and that's enough for any mama. Let us know how you come along.

Thanks SC, that was very encouraging.  Smiley I can't make any goot until thursday or friday (grocery shopping day). I'm all out of olive oil until then. But I do have yogurt. I guess my husband already thinks I'm weird.  Grin The only acidopholus I have are chewable, and I've heard that they don't even make it through your digestive tract, that they have to have a special coating or something.  Huh Oh well, I will take them anyway. Thanks for the advice!  Smiley

Ok, another question. Does anyone know much about comfrey? I was reading about it on bulkherbstore.com, and it seems like it might help with both of my problems. My jaw is still really sore and swollen, and I was thinking that making some comfrey tea and using it as a mouthwash might help my mouth heal. Or maybe I could make some kind of poultice and let it rest where my tooth was pulled. The only thing is, it says this :
"Care should be taken when using Comfrey with very deep wounds as its rapid healing power can lead to tissue forming over the wound before it is healed deeper down, possibly leading to abscesses. Make sure that wounds are thoroughly cleaned and protected from infection."

So maybe it wouldn't be such a good idea for my tooth? They also said comfrey tea could be used for yeast infections. I know you are not supposed to douche while you are pregnant, but maybe if I just used a squeeze bottle and put it on the outside, some might go in.  Huh Ok, I am really uncomfortable getting this personal. lol  Embarrassed Anyway, those were just my ideas, anyone know if they would or wouldn't work? I have comfrey leaves and roots, which one should I use if I do this?
