  What's your favorite music?
« on: November 17, 2006, 11:54:24 AM » by savedbygrace
Hi! I hope this hasn't already been started, I searched for it but didn't come up with anything so I am starting a new topic. We would like to expand our music CD collection and need some suggestions. We love Bluegrass and classical. My husbands cousins have a band that is AWESOME!! They are from Northern Ireland and sing old fashioned Bluegrass sounding (it was the scotch Irish [Ulster Scots] who brought it to the USA)  http://www.lowcountryboys.com/  These guys are so good!! I could listen to it all day long! But I guess we do need more variety!
We would like more bands like these. We also like the Marshalls but haven't found their Cd's anywhere!! They came to our church but we couldn't afford the CD at the time.
Know any more good choices?

Thanks for the thread! I guess I was thinking more along the lines of a great CD. A compilation of music. I guess I should have titled it "whats your favorite CD"?

Well if I were stuck on a deserted island with a CD player and one CD (you know how the scenerio goes...) I'd pick "Stitches of Grace" by Nathan Head.  AWESOME lyrics, and beautiful music.  Oh sure, he's my husband's best man, but he's also a professional musician (who needs to update his website!) and you can hear samples here:

http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/nathanhead

My favorite band is called WaterDeep and everything they write is funky folk and sometimes rockin' but always worshipful.  You can find them here:

waterdeep.com

And I love opera, especially Joan Sutherland.  But I was reared listening to classic rock'n'roll with my hippie parents and wish to GD that I could remember scripture as easily as I can remember the White Album.   Roll Eyes  That in itself if evidence of my sin nature!  I also like bluegrass, especially Gerald Anderson.  He's great!

I really like Josh Grobin when he is singing in Italian.  As long as I don't know the words to his songs, they are really great!!
I also like Andrea Bocelli.
Oh, and Phil Collins, but I probably shouldn't admit that on a Christian website, huh?
I really like 80's music.  I still listen to Keith Green and Rich Mullins who have both passed away.  I also really like oldies like Second Chapter of Acts, Michael Card's oldies, and Michael W Smith's oldies.
Yup, the 80's had ALL the great music.

I like WaterDeep too... Good stuff...

My favorite band is Shane & Shane--they take most of their lyrics straight out of the Psalms. They're out of Texas and they're a bit like WaterDeep--acoustic guitar--really, really good stuff. I've seen them in concert and with their just two voices and just a single guitar they sounded incredible. They're so great in concert and don't charge much and usually play out of churches. They actually just put out a bluegrass hymns sampler album with The Peasall Sisters (which is not there usual style). You can listen to it here. It's pretty good! http://www.rhapsody.com/shaneshane/bluegrasssampler

(Oh... just adding that it was that it was more Enter the Worship Circle (that WaterDeep) that I listened too. I always got the two confused.)

I like A LOT of different kinds of music.. Bluegrass, Sacred Harp Singing, some Rap, some Heavy Metal, old Pop and Rock, Classical, etc.

But for now, I'd like to recommend Appologetix. http://www.apologetix.com/music/music.php They take old, new, pop, country, any kind of songs really, and rewrite them with Christian lyrics. They are not light and fluffy songs either (for the most part - some of them are really funny) they have their theology down solid and it comes across in their songs. They hold a concert in Atlanta every year and are very mission minded. A lot of kids get saved at their concert.

My favorite album of theirs is "New and Used Hits" http://www.apologetix.com/music/album.php?id=11

Floydian, I didn't think anyone here would know who 2nd Chapter is.  I'm so excited!!  Did you know that Matthew just wrote a new book and released an album (from what I understand)?  He battled cancer, and he's now in remission.  My husband grew up with Buck and Annie Herring, and Nellie and Matthew's kids.  They are awesome folks.  They always stay with my in-laws when they come to town.  I always say that I'd like to sit near them in Heaven.  Their Narnia album is my kids' favorite.  I played it constantly when I was pregnant with them.

And Keith Green's lyrics are so amazing.  I love his music, too.  You sound like me.  I have a hard time with Christian music because it tends to be repetitive and me-centered.  "I could sing of Your love forever... forever I'll love You, forever I'll stand, nothing compares to the promise I have..."  But the music with good lyrics (the Michael Cards, the Keith Greens, the Rich Mullinses) is worshipful to me.  I really struggle with "worship" music because a lot of the lyrics tend to be untruthful.  "I can feel the brush of angels' wings, I see GLORY on each face..." What a far cry from "A mighty fortress is our Gd" or "Holy, holy, holy".  If we worship Gd in spirit and in truth, then singing things that are untruthful is not worshipping Him.  I'll bet I'm gonna get a lot of flack for that one...

And we still have a lot of our old music around here, too, so don't feel bad.  Sting, Eric Clapton, Simon & Garfunkel, Elton John... I think that the lyrics to non-Christian music is a testimony to Gd's faithfulness, too.  He tells us that righteous living leads to peace and blessing, and that a life without Him is empty.  Those non-Christians have some empty lyrics, even if the music does sound nice!  It reminds us that there's a whole world out there who needs Jsus because they're empty, too!

Ditto! I don't listen to "Christian" radio stations (they've started dropping "Christian' and now call themselves "Family-friendly radio") much anymore because of that . We buy CD's and listen those.

Oh! and another good album is "Worship and Faith" by Randy Travis. I was just listening to it in the car. I've always loved his voice.

It's got these songs on it (I ususally skip #s 6, 13, 15, & 17 but I like all the old stuff):

1 He's My Rock, My Sword, My Shield
2 Farther Along
3 How Great Thou Art
4 Just a Closer Walk With Thee
5 Shall We Gather at the River?
6 You Are Worthy of My Praise
7 Love Lifted Me / Mac Powell
8 Softly and Tenderly
9 Sweet By and By
10 Blessed Assurance
11 I'll Fly Away
12 Turn Your Radio On
13 Open the Eyes of My Heart
14 In the Garden
15 Above All
16 Will the Circle Be Unbroken?
17 We Fall Down
18 Peace in the Valley
19 The Unclouded Day
20 Room at the Cross for You

I dont really like that much Christian music because it all sounds alike to me. It  sounds like a remake of a remake to me unless its got something differant about it like some twangy sounds or other cultural differances. I wish the Chrisitan words and meaning in those songs could be played with the 80s style music then id really like it, LOL.

I like a variety of songs like the old stuff,80s, cajun zydeco, blue grass and more.
BUT i really like native American music.

There is a Christian native singer named BIll MIller. He sings a lovely song and CD both  called
" hear our prayer"

Yeah, I'd have to agree.  You won't catch any flack from me. Cool

I am gonna have to get the 2nd Chapter's Narnia.  I had forgotten about that one.  I reallly enjoy their hymns one.  I did not know that he had cancer or that he wrote a book or had another album.    Awesome.
I also really like Don Francisco.  I forgot about him earlier.  Also a guy named Andrew Peterson who my hubby likes a lot.
Mostly we like the Christian music that was written before Christian music became "cool".

I would have a hard time making do without Rich Mullin's A Liturgy, A Legacy, and a Ragamuffin Band. I've also been listening to some internet live-stream music. It's neat because you can pick a genre, and listen to commercial-free music all the time. I like the salsa, classical guitar/flamenco, old-time jazz/swing, and gospel bluegrass. Like a lot of others, I'm not too crazy about "top-40 worship" music.

I grew up on all those older contemporary Christian artists, too. I remember the day Keith Green died. My mom cried half the day. I liked the 2nd Chapter of Acts also, and I remember going to a Don Fransisco concert in the early 80's. Once CCM hit the late 80's, I ZONED OUT.  Grin Except for Rich Mullins, of course. He was a gem. I wish he was still with us. I'm sure he's glad that he's not.

If you like Shane and Shane, I hope you have listened to Shane Bernards music before they coupled togother.  It's just as awesome.  Rock's Won't Cry is his first CD he released.  I was introduced to his music in 99 right after he put out of the album.  I'm so glad it was recommended - they are awesome worshippers. (and yes from Texas - Aggies at that)  I also like the Gaither's new album Give It All Away.  The "new" Gaither band is really great - but when they do Holy is the Lamb and you see Guy Penrod fall to his knees - AH - to see a man worship like that and know his love for the Lord is amazing.

A harpsichord was the precursor of the modern piano. While it did have keys, the strings inside were plucked instead of struck, giving it a wonderfully rich, resonating sound that to me is simply sublime. If you have listened to anything by Bach, you have probably heard the harpsichord; it sounds like a stringed instrument, but has the rhythm of a keyboard instrument.

I don't buy any CD's because the radio is free!! LOL!   Smiley
But my all time favorite is the one my daughter made for me.  Nothing is sweeter than your own kid's voices.  Besides, we are so busy singing ourselves that we hardly have time for anything else.

But we love all kinds of classical music.  Did you know that there are certain vibrations that classical music gives, such as Beethoven, that mimics  the vibrations of the stars which makes your plants grow quicker?  Cool huh?!

The only couple of Christian contemporary CD's that I care for are Keith Green's: Song's for the Shepard.  Sandi Patti's:  Was it a morning Like this and we also like Rebekah's : To the Ends of the Earth(which needs a sequel, by the way)  Wink

We like the sound of bagpipes and I like that Mannheim Steamroller thing.

Definitely my fav. is Dallas Holm, esp. the older ones. (dallasholm.org) My dh just took me to hear him. It was awesome! He sang an awsome song that needs recorded, "I'll be a fool for You, Jesus". I love some classical, and hate others! IMO, the best is Pachelbel's Canon! Our whole family loves Buddy Davis. (You can buy his at answersingenesis.org). My fav. is "One Blood". Practical, powerful messages!
