My dh just made me a CD with a bunch of love songs on it.   Cry Smiley

It's got Lady (Kenny Rogers) which always makes me cry.  The song from Robinhood  Everything I Do.  The song from the Karate Kid (I'm embarrassed to say I don't know the name of it).  The theme from the 1st Zoro with Katherine Zeta Jones.  And a couple of others.

Does this date me or what ??

nah.  I grew up listening to oldies b/c that is what my parents would allow.  So when all my friends were listening to Michael Jackson I was listening to the stuff my parents grew up with.  I still like it.  And I'm not sorry I missed MJ   Grin

LOL!  I was only allowed to listen to Christian radio and the classical station (and country when I was older and of course old blue grass & hymns) growing up. So I grew up on Keith Green, 2nd Chapter of Acts, Michael Card, Don Francisco......

Anyway, I couldnt just name one CD..and usually I am the type who likes a couple of songs off the CD, but not the whole CD so that helps to eliminate, but I will try to keep the list short. Wink

WOW Yellow Worship
Michael Card: Stargazer (love the Irish melodies on that)
Renewing the Heart: For Such a Time as This
Serene & Pearl - Peace All Over Me
Keith Green - The Ministry Years

It's so fun to hear that other people loved all the same music I did.  Keith Green: Songs of the Shepherd.  Love, love, love.  2nd Chapter of Acts.  We have a local christian station thats been around for over 30 yrs.  It is truly Christian, not feel good, family friendly.  It is praising Christ friendly. So we are very blessed.  Been listening to that all my life because that is what was played at our house growing up.  No TV.  Also my dad loved Bach and we had everything,  Hooked on Bach, BachBusters.  These were all synthesized Bach.  My Friends just loved it.
Now I have teenagers so we listen to Pillar, Kutless, of course we listen to Newsboys, Third Day, Casting Crowns, Jeremy Camp and many others. I have to say that I really like alot of this music but my kids don't appreciate the awesome spirit moving music of Keith Green.   Undecided

Music....ahhh, we love music around here!!!

I spent alot of time with my grandparents and they were Hee Haw watching country people, so grew up on old country, Loretta Lynn, Charlie Pride, Dolly, Hank Williams, then at home with parents I would get my dose of classic rock - The Steve Miller Band, The Eagles, Kansas, Deep Purple - Credence Clear Water, Little River Band

then enter my teenage years - Air Supply, Rush, Styx,
I can't believe I'm admitting this, but hubby and I our first date was to a concert at 17 yrs old, Billy Squier and RaTT --

Anyway, that was my past and upon getting to know hubby and family, I was introduced to Michael Card, Don Francisco - hubby sang one of his songs "I Could Never Promise You" to me at our wedding  Grin

We still love Michael Card and have about all his stuff, some Michael W. Smith, Keith Green, ANDREW Peterson (love his music), WOW worship CD's, Third Day, Casting Crowns.....and then we also like bluegrass, some country, like Kathy Mattea, Randy Travis, Allison Krauss

right now in my CD player in my van I have a mix made by Andrew Peterson, an old bluegrass CD mixed by my son in love and another one mixed by him that has the songs played at his and my daughters wedding.

We have piano, guitar, drum and mandolin players in the house - so is fun, especially to see the interest of the kids.

I LOVE choir music.  I grew up on Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir.  I don't really like Rich Mullins, Keith Green, etc...too bland.  Larnelle Harris (especially his duets with Sandi Patti) is one of my all time favorites.  I love old hymns sung with power and authority...like the Gaither Vocal Band.  My husband and I have been to several of their Homecoming concerts.  The moving of the Holy Ghost is almost tangible.  Being raised in the UPC (which has some of the best musicians, IMO), I have always been surrounded by music.

My dh really likes Third Day and Mercy Me.  I usually like Selah and I really like Salvador!  Theit latino stuff really gets me movin!  My kids like the songs on Rebecca's "To the ends..."  especially the non-English ones.

We are not discriminate about kind of music so much as we are what the music says or what we read into the music.  There are some songs that are sung at our church that my husband has a hard time with because of what he hears it is saying to him  (certain phrases meaning something different to him) but not all of those songs speak to me the same way.  He also doesn't like if we are singing as a congregation and saying "I', "me" "my" all the time, he would like it to be "we" "our" etc.  I supposed that if thirty people all said "I" at the same time it would be the same as a "we" but I can see what he's saying too.

That's us...

That's funny.  My parents were older and I grew up listening to big band.  It's still some of my favorite music today.  My parents weren't against rock, they just hated it.  I rebelled some and liked MJ back when he was a black male.
Oh Air Supply--hadn't thought of them in awhile.

Wow, this thread brings back high school memories.

I've been listening to a CD from Iona called "Heaven's Bright Sun" that you should all get.  It is absolutely amazing music.  Celtic/jazz/fusion/progressive....somewhere in between.

DEMON HUNTER.....       We love christian metal!!!!  My husband was a metal head and I was a punk rocker.  I was furious when my husband broke all of our punk and metal cd's and tapes.  But then we became christian and he introduced me to christian metal and christian punk.  We have never gone back to the garbage that we use to listen to.

Actually, I've mellowed on that alot too.  I listen to more musical, uh, music.  Metal is cool for doing housework (motivation), but I like stuff that sounds more like Dave Matthews Band now.  Stavesacre was cool for a while too...

You know what's wierd?  I'm a drummer and I don't really even listen to anything anymore.  I have prefered absolute silence for about 3 years now, except for the occasional Iona indulgence.  And now I'm separated by 3,000 miles from my kit!!  So I don't even do that anymore and that's been almost a year.

But what  time with God it has been!!  Lot's more time to delve into Art Katz, Adam Clarke and Gerhard von Rad.

It's wierd being a musician and doing nothing with it and knowing that you're right where you're supposed to be and not even seeking an end to the season.  I used to be restless over it, but now I just shrug my shoulders and go, "eh....whatever".

That's enough blah blah for now,

Hi! I hope this hasn't already been started, I searched for it but didn't come up with anything so I am starting a new topic. We would like to expand our music CD collection and need some suggestions. We love Bluegrass and classical. My husbands cousins have a band that is AWESOME!! They are from Northern Ireland and sing old fashioned Bluegrass sounding (it was the scotch Irish [Ulster Scots] who brought it to the USA)  http://www.lowcountryboys.com/  These guys are so good!! I could listen to it all day long! But I guess we do need more variety!
We would like more bands like these. We also like the Marshalls but haven't found their Cd's anywhere!! They came to our church but we couldn't afford the CD at the time.
Know any more good choices?

We were in Gatlinburg Tennessee (we officially want to move to Tennessee now, fell in LOVE with it, the eastern part anyway) and there was a bluegrass band playing, which sorry but I do not like country music, but this stuff was good.  Not twangy, but good.  Well, bluegrass!  So we bought a $5 CD b/c we were driving halfway across the country, and listening to bluegrass in TN just makes sense.  So, we pop the CD in and I think every song was about a wife or husband leaving!!!  We were so disappointed b/c the songs they were singing live weren't that way.  Are all bluegrass songs this depressing?   Undecided  We trashed the CD.  I love the music, so unless they are singing about something innocent like the "hills of Tennessee.....keep coming back to me....." (I made that up - aren't you impressed?) maybe I could find just an instrumental bluegrass CD?  Do you know if that's possible?

I would have a hard time making do without Rich Mullin's A Liturgy, A Legacy, and a Ragamuffin Band. I've also been listening to some internet live-stream music. It's neat because you can pick a genre, and listen to commercial-free music all the time. I like the salsa, classical guitar/flamenco, old-time jazz/swing, and gospel bluegrass. Like a lot of others, I'm not too crazy about "top-40 worship" music.

I grew up on all those older contemporary Christian artists, too. I remember the day Keith Green died. My mom cried half the day. I liked the 2nd Chapter of Acts also, and I remember going to a Don Fransisco concert in the early 80's. Once CCM hit the late 80's, I ZONED OUT.  Grin Except for Rich Mullins, of course. He was a gem. I wish he was still with us. I'm sure he's glad that he's not.

Amen on Rich Mullins being a gem.  He's about all the Christian music I listen to.  That and hymns.  I like that it's scripturally solid which I have found some Christian music is not.  But I'm not on the up and up as far as current Christian bands, so I have no idea what's out there.  I'm content with just the few CDs I have  Smiley.  We also listen to Celtic music, Scottish music, and lots of classical.  I like very old jazz as well, like Louis Armstrong and Scott Joplin and the like.  I got rid of my Ella and Billie tapes - couldn't sing to those words anymore Grin.  So we mainly stick to instrumental jazz.  The kids love this tape I have of Stanley Clark (bass).  On a couple songs, Gregory Hines is tap dancing to the music.  It is so cool.  We like neat stuff like that.  Plus, Daddy plays bass.  Wink

Country twangy, hmmm I kinda think anything with a mandolin is twangy! But it is defiantly not like country music. To me country music and bluegrass music is completely different! I think of Travis Tritt or ummmmm oh man, its been a long time since I listened to Country music! I really don't like it. You are right, it is DEPRESSING!! their music is not depressing in any way shape or form! My kids dance around and sing with it! Its the cutest thing! Anyway I found a link where you can listen to their music. I think it takes Quik time.

Thanks savedbygrace - I will check them out!  Yeah, I suppose you are right - bluegrass has twang too.  Hard to explain I suppose but kinda like you said, as long as it doesn't sound anything like "country music" like the stuff on the radio, then that could be what I am looking for!   Grin

My favs Shane & Shane made a bluegrass sampler with the Peasall sisters. It's SO SO good!! http://www.rhapsody.com/shaneshane/bluegrasssampler It has just three songs though. Sad Victory in Jesus, Blessed Assurance, & Worship the King. I think you can listen to it online. I think the Peasall sisters are probably great all by themselves too and they're blue grass. They have an incredible three part harmony. Shane & Shane are great and are mix of all types of music--I like their older more acoustic stuff the most.

Oh! and another good album is "Worship and Faith" by Randy Travis. I was just listening to it in the car. I've always loved his voice.

Oh, we have this CD, too. I like the hymns that he has done a whole lot. But Fernando Ortega,  Kathy Troccoli, and Michael Card would have be my all-time favorite artists.
If you like hymns, Fernando Ortega has some beautiful ones. Arranged with enough, for lack of a better word, flair to be a little different but still recognizable and "worship-ful", particularly his latest CD, The Shadow of Your Wings: Hymns and Sacred Songs. And many of the songs that he has written are based straight from Scripture. I love reading Psalms and coming across a verse that he has used in his lyrics- hey, I know that one! It makes the passages even more meaningful.

Okay, I was told by my cousin I should be posting in here, so here I go.

I listen to a wide variety, and I don't think I could pick one favorite if I tried! Cheesy Jeremy Camp, Jeremy Riddle (no, I don't only listen to "Jeremys"  Wink), Chris Tomlin, Casting Crowns, Mercyme, various WOW cds, Third Day, 33Miles, should I keep going?  Wink I work in a Christian Book store, so I get to hear a wide variety of music plus get familiar with new artists etc. I guess you could say my listening style usually leans to the contemporary side, but I do like hymns too! I also like when they play hymns and make them a bit "contemporary."
I am definately one of those people who anytime they are in the car, there is music playing! Cheesy

We knew Chris Tomlin before he was "famous".  Still can't believe that's him - I saw a CD once.  He was REALLY skinny when I was eating across from him at our tiny church before a jam session with my brother in law.  Nothing like what he looks like now!  I was newly married and you know he NEVER looked me in the eye during the entire meal even though he was right across from me at a small table.  I remember that well.  He was single then.  Nice upright man I would say!  Sheesh, that was like 10 years ago!

Does anybody listen to country gospel?  I usually DON'T, but I was driving home from a road trip Sunday morning and apparently that was my only option on the radio, driving thru very rural Texas on a Sunday morning, & heard this song but never was able to find out who it was.  I was thinking that a CD would be a good gift for my dad for father's day...just wondering if anybody might be able to help me trace the lyrics to a particular artist!
